1. Health Ministry releases National Health Profile
(i) On September 22, the Union Health Ministry released the National Health Profile, a comprehensive data compiled on the country’s health status, and the resources made available to ensure good health including finance, infrastructure and human resources.
(ii) Prepared by the Central Bureau for Health Intelligence (CBHI), the report reveals that India has only 938,861 registered allopathic doctors or just seven doctors per 1,000 people.
(iii) Further, Maharashtra and Bihar have the worst doctor to patient ratios and one doctor is serving 27,790 and 28,391 patients respectively. Chattisgarh ranked third with doctor patient ratio of 1 is to 25,032.
(iv) The report also revealed the total number of hospital beds in rural and urban areas, number of auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs), total dental surgeons. It stated that the Centre’s share in public expenditure on health has been falling over the last two years.
2. Paytm to launch payments bank by March
(i) Mobile payments firm Paytm has announced the launch of a payments bank by March 2016.
(ii) The company is open for partnership with banks, NBFCs or insurance companies with focus only on product development.
(iii) Paytm’s founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma got the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) approval to set up payments bank along with 9 other entities including Reliance, Vodafone, Airtel, Birla and TechMahindra, among others, in August 2015.
3. Forbes India Rich List- Flipkart founders make their debut at 86th place
(i)With a net worth of $1.3 billion, Flipkart’s founders Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal became the first e-commerce billionaires as they made it to the Forbes India Rich List, which features the country’s 100 richest people.
(ii) Mukesh Ambani was ranked first, followed by Dilip Sanghavi and Azim Premji in the second and third places respectively.
4. Google to launch scholarship program Android Nanodegrees
(i) Google announced the launch of Android Nanodegrees, a program that aims to enhance skills of app developers in India.
(ii)To be launched in
partnership with Udacity and Tata Trusts, the duration of the online course would
range from 6-9 months with a monthly fee of Rs.9800. A total of 1,000 scholarships
would be offered to deserving students by Google and Tata Trusts.
(iii) The tech giant has also declared that if a student successfully completes the
degree, 50% of the tuition fee would be refunded.
5. Telecom service provider Uninor to rebrand itself as Telenor
(i) Uninor, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Norway-based Telewings, will rebrand itself as Telenor, the name by which the parent company operates in 12 countries.
(ii) Telenor entered the Indian market in 2009 and initially operated in a joint venture with real estate investment firm Unitech. However, the latter exited the partnership in 2012.
(iii) Telenor operates in Uttar Pradesh (east), Uttar Pradesh (west), Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
6. Dr Kamal Kishore Goenka awarded with the 24th Vyaas Samman
(i) On September 22, noted Hindi writer Dr Kamal Kishore Goenka was awarded the 24th
Vyaas Samman for the year 2014 for his celebrated work ‘Premchand ki Kahaniyon ka Kaal
Kramanusaar Adhyayan’.
(ii)
Instituted by the KK Birla Foundation, the award
recognises notable contributions in the field of Hindi literature.
7. Leadership award conferred on Indra Nooyi and Shobhana Bhartia
(i) Chairman of PepsiCo Indra Nooyi and Hindustan Times Group chairperson Shobhana Bhartia were presented with the 2015 Global Leadership Award for their commitment as women leaders and for driving a more inclusive economy.
(ii) The annual award was presented by the US India Business Council, which is a top advocacy group for Indian and American companies in the US.
(iii) Natvar Bhavsar famous Indian-American painter known for his abstract and colour field paintings received the Artistic Achievement Award.
8. Odisha girl receives community impact award at Google Science Fair
(i) In September 2015, Indian student Lalita Prasida Sripada Srisai from Odisha won
the Community Impact Award at the fifth annual Google Science Fair, held in
California, United States.
(ii)The 13-year-old developed a low-cost bio-absorbent based water purifier, which
uses waste corn cobs as key ingredient. She will receive Google’s support for a
year for her project and a cash prize of $10000.
(iii) The Grand Prize at the fair was
bagged by Olivia Hallisey from United States.
