thanks Itsdishain. i gotta do loadsa reading frm wat u tell me. CA is fine. World history with all the dates, events and places... whoa! theres plenty of work ahead. i better wake up! Thanks again.

does that mean i gotta read my 10th history once again?

hey guys..........

Its nice to know that people r really gearing up for CAT, XAT etc. It reminds me of my dooms day prep. at this time.

At this time the real thing to worry about to keep the cool in the exam. People usually forget the real basics of writing a competitive exam like XAT etc.

The most basic thing to know n apply in a competitive exam is

1> set the time limit to the sections n stick to it. It is applicable for exams other than XAT...

2> Know ur strength n strategise accordingly.

3> Do not spend too much time in a single question even though it may be the simplest question on earth.........

4> Get a digital watch if possible to keep track of exact time.

5> Try to imagine the cut offs for each section by going thru individual sections in the beginning... this will give u a fair idea about the way u should go about attempts.

6> If the paper is tough then its tough for all, so why to worry????

7> Be in the exam hall before 30 mins to avoid any traffic snarls........n anxious moments.

8> Do not look at others while writing the exam as it gets u outta conc. mode which results in loss in time.

9> Before the exam day just relax n chill out.......do not study as it would not add substantial amount of knowledge in a single day

10> Always say urself that "u can make it" and "n seat in this X institute is mine this time"

I hope too much funda has been given by me.

Now its implementation time dudes!!!!!!!!!!

All The Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😁

more inquiries then shoot.....

hey Xavyen!! 😉 thank u... i especially like 'the dont look at others during the xam' advice... dis sim cat my friend kept lookin at how many qns the guy in front of him was attempting in maths!! he completely screwed up his own paper...
one karma pt for u 😉

thanx for the compliment Geetu... It is the simple most basic things people usually forget as the dooms day gets nearer...

xavyen

"dont spend 2 much time on a single ques though it mite seem easy" wow dude u hit d nail... this is something i hv learnt after 10 mocks! logic is very obvious but it took me so long to apply it! ur post was gr8.

thx buddy.

Hi Satyen,

ur mail is really helpful..........but still I hv a query.Other than XAT score what is imp.....see i m from fashion background and had been an average student thruout my acads. so wanted to know that what role acads play.Last year I gave CAT but didn't gave XAT as I was under impression that it is very tough(more tham CAT) , but this year I am giving XAT so wanted to know abt it. for G.K. i will go thru the books like CS , business magazines but tell me one thing that other than G.K which section has more weightage(VA,quant). how abt quant .Is it similar to that of CAT or difficult than that.

I know I m asking so many questions at one go............hope to see ur reply soon.

pooja

hi Pooja,

To be frank with you the acads do count. But the weightage is not that much great, may be 10%. About the back ground its ok as there is always a rich mix of people from various backgrounds who r given admission.

The best way to counter the weakness in acads is by scoring high in the written test. To give u a clear picture about the XAT test, let me give u some facts.

XAT has always followed the pattern of

80 VA+RC
60 quant
60 GK

u can always go thru the previous years question papers to get a feel of the exam.

About ur question about the quant section, I will say it is totally unpredictable. but again if u see the previous question papers u can narrow down the topics to few such as permutation/combinations, series, some weird codings(do not worry about it) etc.

Always see the previous question papers as last time it repeated as much as 51 questions from previous year papers.

I know quant is nemesis for most of the students. Let me give u the nature of this paper. unlike CAT, it focuses more on function and logic based questions. If u can get the TIME XAT questions then u can fairly make out what is the requirements....

To remind u there is individual cut offs and time limits for each sections. once u move from one section to another , u cannot go back. But, many people who have cleared the paper assumes this rule as not sacrosanct :-)

I hope the above info will help u. Any more doubt shoot!!!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot for a prompt reply.U hv cleared most of my confusion.Tell me satyen if I can get XAT paper of last 2-3 yrs.............one thing more is whatever I m doing for CAT preparation is sufficient or I need to do something else than that for XAT I mean some other book or any other material.

How is the pattern for VA/RC?Is it more vocab based or all the topics are important?

Actually if I will get any paper than I will be able to make out the paper pattern.

Well anyways thanks again.Hope to see your reply soon.(again).

pooja

ok....... to let u know about the previous year papers let me give u a link to download previous xat papers.

I am not sure how many papers in there just check it out otherwise collect it from any of ur friend who is taking coaching in TIME, CL etc.

http://www.boredguru.com/modules/downloads/viewcat.php?cid=5&min;=10&orderby;=titleA&show;=10

for the extra mtrl for prep. its better if u get some quant specific mtrl for XAT from TIME or IMS or CL etc. I know about TIME giving mtrl for XAT.

About the diff between CAT prep. n XAT prep., the major diff u will find in english. Here u have to focus on the verbal part. just go thru the previous paper the pattern is constant n repeating.

20 synonym
20 antonym
10 fill in the blanks(most prob. sentence comp.)
30 RC

quant (6 sets, each set 10 interrelated questions)

I hope it will give a fair idea about the XAT pattern.

cya later if u have got more questions.

hi xavyen,

is it true that LR is a LOT tougher in XAt?

thanx for helpin us out , guyz...
but u haven't told us abt the cutoffs reqd for ximb. plz do clarify tht point.
and , i heard ximb has great facilities, esp it facilities. cud u elaborate on tht?

Thanks Satyen,I hv got the XAT paper.........will take out the print out and give it tomorrow as a mock paper.I am a student of TIME but I hv not got any paper or quant material for XAT.Everything is common.Ya there will a XAT mock paper after we take CAT.

Tell me satyen how did you prepared for XAT.Did u gave CAT or applied to any other institute?

pooja

ok.......

let me clarify all ur concerns.:-)

The LR is usually tougher than CAT n thats true as I have gone thru the last few years papers while I was preparing.

About the cut offs.... not sure how much was the cut off for each paper. I estimated the paper to have cut offs as

VA 32-33
QA 18-19
GA 8-9

But to clarify its my estimation or assumption, no offical cut offs as per the institute.

About the facilities u can go thru the brochure the institute will provide when u apply. It has got great infrastructure in terms of class rooms, sports facilities, auditorium, library, hostels etc.

Each student individual room with LAN n internet facilities 24x7 etc.

About my prep. for XAT....... To be frank enough I never prepared too much for XAT. After the CAT, I just identified areas to improve. That is VA, specific QA topics n the GA.

After that I went on to complete the Baron's, Norman Lewis, Richard Nurnberg in 10 days for the VA.

Then for quant went thru the previous question papers n TIME mtrl.

GA no great prep............

About the institutes I applied n got calls r

SCMHRD, SIBM, TAPMI, NMIMS, MICA.....

I converted SCMHRD, NMIMS but did not went for the interviews for the rest.

I hope the above info will work for u guys.

any more queries shoot..........

Xavyen

Satyen I got one paper of XAT from the link you gave but tell me from where can I get more paper.

I hv done Norman Lewis but Barrons has a big word list...how to do that? Though I do 5 - 10 words on regular basis(from anywhere). Synonyms and antonyms are also there in the paper? These are given in CL and Time material so I think that is sufficient. Isn't it?

I asked you what topics generally come in quant section?I mean is there some regular pattern that they give more stress on Algebra,Mensuration,Geometry or Arithmetic?

pooja

yes Pooja, whatever u told is correct. I was just telling about the practice sake. If u r working on the vocabs from a long period then there is no need of working more just a revision will do.

About the quant let me give u my analysis....:)

The stress is more on series questions, coding decoding, permutation combination, functions(iterative)....
for expl. 2yrs before it asked a movement of knight in the chess board in the form of a function.

The key to appear particularly the quant paper is to focus for the cut off, by at first attempting one or two question sets where u feel comfortable. This is only possible if u glance thru all the question sets.

After doing the above u will be in a position to clear the cutoff. :)

Then go for the other sets. The aim is to maximize the score at the same time attempting the questions in right approach.

It is my way of attempting the quant u can devise a strategy of ur own.

As u r TIME student so any how they will focus on the XAT papers once CAT is over. Just try to focus for CAT now. Think of XAT once CAT is over as u have got enough time after that.

I hope it will help u out. If more queries then just shoot!!!!!!!!!

Hiya all,
well CAT and XAT are both quite different.....
here in XAT, Verbal part (Vocab + RC) is relatively easier than CAT(actually one can score 100% here)

the difficult part durin our time (the XAT in Jan 2003) was Quants and GA....

Quants had questions in sets, 1 set had ten questions.
The questions involved more of permutations and combinations and Probability....
The caselets are given and then there r questions based on the caselet.
the catch is if u cannot understand a caselet......u straight away lose 10 questions....
This pattern was followed in 2002 and 2003 XAT.....if one can lay their hands on those two classic XAT papers....it wud be great to practice with....my experience with mock XATs for those years was bad.....they were not upto the mark.....while actual XAT was real different.....

About GA, only 2 things need to be done.....there are monthly mags by Competition Success review.......get ur hands on their past issues - atleast from august onwards....and go thru dem and also they give GA quizzes.....
Secondly atleast read head lines and first para of the economic times......
In GA this will help u in making a conscious pretty accurate guess using elimination method in any paper using GA for evaluation....also if going thru yearbook (Manorama or Competition success) will also help - esp in IIFT exam.....

But be ready for the pattern to change...though logically speakin Jan 2004's pattern should be followed for next XAT also........
cya,
Gaurav

hi guys!

this may sound silly, but could u tell me where can i get the barrons word list?? do u get it as a book or v can download it from internet???

i m in bbsr, please help!

thanks.

oops sorry one more query,

is it true that the cut off for the orissa domicile people is less?? how much difference will it make...m asking coz i fall under this category.

thanks again!

yeah dude. get d GRE Barrons book. It has over 3500 words with meanings and sentence usages. It also has stuff like analogies and sentence correction. My prep for GRE is really helping me in VA.
