GK Update – Agreements Signed between India and Singapore

Dear Readers,

India and Singapore recently signed ten bilateral agreements and
this could be important for your exams.

During his two-day visit to Singapore in the last week of
November, Indian PM Narendra Modi and met with his counterpart Lee Hsien Loong
and the President of Singapore Tony Tan Keng Yam in order to enhance
cooperation in defence, civil aviation and cyber security, among others areas.

Agreements Signed

1. Joint
Declaration
signed between the Prime Ministers of India and Singapore “to
elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.” This will widen
cooperation in existing domains, enhance regional stability and accelerate new
deals in areas like defence, politics, culture, economy and people-to-people
contact.

2. Agreement
on cooperation in defence:
This was signed between India’s Minister of
Defence Manohar Parrikar and his Singaporean counterpart Dr. Ng Eng Hen. This
will facilitate Defence Ministers’ Dialogues, joint exercises between defence
industries and cooperation to identify areas of co-production and
co-development.

3. Agreement
to extend loan of Indian artifacts to the Asian Civilisations Museum:
This
was inked between Vijay Thakur Singh, High Commissioner of India to Singapore
and Yeoh Chee Yan, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and
Youth. This will extend the loan of Indian artifacts to the Asian Civilisations
Museum of Singapore.

4. Executive
programme on cooperation in the field of art:
This includes a comprehensive
plan of action and cooperation in the field of arts, museums, archives, monuments,
libraries and exchange of technical experts and students for the period
2015-2018. It was signed between Vijay Thakur Singh and Yeoh Chee Yan.

5. Operationalisation
of technical agreement to share white shipping information:
The Technical
Agreement on sharing White Shipping Information was signed between the nations’
Navies in July this year. This will facilitate bilateral cooperation in the
area of maritime security. It was signed between Vijay Thakur Singh and Chan
Yeng Kit, Permanent Secretary for Defence.

6. MoU on cooperation
in cyber security:
This is to promote better cooperation and information
exchange related to cyber security between the Computer Emergency Response
Teams of the two nations. This will be done by establishing a wider framework
for future dialogue, information exchange on cyber attacks and research collaboration
in smart technologies.

7. MoU in civil
aviation:
Signed between Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Singapore
Cooperation Enterprise (SCE), this MoU will enhance mutual cooperation in several
areas of civil aviation services and airport management, beginning with the
Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports.

8. MoU on cooperation
in planning:
Inked between NITI Aayog and SCE, this deal promote exchange
of information related to urban planning, waste water management, solid waste
management and public-private partnerships between the two government agencies.

9. MoU on cooperation
to combat illegal drug trafficking:
Inked between India’s Narcotics Control
Bureau (NCB) and Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), it will promote exchange
of information on trends in illicit manufacture of narcotic drugs, psychotropic
substances, etc and on those arrested on drug trafficking charges. The MoU aims
to establish direct contact points between the two organisations and achieve capacity-building,
skill upgrading and knowledge development.

10. MoU for capacity-building
in urban planning and governance:
This will facilitate participation of
government officials from India in capacity-building programmes in urban
planning and management. This was inked between the Town and Country Planning
Organisation of India and the SCE.
