A
gem in India’s Capital

The
College of Engineering & Technology was established in 1961 and was
declared an Institution of National Importance then renamed The Indian
Institute of Technology, Delhi. Its foundation stone was laid by H.R.H. Prince
Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1959. Located in the Hauz Khas area of New Delhi,
visitors can tour the nearby Qutub Minar and Lotus temple.

The
campus is in itself a mini self-sufficient city with its own water supply
system, gardens, residential complexes and shopping centres. There are 13
hostels in all, of which 2 are for female students. Separate apartments are
available for married students. The Student Recreational Area includes the
Student Activity Center (SAC), a football stadium, a cricket ground, basketball
courts, hockey field, tennis courts and a swimming pool. The SAC houses a
gymnasium, areas to play table tennis, squash, pool, a robotics room to name a
few.

Academic Programs at IITM

The
B.Tech degree is awarded in 9 areas, the Dual degree in 5 areas. JEE score is
considered in the admission process for the 851 undergraduate seats. IIT Delhi has
11 multi-disciplinary centers and 3 schools of excellence. The post graduate
programme is extensive and M.Tech, MBA and M.Sc admissions are given based on
GATE/ CAT/ JAM scores respectively. The doctoral degrees and research seats are
also sought after.

IIT
Delhi, like all other Indian Institutes of Technology,
offers a bachelor’s degree in Technology, the Dual Degree Bachelor-cum-Master
of Technology program and an Integrated Master of Technology Program. It also
offers postgraduate and doctoral degrees. IIT Delhi follows the CGPA system of rating with two mid-term exams and an end-term one. There
are also projects and assignments to be regularly submitted. The academic year
generally consists of two semesters but certain departments also hold an
additional summer semester.

Extra-Curricular
Activities

Rendezvous is a four-day-long cultural
event held at the end of October every year. Tryst, the annual science and technology festival at IITD is held
in February-March. Robotics, computing and programming events, designing,
electronics are the core of this festival. NSS IIT Delhi is an initiative
taken up by IIT Delhi students to take part in service of humanity. They
work on blood donation drives, working towards the education of the
under-privileged and on environmental issues. Indradhanu is a Sexuality &
Gender Diversity support group of IIT Delhi. It works on Sensitization &
enlightening students regarding alternate sexual orientation and gender expression.

IITDs future

IITD
is planning to set up two new campuses. These are expected to be set up in
Sonipat and Jhajjar. The Sonipat campus will focus on the Executive MBA
and Faculty Development programs. The campus in Jhajjar will be situated near
the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) campus and will be
collaborating with AIIMS in the fields of Biological Science, Pharmacology and
Chemical Engineering.
The Institute is also planning to launch a Centre for Cyber Security at Delhi
and a Science and Technology park in the Sonipat campus.
