UPSC Civil Services GK update – Angelina Jolie: A special UN envoy for refugee welfare

In this article we are discussing the current events regarding the UNSC spacial envoy Angelina Jolie.Renowned actress Angelina Jolie has criticised the United Nations Security Council for mishandling Syrian refugee issues. In April 2012, Jolie was appointed as the UN’s special envoy to take up refugee issues. In her new role, she is focusing on major crises around the world, be it mass population displacements or contributing to find solutions for people stuck between wars. She has previously represented the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as ‘Goodwill Ambassador’.

       Jolie reprimanded the UNSC for not providing adequate assistance to refugees. UNSC has failed to implement the resolutions they passed in 2014 regarding the humanitarian assistance to Syrian civilians caught in the country’s civil war.

        Since the conflict began, more than 220,000 people have been killed and 1 million wounded. Nearly 4 million Syrians have fled and registered as refugees in neighbouring countries, while another 7.6 million people were displaced within Syria. Overall, an estimated 12.2 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN statistics.
