1. Pakistan’s PM Nawaz Sharif calls emergency measures as heat wave toll reached 782
(i) Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called for emergency measures as the death toll from heat wave in southern Sindh province reached 782.
(ii) With the temperatures recorded as high as 45 degrees, the army has been deployed to set up heat stroke centres.
(iii) In addition, there is anger among local residents as power cuts restricted use of air-conditioning units and fans.
2. Sister Nirmala of Missionaries of Charity dies
(i) Sister Nirmala Joshi, who took over the highest post of Missionaries of Charity as the Superior General after the death of Mother Teresa, passed away at Kolkata on Tuesday.
(ii) Sister Nirmala inspired by the work of Mother Teresa had joined in the Missionaries of Charity in 1976 and dedicated herself to this work since then.
3. Blue Mormon declared as Maharashtra’s State butterfly
(i) Maharashtra state Government on Monday declared Blue Mormon as the state butterfly, making it a first state to declare any butterfly as the state butterfly.
(ii) This decision was taken in a meeting with state wildlife board chaired by the State Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar.
(iii) ‘Blue Mormon’ (Papilio polymnestor) is the second largest by size, only behind the southern birdwing butterfly.
4. Kerala state Government declares 22nd June as ‘Snake Bird Day‘
(I) The Kerala State Government on Monday declared June 22nd as the ‘Snake Bird Day’ as a part of a campaign to protect the endangered species.
(ii) Snake Bird scientifically known as Darter – Anhinga melanogaster, is largely found in Alapuzha Kottayam, Idukki, Wayanand and Thiruvananthapuram districts.
(iii) At present, there are over 1500 snake birds in the country in which majority are in Kerala.
5. Rajasthan topped the list of states commissioning grid connected solar power projects in India
(i) The state of Rajasthan has topped the list of states commissioning grid connected solar power projects with an installed capacity of 1147 megawatt.
(ii) This list was released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
(iii) Gujarat, which remained the leader in solar energy generation till 2014, came second with an installed capacity of 1000MW.
6. Indian men’s doubles pair Manu Attri and B summit Reddy in US open finals
(i) Indian men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy reached the finals at the US Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament.
(ii) India’s men’s singles shuttler B Sai Praneeth, however, lost to former World No. 1 and two-time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei of Malaysian in the semifinals.
