UJJWALA YOJANA
The Pradhan Mantri ujjwala yojana is an ambitious social welfare scheme to aid impoverished section of Indian society. With a tagline of ‘Swachh irdhan behtar Jeevan’ Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala yojana was launched by PM Narendra modi on May 1 2016 in Uttar pradesh’s ballia district for providing free LPG connections to women from BPL households.
Under this scheme Rs 8000 crore has been earmarked for providing 5 crore LPG connections to women beneficiaries from BPL households over next three years. The scheme provides a financial support of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection. The beneficiaries will be identified using the socio-economic and caste census data.
The main purpose of this scheme is to replace the unhealthy, unclean cooking source like wood, coal, cow dung cakes that are mostly used in Rural Area with the new LPG connection. Reduction in use of solid fuels will lower the air pollution and reduce health hazards among children, also the proper implementation of the scheme will increase the energy security of people and reduce incessant cutting of trees for fossil fuels.
But, prolonged and inadequate processes of selection of beneficiaries, lack of awareness in people about the benefits of using LPG, costly refilling and maintenance and malpractices such as selling of LPG cylinders in black market are the major hurdles in the proper implementation of the scheme.
In spite of the challenges ‘Ujjwala Yojna ’ is a visionary initiative by the government which will help the impoverished sections of society by empowering them with proper energy source to live a healthier life.
