What to do after CAT?

As we know, CAT is the most prestigious entrance test for admission to the leading B-Schools of India.

In the recent past, a few leading institutions which used to hold their own entrance tests have abolished the same and all admitting on the basis of CAT alone. Since CAT is taken by nearly 2 Lac students, one requires a very high percentile score to be called for interview in the top B-Schools of India. In case a student makes it to that great, one is likely to get admission in leading IIM’s or similar institutions. However, the member of such students is limited to the top 5000 only.

The students scoring less than 90 percentile face a real dilemma. The options before them are the following :-

1) Take the CAT exam again

Many students who donot want to compromise decide to prepare for the CAT exam again. However we don’t recommend the way out for the simple reason that

· It relays your career by exactly one year since CAT exam is held only once in a year

· Preparing for a single exam throughout the year is too risky and boring

· There is no guarantee that you would score high enough to make it to the B-School of your choice; what if your score remains almost the same

2) Take other entrance tests

Some university departments and institutions still hold their own entrance test. The students are advised to check the same and take these entrance tests. In case they make it they will have the advantage of paying very low fee since university departments are state funded.

3) Shortlist B-Schools which are not in the elite category

Students with percentile score from 70 to 90 are advised to make a list of such B-Schools which do not figure in the top 15 category, yet they are reasonably good. This short listing should not be done on the basis of ranking by just one magazine or newspaper. Out of this list, the students can pick up three or four such institutions on the basis of their fee structure, location, infrastructure and placement record, etc

4) Students with a low percentile of 70 and below

These students are advised to take MAT or other similar tests after better preparation. There are certain reputed institutions which accept MAT score as well as apart from CAT. This will help you to save a year for yourself.
