2. no need for CV copies.. your profile form is enough and most important!

for the other questions come up with your own answers since they will be more convincing.. for joining simsr chk mani's post in the call getters thread.. pg no 42 or 47 afaik

Hi friends,
I had my GD/PI at KJ Somaiya on the 26th 1.30 pm slot.
We had to verify our docs first along with the Work ex certis
First there was an Essay, you have to choose from among two topics We get 15 mins to write it .
We Got the foll topics:

  1. IT is losing its sheen as a career option

  1. Good Communication is not about what u say but how u say it (something on these lines..)

I chose the 1st topic .Guess the essay came out to be pretty decent ..say a 7.5/10 .

After that, there was a Case Study about the dilemma of a certain Rajan Iyer who ws a meritorious student throughout while his sister was an avg one who after her grad got it into a PSU .now Rajans parents have spent a lot on his education abroad (some 40 lacs on his engg and another 30 on his mba) .After all this US goes into recession and Rajan faces the dilemma of either choosing between staying in US to try to get hold of a good job (which he has been unsuccessful so far) or returnin back to India .He feels a need to gratify his parents esp after all that they have spent on him.So wat should he do now?

We get a monologue of 90 secs initially where lot of good pts came up .Once the open discussion started then started the real fight with 3-4 ppl simultaneously speaking for smtime ..thot it best to be a mute spectator as no 1 is goin to listen anyways ..eventually the Panel had to interrupt and remind us abt the perils of a fish mkt (-ve mking etc etc) ..then the GD restarted but alas One guy still persisted on cutting across any1 who tried to move their lips ...(Saw the panel shake their head in disapproval ..tch tch )

I pitched a few times n gave a few points.. Any 1 person was asked to summarise the GD in the end ..2 -3 ppl almost pounced here too but 1 reigned supreme ...

I will dwell on my PI now..
There were two Panelists (both Ladies;different from the GD panel) P1 and P2 and Me !. After an exchange of pleasantries..
P1:Ok..So Kunal wat do u do ...
Me: blah blah ...
P1: Oh so ur working in XYZ co . Why are u interested in this programme ?
M: Answered
P1 & P2 nod ...
P2: So tell me about 2 challenges that u faced while setting up a team in XYZ company ?
M: Answered...P2 looks very satisfied
P1 (looking at my profile ): So you have a great talent in Drawing ...Y don u pursue it and develop it all the more ?
M: Yes ,I would love to do that ..If i can find a great business plan where combine both my interests for systems as well as drawing then i ll def do that ...P1 smiles ..hmmm
P1: So tel me abt the proj that u did @ TIFR
M : told ...
P1:(looks at my profile sheet) so Y do u want to do an MBA ..I mean it may happen with the current situation that u may end up earning less that wat
u are earnin rite now ?:wow:
M: (Oh damn ...am i goin to b demoted !!! hoping she was js kidding )
blah blahed abt chasing my dreams ..
P1 :So wat all NGOs are u associated with ?
M : Answered ..
P2:Any reading habits ?
M: Read the works of Leon Uris ..its based on WW1 and 2 and the cold war era etc etc ..recently read Mario Puzo's omerta .
M: mentioned Paulo Coelho works that i had read n also Chetan Bhagat
P2 : So wat did u like abt Alchemist
M : The way the shepherd boy never loses sight of his dreams inspite of numerous set backs and how he learn to believe in himself ..
P2 nods ..
P2 : So any questions for us?
M: Asked ..
P1 & P2 answer to my satisfaction ..
P1 ,P2: Thank u
M: Thank u !
A Very Chilled out interview ..The panelists made me completely @ ease ..so turned out to be a guud one :
Every1 in gnl was having it gud here ..so dunno if i cud make a mark ..

overall a very decent Essay - GD -PI
Best of luck to all other aspirants!

Regards ,
Kunal

Hello people! Here's my experience.
Course: PGDM-IB
Date: 26th March, 2009
Time: 9.00am
Venue: IIFT Bhawan, New Delhi

Reached the venue at 8:30 as instructed in the call letter. There were around 40-50 students already waiting for the process to start.
At 9am we were taken to a room on the 2nd floor where everyone was seated. There were around 6-8 panel members in that room. They told us about the structure of the entire GD-PI procedure. Then the registration procedure began. Names were called out one by one and we were supposed to take our CAT Admit Card, Score Card and student profile form to get registered. None of the other documents including the attested copies were checked till the end of the day.
After the registration was over, we were shown a presentation on SIMSR. The campus and everything else looked really good. And the hostel looked simply awesome.
15mins later, once the presentation was over, sheets for essay writing were distributed. The essay topics were displayed on the projector screen. We were given 15mins:

ESSAY TOPICS
IS THE INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM KILLING THE CREATIVITY OF PEOPLE?
OR
CELL PHONES: A BOON OR BANE?

I chose the 2nd topic and did a lot of cell-bashing talking about the health hazards of a cell phone and people misusing camera phones n blah blah blah. Concluded it by saying that still it has become a necessary evil and one can't imagine a life without it now. Finally time was over and the sheets were collected. One good thing was that we were reminded about the time when just 2mins were left so that we got ample time to conclude our essays.
Then we were divided into 4 groups for our GD n PIs. My group consisted of 11people. Each group was taken to its respective GD/PI room. The panelists(2 very polite gentlemen) arrived within 5mins and we were made to sit according to our registration numbers. As expected the GD was a case study. Here's a summary of the case study given:

XYZ(Don't remember his name) worked as a guard in a village. A few days ago his brother had a serious heart problem and XYZ had to take his brother to AIIMS, New Delhi all the way from his village since there was no good hospital in the village. Also, since XYZ could not afford the medical expenses, he had to take a loan with interest of 50% from one of the banks. Since his brother needed him, XYZ had to quit his job as he could not take such a long leave. Now with no money, no job and very little chance that he'll be able to pay off the loan XYZ's life is in riuns. As a member of the Govt. of India what measures should be taken to avoid such things from happening in future?

We were given 2mins to read the topic. Then we all had to speak individually for 90secs and talk about all the measures that can be taken.
After this, we got another 12mins for our GD. Since everyone had already spoken about his/her points, we had a really good GD and there was no fish market at all. A lot of things were discussed like improving infrastructure in rural hospitals, stopping brain drain by giving better packages to Doctors, providing subsidies to rural medical facilities, encouraging doctors to work in villages by providing some benefits and better facilities, etc etc. In the middle of the GD I pointed out that we were to discuss the financial aspects of the situation also so that XYZ could afford to pay for the medical facilities. This turned the GD towards providing insurance in rural areas and lower interest rates in loans for people with lower income. Finally after 12mins one of us was supposed to summarize the entire GD. He did so and the GD ended.
Then came the PI. All the GD panelists swapped their rooms others. There was a lady and another very chilled out man in our room. The first person to go in was a girl. It must be her bad luck or whatever, but she got badly grilled on her acads and work-ex. She was an electrical engg and working as a s/w professional. So her interview was mainly technical and both on electrical and software. After we got to know about her interview we were totally devastated thinking "aaj to bohot beizzati hone waali hai".
We were all preparing ourselves mentally to have a pure technical interview when a guy came out and told us that he was not asked a single tech question. He was an engineer too. He had written that he was interested in politics and so the PI was purely on politics. His interview went well. After that person whoever came out was very relaxed and told us that it is a chilled out interview and they aren't asking any technical questions at all. The interviewers suddenly seemed to have had a change of heart. Good for us. Finally came my turn and I went inside:
2 panelists:
Cool Guy: CG
Nice Lady: NL
and ME
The most surprising thing was that the whole interview was in hindi. I was confused so I answered in Eng to be on the safer side.
CG: Hello! Aa jao andar.
ME: Greeted both of them.
CG: So ab to 2ghante oh gaye hain jab se interview start hua hai. Kya kar rahe the itni der?
ME: Nothing much sir. I was just sitting outside and waiting for my turn.
CG: Aur tumne research nahi kia ki hum kya pooch rahe hain.
ME(smiling): Yes sir. A bit of research.
Both started laughing.
CG: To kaisa laga humara interview. Variety thi questions me?
ME: Yes sir. A lot of variety.
Both smiled again.
Just then a guy entered and kept 50-50 biscuits and juice for both the panelists. CG offered me the biscuits but I told him I had just had something.
CG: Naashta kiya tha aaj?
ME: Yes sir.
CG: Kahaa aur kab.
ME: About 45mins back while waiting for my turn. I had gone outside to a vendor in front of IIFT.
CG: Good good.
NL(Looking at the form): Your handwriting is bad? (I had mentioned it as my weakness) So why do you think it is bad?
ME: Ma'am some people say that all the words are too close and some say that I try to write in a cursive manner and fail miserably so ti gets spoilt.
NL: You get influenced by people very easily?
ME: No. Its just that I take a feedback about what they think is wrong.
CG: Sachin Tendulkar cricket khelta hai as you must be knowing. And in India eveyone is a cricket expert. Aggar wo sab ki advice lega to khelega kaise?
ME: No sir I meant that one should hear everyone's advice but then you have to filter out the things that you also think that should prove to be valuable.
Both of them nodded their heads.
NL: So how did you improve your handwriting by taking their advice?
ME: I have started leaving some space between letters and I also don't join all the letters so that it looks a bit neat. Also you'll notice that I have used capital letters in my student profile form so that it is even clearer.
NL nodded.
NL: Ok. Why IB? Why not any other stream?
ME: I think want to go into IB because I want an Export/Import related profile.
CG: Kya Export/Import karne ka profile?
ME: Cars.
CG: Why cars?
ME: Because I am very interested in cars and I know a lot about them so I think I will be happy with such a profile.
NL: What Company would you like to get placed into if you get into SIMSR?
ME: I wanted to work in German firms like BMW, Mercedes but I have heard that they don't hire much from India. But then I can work in some other firm for about 2-3 years and then try to get a job in these firms later.
NL: Ok. So which Indian car firm will you want to work with?
ME: Maruti Suzuki.
CG: But Maruti Suzuki to bohot kam paise deta hai.
ME: Sir in Indian firms there are not many options. Maruti, HM, Mahindra and perhaps 2-3 more.
CG: No No. Mera matlab tha firms jo India me recruit karti hai.
ME: Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Skoda.
NL: Why japanese firms only?
ME: Only Honda and Toyota are Japanese. Hyundai is Korean and Skoda is Czech.
CG: Haan matlab why these companies?
ME(After I couldn't think of a very good answer): I have driven their cars and I feel that they have a very good drive quality and comfort.
CG: Aggar car firm me placement nahi hua to kya karoge?
ME: I'll try to get a job in some other firm which has a similar profile and then later try to get into a car firm after gaining some experience.
CG and NL: Ok. You can go now. All the best for you result.
We were free to go home after the interview. So that was it.
I think the interview was ok types. But I don't understand why they didn't ask anything regarding my work or acads.

Also there are 2 things I wanted to get clarified:

When the interviewer asks questions in Hindi how should a person reply? Since one panelist was asking questions in eng and one in hindi was it ok if I answered in eng?
None of the attested photocopies and original docs were verified. I hope I didn't miss some part of the process. Aren't they verifying the docs?

15 mins flew away.... wrote a decent essay (arnd 1.5 page)

Case Study

People buying cosmetics and youngsters going for cosmetic surgery. Are these cosmetics really worth using or they are just a waste of money and time. Are the companies making a fool out of the customers..... I hope the case is clear
90 second monologue: Did well here..... fumbled a bit in the middle but gave a good ending to my speech
The discussion: 8 people tried to put forth their point of view. ONE of them was spoiling the discussion But all in all I would say- No fish market. I chipped in with 4-5 concrete points and tried not to speak when that "ONE" was talking
Summary: Two people were asked to summarize. Both sitting besides me .... They tried to chip in with new points. Wonder how that would be taken by the panel

Personal Interview
P1- A guy with a tie
P2- A guy w/o a tie
Me- Moi

P1- Hello navjot. We thought your name was navjot singh sidhu
P1, P2, Me -
Me- Gave them why I was given the name and the story behind it... blah blah
P1, P2-

(P1, P2, looking at my form for a good 60 sec :wow:The silence was killing - Me smilling though :D)

P1- (finally)- What is your stream?
Me- Information Technology
P1- What is that?
Me- Told
P1- Does it benefit the borower or the depositer?
Me- Both and gave a logic
P1 not convinced
P1- You go to an ATM. Does it benefit the borower or the depositor?
Me- borrower hmmmmm depositor... depositor and gave the logic
P2- Now you understand the difference between the borrower and the depositor (and laughs)
P1 joins in
Me joins them

P2- You interested in Marketing... I see...
Me- Yes sir... brand management

I was expecting a question on brand management and the long pause......... They both were reading the answer for why SIMSR where I had written "I would enter the insti as a product and exit it as a brand" (P2 pointed to that line for P1)
Now I was certain about some grilling..... And Sh**!! No questions

P2- You have a lot of ECAs? Vaise wats an ECA?
Me- told

P2- You were the captain of the college volleyball team? You heard about beach volleyball?
Me- Yes. It is the newest form of volleyball
P2- Difference between normal volleyball and beach volleball
Me- gave 1 difference. The most obvious one
P2- Thats it? :wow:
Me- Gave another... This was a more technical one
P1- Have you played beach volleyball?
Me- No. Seen it on TV

P2- You were the house captain? Tell me something about your role.
Me- Told

P2- What is RAC (my summer project)?
Me- Explained
P2- What did the company for whom you made the project get? And what did you get?
Me- We didn't do any project for any company, it is a canada based training organisation that helped us in the project
P2- But I am asking, what did they get?
Me- It was a paid training. They got the money, we got the knowlege
P1 smiles :D... P2 shocked (but why )
P2- (to P1) You have any questions?
P1- Oh yes :wow: offcourse I have :wow:
Me smiles

P1- Have you seen a coin?
Me- :wow:Yes
P1- It has a head and a tail. Why is it called a head and a tail? Why isn't it called top and bottom?
Me- :wow::wow::wow: (still smilling)- Never thought about it
P1- hmmmm
Me- But sir, maybe this head and tail is a british concept and they called the side with the elizibeth's head as head.......
P1- and the side with elizebeth's tail as tails....
P1,P2, Me-
Me- No sir. Maybe some animals tail. Just to identify the two sides
P1 still laughing

P1- And what about the indian coin?
Me- The lion capital side which has 3 heads is the head and the value side is the tail
P1- But sometimes both the emblem and the value is on the same side? Now?
Me :wow::wow:- Then the side with emblem still remains the head and the other side becomes tails.

P1, P2 smiles- ok.. neva mind

P1- Who devised the term Global warming?
Me- I don't know sir
P1- No problem
P1- You know any IT company that emerged in india and no longer exist? Name 2 3 4 5....
Me- (thinking) No idea sir
P1- No problem again... You are not suposed to know this anyways :wow:
Me-
P1- Some wild question on 2004 elections I don't even remember.
Me- No idea sir
P1- Ok one last question.... When was the first PC formed?
Me- (pouncing on this one).... 1981 or 1982......
P1- guess one
Me- 1982
P1- Its 1983.... But you were pretty close
Me- :D(Exhausted by the unexpected rapid fire :wow:)
P1,P2- Thank you navjot. You can go now. All the best
Me- Thank you sirs :D

It was a long PI. Around 20 mins. Don't know what to make of my performance.... That borrower depositor was the first catch and then the rapid fire where I couldn't answer a single question.... Had no idea about it except for the last one

Waiting for your views puys.... Mani

any idea when r d final results supposed 2 b out

No hard facts, but expected around 18th April..

During my GD/PI, the panelists had told us that the results will be out in the 1st week of April only. They also said that it'll be available on their website.

I had my GD/PI in IIFT Delhi at 1:30
IIFT bhawan, on the ground floor lunch was being serverd.....
thought it was for us but before GD and Interview i didnt even feel like eating..
The process started at 2.
After the presentation we gave the Written Communication Exam
Tpoic : Is Cat score score a judge of Business accumen of a person
Dont remember the second one
I wrote on this topic only.
Went for GD : It went quite well, NO FISH MARKET.
The case study was really good. Enjoyed the discussion.
Interview Process after that : I was quite tensed as i tend to become nervous in interviews.
3 Panelists P1 , P2, P3
P1 : How has ur life been so far?
me : Great !!, had a lot of fun along with studies in school and college
and has been great , working in TCS, so i m enjoying my life.
p2 : so u said u have a good observation(its my strength)
me : yes i m working as a tester and a tester has to have a good observation in order to do your work efficiently.
Some more discussions regarding good observation, i had to give examples
p3 : is there any ministry for marketing in our country?
me : no.
p3 : r u sure?
said yes.....
p1: why have u opted for HR + Marketing
explained....
they were not convinced
tried to convince them again.
Panelists Started smiling and even i smiled.
p1: u like singing. wat kind of songs du u sing?
me : told
p1 : wat has been your role in your ban?
me: told
They asked about the topic of gd
i explained the whole case study
p3 : how many times u didnt let others speak?
me : i tried to give a fair chance to everyone and entered the gd
when the noise level was the lowest but sumtimes u have to be assertive to put your point forward
p2: ok All the best
me Thank you so much........

i dont know wat to expect, i think i did well but u cant be sure with
GD/PI.

Puys... I had one observation when I was walking around the rooms where the GDPI was held at SIMSR.. I spoke to few puys and surprisingly many said that the GD was a fish market..

Am sure none of u puys wud have created the chaos but u have to equally take the responsibility that ur grp mates dont do so..

Take ur time.. break the ice between urselves b4 the GD.. make everyone understand that u guys re not gonna make a fish market at any cost..

If still someone does so.. try not to add to the noise.. play smart.. chip in with good points wen u re sure that the panel will notice that. :)

@navstone... well done buddy.. its always good to show "learning attitude" in a PI... its a +ve sign u have showed.. for the GK questions u cud not answer.. i dont think they matter much.. so chillax... 😃

Hey has anyone of u have asked about the weightage given to each gd_pi_essay? and when do they declare the results? sorry for going off topic but these guys might know the best of these questions

A very valuable observation. Thanks for the advice! SIMSR GD/PI is over but I will follow this strategy in the GDs for other colleges for sure.

GD PI for the 2009-11 batch is almost coming to an end and its time to get the results which will possibly come within next 15-20 days

I guess everybody should now have many queries about the college, students, infrastructure, placements, IB as a course etc

People can refer to this community for answers of most of the FAQ that we had last year

Best of luck to all of you

@Sandzie.. urs is probably the only interview which went on the stress line.. but dont worry.. stress interviews are always bad but the results re not so.

why is mba mba.. ha ha.. we dont have mba at SIMSR.. we have PGDM

thanks.. 😃 my smile was intact

yep.. the pgdm part was pointed out by the panelists..

now a long wait for the results...

Had a damn Wacko GD PI experience!!!:wow:

KJ Somaiya,
Mumbai 9.00 AM

I know this wont help anyone this year, but maybe next year!!
Anyways.. started off with registration, and the regular formalities. had essay topics:
1. is academic scores supposed to be the only criteria to evaluate students??
2. does mobile phone reduce the need for travelling, if yes, why r trains always full??

chose the first topic. decent essay, 7/10. couldnt conclude no warnings given.
went on to GD. i suppose 4/15 students were absent.
got a damn wacko case study about this Chintamani guy who had a family business of gaments in Colaba , Mumbai with Rs 30 Cr turnover. his US educated kids want their share to diversify into telecom and computers. so what would u advice as a family friend??
was a semi-fish market situation, with just 3-4 people dominating. was cut off repeatedly 1st GD u see!!!
just gave about 2 points.. that too nothing earth-shattering.

Had PI next. i suppose mine was the first Stress interview!!
had 2 panelists: One Damn pretty lady (L), apparently from the Finance dept. and one semi-balding Southie guy(G).
Began with simple questions about hobbies and Favourite authors.
then (G) started accusing me of Copy+pasting my resume from somewhere else, as i could not speak the SAME material written in my profile sheet.
tried to explain all questions calmly.
Major Googly:
1. Which company owns TOI? (told)
2. Who is the owner? (didnt know)
3. What exact field i want to choose in Marketing? (told.. MR)

Minor Googly:
1. Sensex-working (told.. i think!!)
2. why not MMS from my college? (told)
3. who is Finance minister? (Manmohan)
4. first name of P. Chidambaram? (Palaniappan)
5. about types of research in MR (basic n applied, explained)

thats about it. just the fact that (G) interrupted me at every possible opportunity, and tried to entangle me in my own words.. was pretty decent in the end.
Asked what score do u expect outta 10?? i said 3/10
(G) in mock-irritation says, u did much better than that!!
no confidence??
i said... No overconfidence!! humility!!! ;)
Waiting for results.. apparently theyre gonna be out ONE DAY after the IIMs so as to avoid excess paper-work of cancellation of IIM Converts.

Im not taking admission, Mission 09 for yours truly!!
For the ones who wanna make it, Dil se,
"Besht op Luck"!!!

P.S. Serious issue, PUYs...
No cigarette Tapris near the campus!! apply at ur own risk!!!

Puys, This might sound too early but plenty of seniors are excited already to meet u guys and help u with ur queries. This is the orkut community we have created for ur batch:
