GATE 2017 brochure says can’t change examination city, but Chairman says otherwise
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) 2017 candidates are currently a confused lot. They are unsure if there is still a provision to change the examination city after the application process is over. GATE helpline centres at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), have asked candidates to wait until November 15, 2016, after which they can make changes in the examination city choices.
However, the exam brochure clearly states that the GATE 2017 authorities will not accept any requests to change the examination city. To clear the confusion, and confirm if students will be allowed to change the city or not, PaGaLGuY spoke to the GATE 2017 Chairman, Prof G Chakrapani, IIT Roorkee. He said, “Initially it was decided that candidates won’t be allowed to make any changes after the application process is over. Hence, the brochure states the correct information.”
He continued, “After receiving innumerable requests from candidates, we decided to allow them to change the examination city. I don’t understand why can’t graduates fill the form properly in one go, why do they need to make changes all the time.”
Update: The notification to change the category, gender and examination city for GATE candidates is live on the official portal. The amount to be paid for each change shall be notified on November 14, 2016. Please note there is no challan facility. Changes can be made through http://appsgate.iitr.ac.in/ from November 15, to 22, 2016.
