CAT 2017 Expert Analysis: Cut off could hover around 80 percentile

Prediction post CAT 2017 first slot

PaGaLGuY had a quick chat with IMS Learning Resources Chief Mentor Tony Xavier for what it looks like post CAT 2017 first slot.

Section wise Analysis:

Quantitative Aptitude: The quant section was pretty easy, far easier than CAT 2016. Those who were confident with the basics would find this section a cake-walk. I would assume that many aspirants would have solved some 20 questions and those who had prepared well would have attempted beyond 26 too. The reasoning amount in Quant was pretty low and straight out, making it easier for even average students.

DILR: With the three section format, DILR, was again the trickiest this year. The questions were not very calculation heavy and based on Logical Reasoning. Like last year, cut off for this section is expected to be quite low. Anyone with around 15 correct questions in this section might have a pretty good chance of getting it through. Adding to the trouble, this year the aspirants had to scroll the data on their screens both horizontally and vertically, which resulted in spending more time just reading questions.

English: This year’s question in English were tougher compared to last year. Especially the Verbal Ability part was quite dense. The summary questions have also been condensed pretty much in CAT 2017. I don’t think it will be as high scoring as last year. Solving anything around 24-26 questions might put the aspirants in a safe zone.

Overall Difficulty Level:

CAT has more or less settled down if you look at the exam pattern and overall difficulty level in the last three years. The difficulty level for CAT 2017 seems moderate and I would say pretty similar to that of CAT 2015.

Cut-off Marks:

The cut-off marks would remain low this year too, as it was the case last year. Aspirants might have to score up to around 80 percentile for a successful convert.
