Local authorities are considering an amendment to the litter law that would raise the fine for littering in the community picnic area to $1,000. Since the inception of the litter law, incremental increases in the littering fine have proven to be consistently effective at further reducing the amount of litter in the community picnic area. However, raising the fine to $1,000 would actually have the unintended effect of increasing the amount of litter in the picnic area. Picnic area users would perceive this fine to be unreasonable and unenforceable, and would disregard the litter law altogether. In the argument, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

  • The first is evidence that weakens the main position that the author defends; the second is that position.
  • The first is irrefutable evidence that the author offers in support of a prediction; the second is that prediction.
  • The first is a statement of causation that the author predicts will not hold in the case at hand; the second offers a line of reasoning to support this prediction.
  • The first is a statement of causation that the author predicts will be repeated in the case at hand; the second raises evidence against this prediction.
  • The first is a statement of fact that the author accepts to be true; the second is presented as a consequence of this fact.

Keeping the “Apple Case Study” in mind, what should Foxconn do to increase the management’s accountability?
a. Introduce an election process, nominate candidates for election to worker committees, and also offer information about unions to new hires.
b. Develop the practice of recording more, and also allow regular external audits and checks at all its plants.
c. Pay overtime in 30-minute increments (if a worker works for an extra 30 minutes, he gets paid extra), to compensate for the additional burden.
d. Hire efficient “management representatives” to resolve the issues at the shop level.

Strong and weak arguements:

Should all those who are found guilty of committing homicide or abetting homicide be either given capital punishment or be kept in jail for the entire life ?

Arguments : 1. Yes, such severe punishments only will make people refrain from committing such heinous acts and the society will be more safe.

II. No, those who are repentant for the crime they committed be given a chance to lead a normal life outside the jail.

Give answer (1) if only argument I is strong

Give answer (2) if only argument II is strong

Give answer (3) if either I or II is strong.

Give answer (4) if neither I nor II strong.

Give answer (5) if both I and II are strong.

Tina, a blast furnace expert, who works as a technology trouble-shooter stays in Jamshedpur. She has got an important assignment in Delhi, which requires six hours to complete. The work is so critical that she has to start working the moment she reaches the client's premises. She is considering various options for her onward and return journey between Jamshedpur to Delhi. A quick search revealed that ticket from Jamshedpur to Delhi is available in two trains. Trains 12801 and 12443 depart from Jamshedpur station at 06:45 hrs and 15:55 hrs and reach Delhi next day at 04:50 hrs and 10:35 hrs respectively. Trains 12444 and 12802 start from Delhi at 17:20 hrs and 22:20 hrs and reach Jamshedpur next day at 10:35 hrs and 20:05 hrs respectively. Another option is to reach Ranchi by a three hour road trip and take a flight to Delhi from Ranchi. The distance between Ranchi and Delhi is covered in 105 minutes bothways by any of the scheduled flights. Air India operates two flights, AI 9810 and AI 810, which depart Ranchi at 8:00 hrs and 15:25 hrs respectively. Flight number IT-3348 operated by Kingfisher Airlines departs Ranchi at 19:20 hrs, Return flights operated by Air India, AI 9809 and AI 809, depart Delhi at 5:50 hrs and 11 :00 hrs respectively. Flight number IT-3347 operated by Kingfisher Airlines departs Delhi at 17: 10 hrs.

From Tina's home Jamshedpur railway station is five minutes drive, and her destination at Delhi is 90 minutes and 30 minutes drive from airport and railway station respectively. One has to reach the airport at least one hour before the scheduled departure to complete the boarding procedure. At every railway station she loses five minutes in navigating through the crowd.

Q- If Tina wants to minimise the total time out of Jamshedpur, the best option for her, from the options given below, is:

A. Al 9810 and return by IT 3347.

B. AI 9810 and return by train number 12802.

C. IT 3348 and return by AI 9809.

D. Train number 12443 and return by train number 12444.

E. AI 9810 and return by train number 12444.
