Why Finance?

he is bank manager

I am currently pursuing engineering 4rth year . Planning on doing my MBA next year in Finance specialization ( wanna become an Investment Banker ) . I wanted to know are there any courses which i could do now so they could improve my resume as I am a fresher.

Hi Puys,

This is my first post of the thread. 😃 I have been following this thread, and have read almost all the posts. Puys, this thread has given me a lot information. Thanks to all the puys who have posted their comments here. Now, coming to Finance as a career. Finance is vast and everyone needs to be very specific where they want to go in Finance sector.

I will give you a brief about myself. I'm an Engineer (ECE) and working with Ericsson (Telecommunication Organization) from past 2.8 years. Totally, I have experience of more than 3.3 years. Somehow, I feel that I'm late in making my decision of moving to Finance sector, but still "Its never too late to start something which you want to be".

What I shall do to move to Corporate Finance.? What are the job profiles in corporate Finance.? I'm not interested in Investment Banking as it sounds damn nice, but I have seen people cribbing about it. I'm at the verge of Joining MBA (Finance) mostly from outside India. Mostly US or Canada. Along with that, I have plans of doing CFA. I have spoken to a friend of mine who is working in KPMG, and she mentioned that scope of CFA is good provided you have an MBA (Finance) degree.

I can see that there are many puys who are working in Finance sector from quite sometime now. I'm asking those guys to help me out here. Btw, all my experience i.e. more than 4 years (by the time I will join an MBA) would be of any use? I mean that whether Finance firms or Organisation would consider this as an experience or not?

Anyone who can give me all the details, I will be thankful to him or her. Looking forward for the comments..

Cheers,
Deep

The CCI (competetion commission of india ) is again in news ,this time for imposing a whopping penalty of 397 crore on the shree cement, before this it had heavily penalised a list of cement companies mostly the top players for "cartelization" offence under the competetion act 2002,know what does this mean for economy as a whole and particularly the cement sector,???? lets ponder over it

Hey Puys
I am in a big fix and need help urgently.

I am a second year student of MBA and hence have to decide upon the specialization.I want to opt for finance as major and IB/HR as minor.

I've been an arts student through and through and now interested in finance. On discussing this with some seniors came to know that most of the financial institutions screen out non-commerce students in the preliminary stage itself. Is it true?Wouldnt then opting for HR be more feasible?

And what would be a better combination
1.finance(major) HR(minor) OR finance(major) IB(minor)

2.HR(major) IB (minor) OR HR(major) finance (minor)

@[604377:sneha256] Yes Sneha.. Companies tend to prefer people with Accounting/Commerce background student over others for Corp Finance roles.. But for rest engineering and arts students are equally preferred. By others I mean jobs in capital markets, Banking jobs where people from diff backgrounds are often seen working..

PM me, in case you have any queries on finance related careers.

Cheers

@[596087:fin-guru] : I have PM you my queries.. I would be glad if you can have a look, and reply.. Thanks once again for the help.. Much appreciated.

@iwantgovtjob iwantgovtjob While evaluating a project, what is required to be assessed is how much value does the project add to the business which is measured by NPV. Higher the NPV more value ading the business is.

While IRR is that discounting rate which makes the present value of inflow equal to the present value of outflow. Conceptually it is the benchmark rate which needs to be compared with the cost of capital. Any project with its cost of capital higher than IRR is to be rejected and vice versa.

And when there are two projects the project with the higher NPV is to be selected or the Project with higher IRR. In case of conflicting results, which may happen due to different timings of the cash flows then the selection should be done on the NPV basis.
