IIT Kharagpur students protest outside director office after hike in hostel fee

The student community at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) is not happy with the 20 percent hike (Rs 8,000) in hostel fees. Students were informed about the hike yesterday, December 20, 2016. But they were unhappy with the decision which led to a protest outside director’s office, for the whole night.

Due to the protest, IIT- Kgp Director, Partha Pratim Chakraborty, Registrar Pradip Pyne, had to spend the night in their respective offices. An official from the institute, who wished to remain anonymous, told PaGaLGuY that though the hostel fee payment portal opens on December 26, the college administration had informed the student community about hike in advance. The official said, “The management did not expect that this decision will create unrest in the student community.”

Some of the student representatives met the management today to discuss about the hike decision. “As of now, the management has not released any statement. Further discussions about reconsidering the fee hike decision are likely to place over the next couple of days,” added the official.
