Now that the bugbear called XAT is over, it is time to start sharpening your weapons for the next stage, called the GD/PI stage. Even though the results will take some time in coming, it would be nice to start now, so that you don't lose time later on. In addition, we folks are relatively free right now, considering it is the beginning of the term () so we can probably help more.
At XLRI, we typically have only an interview for BM candidates, and a GD plus interview for PMIR candidates. Now, the interview could be structured or unstructured. They could ask you about your education, workex, the state of the economy, politics, sports (in my case ) or anything under the sun.
Focus on developing the following skills:
1) Confidence - If you know the answer, be confident, to the point, and nail it. If you don't, be confident, and admit that you don't know. DO NOT try to bluff.
2) Leading the interview - Try to give the interviewer some 'ammunition' to ask you the next question. Take control of your interview. This is not as difficult as it sounds. You'll need to highlight whatever part of your life that you want them to question you on. (I'll elaborate more, once you give me specific examples)
Of course, being well-groomed, well-dressed, polite, and blah is understood! And yeah, reaching the venue on time, not being noisy, having your papers in order etc. is also recommended. (Lastly, when you leave the interviewers, DON'T forget your file. I had done that last year in my PMIR interview. :sarcasm:)
Do keep writing, and we shall attempt to address all your concerns.

Yes, XLRI interviews are very focused on who YOU are, and how you think. Typically, your opinions are asked about various things, apart from the usual stuff about your acads/workex/family background.
So, in an XL interview, it is good to have opinions. However, be sure to have a rationale for each opinion. For example, if you think Indian football will improve if we hire someone like Juande Ramos as a consultant-cum-manager, be sure to justify it with fact, figures, and blah about Ramos.
Also, it is good to know information about your hometown, the place where you work, or the city you studied in.
For reference, click here to read through last year's experiences for both BM and PMIR courses.

Ash, they might. 😃 But when you say, 'messed up' what exactly do you mean?
We can surely discuss, and outline a 'damage control' plan, just in case you need it.
All the best! (And congos on the call)

Ill Answer the common FAQ before you even try.....
When will I get written coomunication about my result?
Before first week of Feb.
When and where are the interviews held?
Historically, its only in 4-Indian cities - Jamshedpur, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai. Usually in the later half of Feb.
What is the weightage of XAT score (or any other criteria) in selection?
Nobody knows, except the admissions committee of course.
Why no GD in BM?
I wish I knew. But to think of it, GDs are a complete waste of time anyway.
What's the call to convert ratio?
Only 1 in every 5 gets selected from the interviews.
I have both calls
a) Do I have to give a preference in the Interview?
Only if they ask
b)Which one do I chose? and How?
Convert both calls. Choose one. Refund the other.
It will be your interview which decides your selection, not your preference.
For people having both BM & PMIR calls, the interview and selection process for both of the calls are independent of each other. But keep in mind that the profs taking your interviews are aware of the courses you have applied. Beware of this fact when answering "why PMIR? or why BM? or why XLRI?"

I got a BM call
now in my essay i've written :
the current economic meltdown has sounded the deathknell for capitalism in its pure form.
Basically i went and defined both capitalism and socialism and how socialism failed and how pure capitalism is failing and how we have a hybrid of the two.
Can anyone comment on how good/bad this essay was, what i'd be grilled on and what i should read up on..
Hi Pratyush,

Now that you've been shortlisted for the GDPI, chances are that your essay will be read by the interview panel. What they see in the essay is still a mystery. They can see anything from verbal ability to creativity to hand writing to general knowledge. Heck, they can even be mapping your subconscious thoughts projected in your essay to your responses in the interview. In short no one knows.
What can be done if asked on essay is too justify the stand you have taken in the essay. XL interviews rarely turn into stress interviews so its safe to assume that you won't be grilled on the stand you've taken. But then it all depends on the mood of the panel.
Read up on what you've written. And have a good reason to have written that. Our topic was on Gender Imbalance. After I had written the essay I realized that some lines in my essay seemed rather Anti-feminist. So I went prepared to justify that it wasn't.
Don't spend much time worrying about crappy essays, and blame your luck if they do reject you on the basis of your essay.
Rightly said, Tapan!
Also, I'd suggest if you've written something blatantly wrong in your essay, and you know it, it's ok to admit your fault there, and be prepared to shift your stance.
Contrary to popular belief, bschools don't look for 'people who stick to their stance'. However, they do like it if a person sticks to a stance if it is correct, but is flexible enough to revise it, if it it wrong.
I hope that helps. 😃
