Why Finance?

1. Ever since I've stepped in to corporate world I am working on finance this ahich I've shared before. And in three yesrs of tenure in Industry I've been working on the same and I'm enjoy working on it, that is why I said I'm more biased towards finance. In mechanical Industries too there are mechanical engineers who are working on such numbers. And I was doing this sitting in my cabin only from last three years. In my curreny company the strategy planning deptt head is a mechanical engineer which a team of 5-6 CAs assisting him.

2. I just wanted to know something from the one who are experienced in the field that what I'm thinking is practical and acceptable in industry or not.

3. Well everything comes with experience. Most of the time after passing out from school, because of peer pressure you move into something whatever they say. And later you realize that you have born to do well in some other field. And when I got my first job I stepped exactly into the field where I want to. And that is why I stick to it. Also I'd already planned to go for masters after gaining some experience. This decision of mine has helped me to decide where exactly I've land further. If I would have decided to go for masters exactly after my grad, I might have gone for M.tech, because I didnt had idea regarding the opportunities in corporate world.

4. Another reason why I'm planning to go for MBA in finance because my academics says something else while my corporate experience speak something else. And I've gone through the requirement of the profile on many job portals for the work which I'm doing. They usually ask for engineering with MBA (in finance mostly). I'm doing what I want to, but one can never stick to one company throuout the life.

Well First i wud like to say....gud that u took my reply in the right spirit now coming to ur points:
1. U said u have worked in Finance.....well purchasing/costing etc is just a miniscule part of finance based on that experience u might be better off doing an MBA in logistics mgt & not finance...

2. I may not have the relevant experience in this case but peer experiences in this case guide my opinion.

3 & 4. Very rightly said "everything comes with experience" but it is equally true that theres no substitute for hard work & there is no shortcut to success which u r trying to achieve now....& whats the harm in MTech supplement it with a ICWA/CIMA if u feel it is not enough its not that i m being paid to promote these profiles only that i feel they are much more relevant to ur profile...rest is ur choice!!!!!!

I'll never take anything in wrong spirit, because I undersatand that this is not facebook or something where two will talk something casually for fun. We all are here, coz we believe that we'll be gaining something fruitful from the fellow PGs, as they are in one or more way have better knowledge regarding the subject.

Coming to the question and the subsequent replies:
1. I've not done the purchasing, neither I'm a part of finance directly. I am a part of cost planning ( a part of purchase team). We are regularly coordinating with finance and corporate planning deptt of our company pertaing to commercial/financial part of purchase function. Since I'm a part of purchase team in a manufacturing concern, I can distinguish between the purchase function and logistics function in manufacturing concern. A purchase team role is to maintain supplier relation pertaining to development of components, commercial settlements. Formulate budgets for purchase considering inflation and other variable factors which may impact the cost of the product. Logistics management is entirely a different function which is taken care by supply chain department, which in some companies is a part of either purchase or logistics team. Well this is not something what we are supposed to discuss here, but the discussion was going in wrong direction so this was required for explanation.

3&4. Well your sugession for ICWA/CIMA worth consideration. Thanks. And I belive that for a science student studying finance subjects wont be easy.

Which are the companies offering this role.
and do companies go only to top 10 mba colleges or they also hire from top 50 mba colleges for this role.

Yes MBAs are certainly given IB profiles in top b-schools

NCFM certifications are good for forming a sound conceptual base , where as CFA is a really good differentiator for one's profile , would suggest to do more research on about these certifications , on the respective threads 😃

Just came across a very nice article by SA Aiyar , a very good insight in the black money scandal, which is THE topic these days 😃 ,a good read for finance enthus :)

Our black money is here, not in Switzerland : India : SA Aiyar : TOI Blogs

Hi guys,
This seems a nice forum for finance discussions. I would like to know what is the difference in the job profiles of those working in finance functions in Consultancy firms and Banking . Is it possible to shift profile from consultancy to banking or vice versa at a later stage.

For someone looking to get into investment banking, after doing an engineering degree, would be a good idea to do an MS in Finance from a good university in US/UK? or will the value of an MBA degree be more? this, i'm talking about, is in context of investment banking career or other financial profession options like private equity/hedge funds etc.

It should be solely based on your interest and not on your background....
