Daily Current Affairs – 21st and 22nd September 2015, Monday and Tuesday

1. International Day of Peace observed 

(i) International Day of Peace was observed on September 21st. 

(ii)

The theme ‘Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for
All’, highlighted the importance of all segments of society to work together
for peace. 

(iii)

The UN General Assembly declared celebration of
this day in order to strengthen the ideals of peace, both within and among all
nations and peoples.

2. Alexis Tsipras-led Syriza party emerges as the largest party in Greece

(i)

In the
snap elections held in Greece in September 2015, Alexis Tsipras’ Syriza party won
around 36% of the total votes. The strongest challenger- New Democracy-conceded
defeat with only 28% of votes.

(ii) Tsipras’ strongest challenger, the conservative New Democratic party, conceded defeat with only 28% of total votes.

(iii)

Syriza party has won 145 seats and will form a
coalition government with Independent Greeks who have another 10 seats to add.

 

(iv)

Tsipras called for snap elections in late August
following a series of revolts from Syriza MPs, who formed a new party called Popular
Unity (which won only 3% of votes).

3. Shamim Hanfi awarded with Jnangarima Manad Alankaran 

(i) Renowned Urdu litterateur Shamim Hanfi  was conferred with the Jnangarima Manad Alankaran by Bharatiya Jnanpith on on September 20.

(ii) The award was announced at the annual Kavita Samay – a Hindi and Urdu poetry recitation event organised by the Bharatiya Jnanpith.

(iii) The award recognises writers for their contribution to Indian regional literature. 

4. Indian IT firms provide over 4 lakh jobs in US: NASSCOM report  

(i) The National Association of Software and Services Companies’ (NASSCOM)

report titled ‘Contributions of India’s Tech Industry to the US Economy’ was recently released ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, as part of the ongoing US-India strategic and commercial dialogue in Washington DC.

(ii)

As per the report, Indian IT companies have
provided over 411,000 jobs, both direct and indirect.

Jobs supported by India’s IT sector in the US grew at an annual rate of 10% from 2011 to 2014, or about six times higher than the average  growth rate of jobs, which was 1.7% during that period.

(iii) Besides job creation, the Indian IT Industry has invested over $2 billion during 2011-2013 and paid $22.5 billion in taxes to the US Treasury in those years.

5. Apoorva and C – 421 commissioned by the Indian Coast Guard

(i) On September 21, two

indigenously built Indian Coast Guard Ships – Apoorva and C – 421 – were commissioned at Mumbai’s Naval Dock.

(ii) Apoorva is a 50-metre long Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) and C-421 is a water jet propelled vessel. Both ships are expected to strengthen maritime security. 

(iii) The coast guard officials informed, “Apoorva is equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry, advanced communication and navigational equipments that make her an ideal platform for undertaking multifarious close-coast surveillance, interdiction, search & rescue and medical evacuation missions. The ship will be based in Goa.” 

(iv) C-421 will be based in Androth (Lakshadweep Islands) and is fitted with medium range armaments designed for close coast and shallow water operations. 

6. Ajay Jayaram brings home a silver

(i)

Indian badminton player Ajay Jayaram bagged a
silver medal in the Korea Open in the men’s singles category.

(ii) He lost the gold medal to world No. 1 Cheng Long of China in a 14-21, 12-21 score. 

(iii)

Though Jayaram missed the gold medal, with this
he becomes the first Indian badminton player to win a medal in the Korea Open.

7. Sebastian Vettel wins Singapore Grand Prix of F1 

(i)

German driver Sebastian Vettel won the 2015 Formula
1 Singapore Grand Prix in September.

(ii)

Marina Bay Street Circuit, which is the first
street circuit in Asia, was the venue for the race. This is Vettel’s third
victory this year, the first two being Malaysian Grand Prix and Hungarian Grand
Prix.
