[2010-12] Discussion thread for TISS HRMandLR GDPI call getters

BSNL Restructuring

Guys please go through the following & try to have a view point on the HR angle involved.

BSNL should reduce its staff by a third: Pitroda panel
Pitroda panel says BSNL has 1 lakh excess staff - NDTV Profit

"BSNL should also start a performance-driven culture and complete the absorption of staff from the Indian Telecommunication Service without delay."

One of the recommendations of the panel headed by Sam Pitroda.

Thanks.

Also add the Air India case (15% reduction in salaries)- Is this right or wrong?

Me thinks that government employees take their jobs too easily! With their jobs secure and very little chance of being fired due to non performance, they become lethargic and don't give their 100% to their job! Govt employees must be made to perform efficiently or else face action! Air India and BSNL are two examples of Govt companies rotting due to incompetent/lethargic staff. No responsibility and accountability results in our money(tax) going down the drain!

Please note that BSNL and Air India are in a huge mess not because of the economic downturn (AI to an extent but not solely)....

Kartheek good initiative taken to discuss the more contemporary issues... But can you please quote the source for this information.

I have been trying to search for the latest on the labour laws as applicable to the SEZs & this is the latest that i could find:

No dilution of labour laws in SEZs: Centre

Also if you can read the SEZ act 2005 it clearly says that no modification whatsoever is possible to the existing matters related to trade unions, industrial & labour disputes, welfare of labour etc.

I could not find any such ammendments as quoted by you. Kindly elaborate.

Thanks.

I talked about SEZ's with my readings at multiple places and my little exp while working in an NGO,
And I have not mentioned about any amendments to labor laws, but relaxation of such rules in few SEZ's.

These relaxations are part of SEZ Act of 2004.

Please see the pasted part from the article that u mentioned
"
States that had earlier relaxed the labour laws in such zones will, however, not be required to reverse these relaxations.

"Some states got away by relaxing labour laws in these specific regions before the United Progressive Alliance came to power. But this government has made it clear that all existing laws will be applicable in states. Flexibility in hiring or firing or any other element will not be provided," a senior labour ministry official said.

At least two states -- Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh [ Images ] -- had enacted SEZ laws before the central law was passed in 2005 to provide a simpler labour law dispensation within the duty-free areas.
"

So there are some SEZ's that were approved before the enactment and they have the comfort of bypassing the labor laws.

again, not sure of West Bengal in this list as mentioned in my earlier mail.

Anyways, It's a new learning for me that UPA is strictly enforcing labor laws in
SEZ's. Thanks for that. But this below article is again contradictory rite??

In my opinion, labor laws should be liberalized to encourage investments, but the liberalization should be done with due diligence and broad views of experts.

The Govt is even thinking of increasing the minimum wages :-? This is good but if it isn't accompanied by better performance and more accountability (leading to more productivity), the firms will be a bit hesitant in investing in India.... (Though given the current situation, no company will reduce investment here)

Btw there is alot of confusion regarding SEZs laws.. :-? Can the seniors tell us the current status of labour laws in SEZs? Do some states have exemption or have those exemptions been taken back?

See guys, Just like there are different economic exemptions & rules applicable to the SEZs , there are different labour laws applicable in these SEZs.
There obviously are certain exceptions (eg: women working in the industry etc.), if you guys google for it you should be able to get relevant documents..
i Shall in the meanwhile try to get hold of a relevant document..
Frankly speaking, i doubt if these topic would be asked in your interview, but yes having this knowledge can give u certain brownie points in the interview (if ur able to bring it out in the interview), nevertheless don't fret over this too much... stick to the basics.

Wow..

TISS came up with list of hotels around and their contact numbers.

This is really helpful for Outsiders like me who have to reach a day in advance..

If some one has missed the SMS, pls refer to the link below.

-Kartheek.

Exactly my point!

There are some states who have made certain relaxations but till now the central government has not approved of these amendments at their level.

The Gujarat SEZ Act, 2004 has made key provisions with respect to the appointment and termination of labour for units established in SEZs.
Gujarat has been the pioneer of these changes, as in the article below:

Two Cong CMs want SEZ law on Gujarat model, CMP in the way

So basically they have got a few amendments done to the Industrial disputes act as in the following attachment:

But we as aspirants are not supposed to know all this in great details, so only the knowledge of what act got modified & where should suffice.

Regards.

Friends its really nice of you contributing so much on the forum. I am able to follow but not share anything bcos of hectic work schedules...

I also feel at this stage we just need to have some pros and cons about any issue, deeper study would not be expected of us.

I think the seniors can best advise us on this...
Am i being a saint? to not indulge in doing something wrong wont propel me towards sainthood dude. but yes doing something wrong would definitely take you towards being a sinner. and listen just because everyone else is doing wrong doesnt justify the wrong as right. and yes it is a rat race. but do you know why? because rats like you made it one. the point i'm making is the institute doesnt want people who mugged up their stances on social, economic and contemporary issues after getting a call. they would rather want someone who's learnt them through life experiences and was constantly motivated to learn something and make an impact. yes it is necessary to brush up within the last few days. but that shouldn't lead you to pirated links. the government has many active portals running from where you can get any info on the govt policies and latest legislations. and you have a pleothra of authentic websites for genuine opinion on all issues.

and above all i believe its our (the indian youth's) duty to not follow the same thing that's been happening since the past 60 years. Lets make a difference folks. why cant we just be totally committed towards nation building through proper values?

but i know people like you wont understand this sentiment. so i apologise for being a saint. GO AHEAD. SIN AND MOTIVATE OTHERS TO SIN LIKE YOU AS WELL.

My friend I feel, for becoming a successful HR personnel the most important thing is not losing your cool....

I think both of you are right in your own views. We can never grow as professionals if we do not learn to respect other peoples' perspective instead of taking them as personal insults.

My friends if you become a successful HR after qualifying your Master's from TISS, and you are employed in an industry sector where you need to interact with labors, who are just worried about their survival and the wages that they get, your theories of morality wouldn't work there.

I think my other friends on the forum would agree with me. So its better to close this discussion now.

After going through last few posts i want to express a few thoughts,

1. My dear brothers and sisters why are we agonizing? Let us be polite, practical, and helpful, This is one country and the sum totality of the events of individuals residing in this very country represents one unique India,

My friends if you become a successful HR after qualifying your Master's from TISS, and you are employed in an industry sector where you need to interact with labors, who are just worried about their survival and the wages that they get, your theories of morality wouldn't work there.

2. Let us not move to any such conclusions my friend, let the thoughts hover around at present, we all are labors, working our way to future, Ratan Tata, APJ, Manmohan and the marginal all are labors, may be some voices are heard by some are not. Even we competitors are all labors trying to get a qualification so that we can move ahead in life and help our families and societies.

3. and yes to err is human, we make mistakes too, but that doesn't mean that the opposite end have to become so angry and reflect in such a way,

4. For the studies part i have left studying except the bio-sketch, Why do you want to pursue this course?, daily newspaper, and of-course realizing my inner self and what i actually want from life.
This is TISS not IIM, IIFT etc., and they have already judged our worth through written exams.

One last question...
In GD we are not supposed to fight... we are supposed to come to a viable conclusion collectively, Is there any use of dueling?

Dueling? na na..Gd means discussion..but a boring discussion i not what is epected! A lively discussion will leave a better impact i think :-?

hi puys...
tell me one thing .... will we be given a case study or GD topic to discuss upon...
?
and also are u guys done with the Aswathappa hr cases....
do u feel the need to go through every cases... ?

Go through every case? No ways..just use aswathappa toh brush up some basics of HR!

And GD can be anything..a case study or a topic

Hi frenz...
sorry to chip in late .. actually could not contribute due to hectic schedules...
I think at this stage we should focus more so on introspecting and preparing on all types of PI questoins .. alongside with a thorough inspection of newspapers and "forming opinions" on current affairs...
Social issues plus HRm related concepts I think sticking to the basics would do..
Attaching a doc with famous HR gurus/ sociologists of all times... though this may not be the complete list of personalities....

happy studying n tc :)

Rhucha....

attaching the doc
