1. India signs MoU with France to construct six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur

(i) In a recent development India signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) for the construction of six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur in Maharashtra.

(ii) The pact was signed following the end of high level delegation of Electricite de France (EDF – French public utility) to Mumbai for holding discussions with National Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) on the construction of the nuclear plants.

(iii) The EDF meet was an outcome of the visit of French President Francois Hollande in India in January 2016 during which France and India drew up a cooperation roadmap for concluding techno-commercial negotiations for the Jaitapur project by the end of 2016.

2. March 25th observed as International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

(i) Every year March 25, is observed as the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, this day is marked to remember those people who had suffered and died due to brutal slavery system. This day aims to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice in present times as well.

(ii) The theme for 2016 is,” Remember Slavery: Celebrating the Heritage and Culture of the African Diaspora and its Roots.” This theme is aimed at highlighting the rich African culture and traditions that have impacted life in countries that were involved in slave trade and were the African Diaspora continues to make major contribution in all aspects of life.

(iii) It also highlights the cultural linkages that exist among people of African descent throughout the world.

3. Longitudinal Ageing study in India launched by Ministry of Health & Family

(i) Recently, Ministry of Health & Family launched the Longitudinal Ageing study in India (LASI).The project was launched by B P Sharma, Secretary of Health and Family Welfare.

(ii) As per reports, it will be the largest survey of the elderly – 60,000 elderly over 25 years plan.The Survey is expected to provide scientifically validated data on various issues faced by them.

(iii) In the next few years in India, increasing percentage of the Indian population will be elderly and these survey findings will prove extremely important to develop policy for the same. Speaking of the survey B P Sharma, Secretary Health said, “The study will provide valuable data on their health needs and issues faced by them given the changing social structures, and help us to draw policy tools to address their issues.”

4. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Fortune’s, World’s 50 greatest leaders 

(i) Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently became the only Indian political leader to have been named among the world’s 50 greatest leaders list which was released by Fortune magazine.

(ii) Arvind Kejriwal, who is the chief of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was ranked 42nd on the list.

(iii) The list was topped byAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos, followed by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in second place and Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was placed third.

(iv) Fortune’ third annual ‘World’s 50 Greatest Leaders’ list features the names of men and women around the world who are “transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same.” The list includes those individuals who are doing distinguishing work in the fields of business, government, philanthropy and the arts.

5. Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed set to become J&K’s first woman CM

(i) As per recent development, Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed, is set to become first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

(ii) Mufti, belongs to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and this decision came after a meeting of PDP legislators chaired by Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar in March 2016.

(iii) Since the death of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed the state had been under Governor’s rule. In a statement, PDP leader Naeem Akhtar said that the rest will follow only after consultation with alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

6. Shane Watson retires from International cricket

(i) In a recent announcement, Australian cricketer Shane Watson announced his retirement from international cricket. In 2015, Watson had announced his retirement from Test cricket at the end of the Ashes tour of England.

(ii) With the end of the ongoing World Twenty20, Watson will officially leave international cricket. Watson, is one of the only seven men in history to have achieved the double of 10000 runs and 250 wickets in international cricket across all three formats.

(iii) Others being, Steve Waugh, Carl Hooper, Sanath Jayasuirya, Jacques Kallis, Shahid Afridi and Chris Gayle. He had also been the captain of Australia in all three formats, including the T20.

7. Johan Cruyff, famous soccer player passes away

(i) Famous soccer player from The Netherlands Johan Cruyff passed away recently due to cancer at 68, in Barcelona, Spain.

(ii) Johan Cruyff was avidly remembered for his effort to lead Holland to the finals of the 1974 World Cup and also for being the European footballer of the year on three occasions.

(iii) As per reports, Cruyff won three consecutive European Cups with Ajax from 1971 and coached Barcelona to their first European Cup triumph in 1992 among other achievements.

(iv) Expressing grief on his loss, the Dutch FA said, “Words can hardly be found for this huge loss” It added, Cruyff was the “greatest Dutch footballer of all time and one of the world’s best ever” and wished everyone “a lot of strength in this difficult time”.
