Having a clear view of JEE Mains 2016

Board Exams are about to get over and engineering entrance exams are paving their way into the students’ life. Thus forcing them to put on extra efforts in limited time available. The first entrance exam, JEE main is going to be conducted by CBSE on 3rd April 2016(offline) and on 9th and 10th April 2016(online). Admission criteria to Under Graduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs, other centrally funded technical institutions, institutions funded by participating State Governments and other institutions includes performance in class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination and in JEE main.

The Paper-1 (B.E./B.Tech) of JEE main will also be an eligibility criteria for JEE advanced for students willing to seek admission into the IITs/ISM Dhanbad. States of Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Nagaland and Madhya Pradesh have joined the JEE main system. Therefore, candidates seeking admission to colleges in these states which were earlier admitting based on their state level exam have to appear JEE main. Rank List for admission into the NITs, IIITs and other participating institutions  is prepared by taking 40% of the normalized board exam score and 60% of JEE main score.

JEE main paper consists of 90 objective questions with equal weightage to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The total marks of the paper is 360 with -1 for each incorrect answer. Now since the past few years questions are more based on concepts and application of concepts which makes the paper a moderately difficult one.  It has been 3 years since JEE main came into existence so I would like to present a detailed analysis of JEE main which will help the candidates to get a clear view of what they have to prepare in short time.

Physics section is generally tough. Some questions include lengthy calculations while some require application of concepts. In 2014 most of the questions were from the main branches of Physics and very few questions were from the topics which are out of league such as semiconductor devices, communication systems etc. While 2013’s paper had enough weightage of these topics. In 2015 physics section was around 45% tough and 10% lengthy which again rings a bell of danger in my ears for this year as well.

Chemistry section is usually simpler, mark scoring and time saving which could be utilized in solving other 2 sections. Usually Physical Chemistry has a greater weightage as compared to organic and inorganic chemistry.

Mathematics section is not as tough as physics but little lengthy. It usually comes as moderate and scoring compared to physics.

Now after having an over view of the exam you are going to appear in a few days I hope that you would definitely like to get some tips on preparing for it. So here they are:-

1- Keep on revising formulas each and every day so that you don’t miss any formulae based question in paper.

2- Revising alone isn’t suffice, for scoring good marks you need to practice as many questions you can. This will build your confidence and increase your speed.

3- Don’t try to learn anything new just keep on revising the topic, concept of which is already clear in your mind.

4- Practice previous year question papers in 3hrs by using stopwatch. This will give you your speed and time analysis.

5- Since last year JEE main has started repeating previous IIT JEE objective type questions so practice them also.

6- Don’t waste even a single minute of your day utilize it as much as you can. Just remember “The bad news is time flies but good news is you are the pilot”.

7- Don’t panic or get nervous in the exam hall just be relaxed and keep a track of your time and no. of questions attempted.

8- Don’t attempt those questions in paper which you aren’t so sure of, as there is negative marking scheme for wrong answers.

Wish you all the best and hope you all do well in your exams and score good marks and rank.
