MP government expected to make CMAT compulsory for MBA seats

According to an advertisement issued by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), students will be able to seek admission to MBA courses in Madhya Pradesh only on the basis of their Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) marks and not on the basis of their graduation marks. However, the Madhya Pradesh government is yet to take a final decision in this regard.

This advertisement was posted by DTE following a decline in the number of students opting for the entrance test in the past couple of years. Until now, the state has been admitting students based on both, their graduation marks as well as through an entrance test.

Most teaching and industry officials believe this move will help improve the quality of education in Madhya Pradesh. Speaking to PaGaLGuY, Priti Mishra, Assistant Professor (Management), Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal, said, “Due to a lack of proper and uniform admission process, the quality of students admitted to MBA courses in Madhya Pradesh is not up to the mark, when compared to those of other state universities. This eventually results in poor output, and very few students get placed in good companies. It’s a vicious cycle that needs to end and hopefully with CMAT made compulsory, this could change”.

The move is also likely to bring about an increase in the number of students applying for the entrance exam and make the admission process honest and free of frauds. “This move will be a big jolt for a number of colleges in the state that had been admitting over 70% of students on the basis of their graduation marks. The admission process will be transparent hereon and may also force fraudulent colleges to shut down,” said Sumeet Maru, Director, Ch Edgemakers, MBA Entrance, Recruitment and Communications Coaching Institute in Indore.

When contacted, the DTE spokesperson was unavailable for comment.

The CMAT exam is an online examination that is conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Initially it used to be conducted twice a year but now onward it will be conducted just once a year.
