[2011-2013] Goa Institute of Management (GIM) GD/PI Experiences

My GIM experience,

Slot: 1st March 2011 1:30 PM
Venue: Woodrose Club, Bangalore.

Profile:
XAT: 97.05%

Around 25 people reported for the second round. We were divided into two groups, our group had 13 people. The panel was the same for GD and Interview. The panelists were - Mr. Nirmalya Bandyopadhyay and Mr. Nagarajan Ramamurthi. Mr. Nirmalya did most of the talking, while Mr. Nagarajan observed the candidates very closely.

GD Topic: Governance is at a new low in India.

We are asked to sit in a particular order. Everybody was given 30-40 seconds to make an opening statement and then the topic was open for discussion. I pitched in second and talked 4-5 points during the discussion, my central seating position gave me an advantage here. Tried to give the discussion direction a couple of times when the group digressed from the point. Overall the GD went well.

I was 7th to be called for the interview. Most of the interviews went on for 15-20 mins.

Me: Good Afternoon Sir.
Interiewer: Good Afternoon, take a seat.

Int.: Show me your XAT scorecard.
Then he started looking through my certificates and asked me, Why MBA?
Me: Answered, interviewers seemed satisfied.

Int.: Why should we take you?
Me: Again some gyaan.

Int.: What will you contribute to the college, if you are selected?
Me: Mentioned a couple of things.

Int.: Did you prepare for GD/PI with some institute?
Me: Yes, sir.

Int.: Yeh, the answers of all you people are the same, we have been listening to the same answers all the time.
Me: I said, they only help, the thought is ours, they just help us articulate it better.

Int.: These poeple have set answers, they tell you to say that you want to be an entrepreneur or do social service and you will get selected.
Me: Sir, its not like that, in fact I do have a couple of business plans and I believe that a business education would help me...

Int.: OK, lets hear your business plan.
Me: Explained them, looked satisfied.

Int. (Out of the blue) What is your percentile in Quants?
Me: 84.66.

Int.: And how much did you score in your grad in Maths?
Me: Sir, my score in Maths is a bit low.

Int.: All Engg. have this problem, their Maths score is low.
Me: Confused Looks....

Int.: What other calls do you have?
Me: Told all..

Int.: So if you get IIM-L you won't join GIM, right?
Me: Sir, I am not in a position to take such a decision right now. I would like to convert all and then take a decision later.

Int.: I do not believe that you are going to leave IIM-L and join GIM.
Me: Repeated the same thing.

Int.: If we give you a seat it would be wasted.
Me: Sir, I have not converted the call yet, it is all in the future.

Int.: Yes, but consider a hypothetical situation.
Me: Answered something do not remember now.

Int.: That' all, all the best.
Me: Thank you.

Lasted for about 10 mins.

Result awaited.

Nothing was asked frm acads, work-ex or current affairs.

Only one experience from mumbai so far! Come on ppl, post ur experiences.

Gd evrybdy had to make an opening statement.. But towards d middle it became a fish market (got 2 know from a guy tht othrs outside wer blaming me for it  whtever! I realy dont think so & infact i hav always been realy cordial in mock & actual GDs as wel.. i hope d panelists think d same )

thus we wer stopped in b/w & sir said people r not discussing but fighting & so v were asked to summarize.. & then write a 200-250word summary, in 5 mins, which if turns out to b realy bad could result into elimination.

Overall it was nt as gud as any of my mock or actual gds hav been til now

PI : I was lucky enuf to be d 1st one (#$%@*%)
Same 2 panelists wer there, an old sir (S), young sir(Y), poor me (M)

M: told, also added tht i was all india 8th rank holder in 2nd yr

M: explained..
Seemed ok wid d answr

Y: askd abt wrk ex, d compay, nature of my job
M: explained in detail

Y: ur performance in maths has been consistent (bad),(nat 57.xx).. So hw do u plan to cover up for tht?
M: tried to explain (& hell ya i wil cover for it, if make it to GIM, no matter wht )! Didnt counter question..

Y: Hobbies
M: told, (howevr it seemed he was looking for something like reading books..) told thm nt an avid reader.

M: explained.. (wasnt counter questioned)

Y :do u hav any questions..
M: nopes

Thank you (bye bye beta dobara mat aana, kuch nai ho sakta tumhara ) :splat:

I wasnt asked anything related to d current affairs.. But then evn 2-3 people whom i met aftr their interview got ovr, wernt askd abt current affairs, at all.

Overall i dont think it went even remotely close to what i had expected.

Anyways best of luck to the rest !

My GIM GD/PI experience,
Slot: Monday, 28th Feb 2011 1:30 PM
Venue: YMCA International House, Bombay Central, Mumbai.

Around 18 people reported for the second round. We were divided into two groups, our group had 9 candidates. The panel was the same for GD and Interview. The panelists were - Mr. Raghuvir Vernekar (Int 2) and Mr. Amarendu Nandy(Int 1). Before starting the GD, Mr. Vernekar gave us some insight about the college. He was asking everyone the question 'Why GIM?'. Basically he wanted to know whether we have done our research w.r.t GIM. This session acted like an Ice-Breaker. Mr.Nandy came forward and explained to us the entire essay process post the GD.

GD Topic: Privatization hasnt worked in India.
We were asked to sit in a particular order. Everybody was given 30-40 seconds to make an opening statement and then the topic was open for discussion. I was second last and tried to put in some valid points. Participation from the entire group was pretty good. Everyone got an opportunity to speak. Overall the GD went well although a few students tried to raise their voice during the GD. I was 3rd to be called for the interview. Most of the interviews went on for 15-20 mins. Entered the hall and was asked to wait inside for 5 mins coz the panel were sorting out some papers.

Panel: Come here
Me: Good Afternoon Sir.
Panel: Good Afternoon, take a seat.

Int 1: What is ur XAT score and asked me why so less in QA?(QA-48.xx)
Me: Sir, this time XAT was out of this world. Dont exactly know why I scored less in QA.

Int 1: Yes I agree, this time's XAT was very tough. You have scored 63% in ur BE?Howz that as compared to the rest of ur batch?
Me: 63% is not excellent but above average as our Topper scored 70-72%.

Int 2: So you have done Diploma instead of regular 12th Standard?
Me: Yes Sir. Explained to them about 3 years of diploma after 10th and direct 2nd year admission to engineering.

Int 2:Which means you have wasted one year na?
Me: (Confused..)No Sir. Regular Graduation is 10+2+4 = 16 years and mine is 10+3+3 = 16 yrs. So I havent wasted a year.

Int 2: Okay. How have you gained from ur Diploma? Do u feel you had an advantage in ur BE over other students?
Me: Explained the pros n cons.
Int 1: Tell me difference between FDI n FII's
Me: Explained.

Int 2:(Going thru my BE markesheets) What did u learn in PCOM (3rd year engineering subject)?
Me: (Couldnt remember a thing!) Mentioned random topics inside PCOM - GSM / CDMA / Radio Frequency / Double Spotting...
Int 2: Difference between GSM n CDMA? Which is better and why?
Me: Said.
Int 2: (Digressing from the topic) I wanna buy an Internet Data Card and which one do u suggest?

Me: Tried comparing the Data Plans (Daily/Monthly Plans & Unlimited/Free Plans) of Airtel/Reliance/MTS/Tata/Docomo and suggested Xyz brand (currently using) because of their competitive rates and Pan-India Network Coverage.

Int 2:Hmmm but why brand Xyz and not brand Abc
Me: The rate plans of almost all the brands look competitive and since I have personally used Xyz brand and liked its connectivity hence suggested it to you.
Int 2: How are you able to remember all the Data Plans you just mentioned?
Me: I used to interact with the Telecom salesmen coming to my office. They used to give us their pamphlets.
Int 2: (Now, A bouncer from him!!) Ok hmmm. Tell one of ur salesman friends to come here before 5.30 PM with the Data Cards as we want to buy urgently.

Me: (Trying to show as if I'm unfazed) Ok sir, Will Do.
Int 1: Tell me about your current job profile.
Me: I work for firm PQR and explained them abt my role and also tried to include why I wanted to do an MBA.
Int 2: Is ur firm PQR Ethical?
Me: I dont know about the Top Level Decision Makers but yes my current work environment is pretty much good.No politics and no favouritism.

Int 2: As compared to ABC, the public perception regarding ethics of ur firm PQR is not so gr8. Almost 50% of the students would opt for firm ABC in the placement process although both firms ABC n PQR were linked to the 2G telecom scandal.
Me: (2G Scam - My Fav Topic!) Yes Sir. In India, the public perception can be changed by controlling the media. Hire someone to write good abt you in the newspapers and your image improves. Gave a few examples and a bit of gyaan regarding TV and print journalists linked to the 2G Scam.

Int 1: Before joining firm PQR, you worked for a Recruitment firm. Why did u switch from ur Eng background?
Me: Gave the reason and also explained about my learnings here and how it has helped me grow as a person.

Int 2: Suggest me a good cellphone having 3G/Wifi/Apps/Video Calling?
Me: Mentioned a few high-end brands and compared them.
Int 2: (Not looking convinced)
Me: (Took out my recently bought cheap China Made cellphone and was virtually trying to sell it to them) Sir, this has QWERTY buttons, Messenger App, Stunning Looks and a Facebook button all for a price of under Rs. 4.5k/-
Int 1: Facebook, huh? (Cutting me short) Are you on Facebook?
Me: Yes Sir.
Int 1: How many friends do u have on Facebook?
Me: (Dint remember. But tried to look confident and quickly gave any random number) 476.
Int 1: Oh, so you have 476 friends on FB?
Me: (Whats the big deal?) Yes.

Int 1: Ok I'm done. (looking at Int 2)
Int 2: (Writing something on a piece of paper) These are our phone numbers. Tell your salesman friend to contact us asap.
Me: Sure sir.
Int.: All the best.
Me: Thank you .

Lasted for about 35-40 mins.

I really dont know what to expect now. Was it an interview or just a normal chat that Interviewer 2 was having with me??

Overall, the entire process was very well conducted.

All the best to others 😃

queries

1)do we need to get a CV for the interview
2)or ar ewe supposed 2 fill any form in the begining mentioning details?

GD Topic: Too many Engineers and too few dreamers

Gave us a brief description of GIM and asked us if we had any questions. Few were asked and the GD process parameters were mentioned including the fact that the writing section of about 5-7 mins about the topic was more or less an eliminator!
Well after getting a minute to think over the points of discussion, the GD started. And sorry to say but just like any other GD I have been a part of this one quickly turned into a free-for-all. I glanced over and it didn't look like the 2 gentleman were impressed.
Anyway I tried to squeeze in a few points here there but before you knew it we were supposed to give a minute's summary with me being the first in line to do so. Then came the writing part and I tried to make up for the sub par speaking quotient.

PI:

With that out of the way, I was soon called in for the interview. As the elderly gentleman(P1) was going over my profile, which he thought was unusual, the interview started with the younger gentleman(P2) joining us. P1: Asked me how and why I am planning on shifting in the management direction after being in the technical side for so long.
Me: Gave my rationale about it.

P1: Where I worked and how much I earned?
Me: Told him so

P1: How I would rate my performance in the GD?
Me: Said a 7 or an 8.
P1: Really?! You barely got in any points in the mess!(At least furthered my belief that they didn't like the ruckus in the GD)
Me: Told him what I could that I don't like to interject people in between and whatever point I did make was of some substance. Don't know if it worked.

P1: Then again what I thought about the whole topic!
Me: Blabbered something, taking some points from what I wrote.

P1:What is so different about having an B.Tech degree and an MBA? Who would be better off?
Me: Kinda tricky but told him that an MBA would give me a broader perspective etc etc.

P2: Curious about my score in M.S and why my Analytical section score was low in XAT?
Me: M.S score part i answered and said that I was a bit surprised myself about the Analytical part and just didn't work out for me that day.

P1:Asked about my family background?
Me: Told

P2: Being an Engineer why only 80 odd in Quant section of XAT?
Me: Again a lame excuse.

P1: Which vertical would I be interested in and why?
Me: Marketing and gave some points for a minute or so.

P1: Marketer or production guy, who is the innovator?(Again hinting at the GD topic)
Me: Equally important and that one can't do without the other.

And that was that with them saying thank you and me leaving in a matter of 10 mins.No academics whatsoever and nothing really about the work aspect. No current affairs or eco terms, some of which I had mugged up.

So the whole process started at 8.30 and I was done by 9.50! Thought it was short but lets see what happens.

Good luck to the rest.

Cheers!
queries

1)do we need to get a CV for the interview
2)or ar ewe supposed 2 fill any form in the begining mentioning details?

1) Do carry your CV with u, some ppl in my slot were asked to show their CV. Anyways, it never hurts to over-prepare....

2) No, u do not need to fill up any form, they have the details in the form which u filled while applying for GIM.

Batch of Interview: YMCA, Mumbai. 1:30PM

I was shocked that among the 30 calls only 19 were present

actually it is a good news for being selected but I did not expected.
Process Started at 2PM. We were 10 in panel 2.

GD: Privatisation did not work in India
Gave opening statement: "I would not say privatisation did not work in India but Privatisation did not work the way it was expected but overall it worked" (I was neutral to be FOR or AGAINST)

in between spoke only for half minute that comparing India with other countries, we have high government intervention in private sector. and this also was said by Vodafone's CEO. (I was against the topic)

and Closing statement: "Privatisation has worked on its part but we need goverment sector to be more efficient and give competition to private sector which will ultimately serve end consumer"

Could not speak much as it was my first GD in Institute of my life and there work-ex people with knowledge. and I am also not fluent in English as I studied in Gujarati medium till 12th. So my GD was not so good... but good than PI.

PI: Same as with all. 2 in panel. I was 2nd to be interviewed

all prepared like why MBA?, Scams, Budget, Why GIM? additional skills...

Me: Can I come in sir?
P1:Please come in. Have a sit. First of all sign on this sheet (It was attendance kind of paper)
P2 was talking on phone ordering refreshments and came...
P2: As a manager, will you be able to cope up with change?
Me: Yes Sir.
P2: So don't say sir... call us by name (I would not say the name)
Me: Okay xxx
P2: hmm...
P1: Tall me something about yourself.
Me: (First goof up) Started with schooling. told about academics and extra curriculars where i couldn't find a word and stopped while speaking for 10 seconds
P1:Wt do u want to say? I am asking about yourself and wt r u saying?
*I wanted to say manythings in about myself but could not...
P1: you play volleyball... what is the height of the net?
Me: around 8 foot
P1: Exactly what?
Me: it is different for men and women
P1: what it would be for you?
Me: Don't know exactly. But the ground is 18 x 9 metre
P1: For how many points is the match played?
Me: till 25 points. Must win by 2 points
P1: Did you see the yesterday's match (cricket?)
Me: No sir, I was in Bus to Mumbai. But I read in newspaper about it. (But he did not ask further about the match)
*In between he showed my marksheet of First year BBA to P2. I think he shewed my marks of Maths/Statistics in wich I had 98 marks out of 100.
P1: Don't you think you should have an experience first then do MBA?
* I had prepared the answer for that but could not say it effectively as I forgot all there
Me: No sir. In the two options doing MBA now and Having Ex and then doing MBA, I will earn more in the first option. (Could not say this answer effectively and they were unsatisfied)
P1: You are talking about earning. I am talking about learning. don't you think you will learn more having work-ex?
Me: No sir. We freshers are like "Blank slate". You can write whatever you want on it. and people with work ex have something written on their slate.
P1: We don't want to write anything. we don't want to shape a stone and make an idol.
I stayed quiet...(what I should not have done)
P2: you didn't told about your family
Me: told
P1: wt business does your father do?
Me: Suiting and shirting show room
P2: He is a shooter?
Me: No sir. Suiting means suits(pointing to my blazer) and sherwanis. He gives it on rent in marriage.
P2: Oh i see. I thought shooting. (Both laughed. me too)
P1: What do you know about ratios? tell me some of ratios
Me: Current ratio, Liquidity ratio...
P2: what is liquidity ratio and what it shows?
Me: told
P2: wt should be the standard?
Me: 1:1
P2: why?
Me: liquid assets should be equal to liquid liability to meet the liability at any point of time. (it is right answer but I gave it as I was confused. I curse myself)
P2 gave me examples of two companies 1 had 0.1:1 and other had 1:1 ratio and asked which is good provided that 1st company has good credit and able to get loan to meet its liquid liability
Me: the company with 1:1 ratio
P2: why???
Me: taking loan results in more liability
P2: then the company will sell its long term assets to meet the liability. then?
Me: it is not a good option
P2: you are saying the company which have idle money is good while other which is managing good with liability is bad?
* He however convinced me that first company is better. (I should not have been convinced. should have defended)
P2: What is your father business' liquidity ratio
Me: Around 2:1. (It really is but i should not have said that)
P1 to P2 asking if he wanted to ask anything
P2: do you want to ask anything?
Me: yes sir. If I fortunately(Which I should not have said. should have showed him confidence to make it to GIM) make ot to GIM, will we get an opportunity to see Mr. Romould D'souza? (Founder of GIM) or attend his lectures/seminars?
P2: (looking at P1) He is actually 85 right now and has several health problems and he has started new b-school. so busy right now. but you may get an opportunity to meet him (and also told something about him)
Me: Ya sir. he is great. just got Padma shree award on january 26, 2010
P2: hmm
Me: Thank you xxx(p1), thank you xxx(p2)
P2: good

* between the conversation I once said "sir" and he counted "1"

I want to ask seniors:
please tell me how was my interview? how are my chances? provided that they might have felt that my communication is not so fluent and maybe lack of confidence.
Please tell me good / bad points of my interview

I am very serious about GIM and i have no other calls right now
I m calculating, according to the attendance I think out of 1700 only 1100-1200 will attend. wt say?
Reply Seniors... waiting...

GD topic: What worked yesterday wont work today.

My interview experience: I was the first one to be interviewed in my group and the professors who interviewed me were very rude right from the start and made a few condescending statements when I could not answer some academic related question. I think they did it deliberately to stress me out. Did anyone else have such an experience?

hey i was in your slot man. I think i was the third guy to be interviewed. They were rude to me too. They kept harping on for about 10 minutes about low graduation percentage and low XAT percentile. Asked me y i should be taken because i would perform poorly in GIM as well and were condescending right from the start as well. Before leaving though I told them about a few other calls and my GMAT percentile, so they piped down a little, dunno if that made any difference. They were definitely not very polite, I can say that.

Yea..so I guess this is their ploy. To stress us out and see how we deal with it.
I was asked what my fav suject in engineering was. I said Internet communication engineering. So one of them asked me "tell me about the subject". So I began with how the internet came about and how it was initially conceptualized and the interviewer immediately cut me off and said, "I didnt ask u for a history lesson, tell me about Internet communication". So I tried saying something different and he said "thats not technical enough, answer technically" the other prof made a sarcastic comment along with it.

Finally I started talking about the protocols and the various layers. I said there are 7 layers. He said there are 5. I said Im sure there are 7. He asked me to name them. I named some, couldnt name them all and he looks at the other prof and says, " uh..and this is his favourite subject!!"

They even went on to say things like Im not manager material.

Me : Thanks Sirs.(:wow: I was still in a shock by their behavior)
O : Any questions?

I am satisfied with my performance except my essay. It is going to give me sleepless nights.

All the best for other puys.

Batch of Interview: 2nd March, 1:30 PM , Mumbai

GD topic : What worked yesterday wont today?
Smooth start, a bit of a digression towards the end. Overall one of the better gds i ever had.
Essay to be written in 5 min (but we were given just 4 minutes, infact when the next group had their essay, they were informed when 30 secs were left, no such signal for us, hence couldnt complete the conclusion)

PI: Panel - P1 - eco prof, P2 - IT prof
Questions :
P1: tell me sumthng abt urself (family backgrnd n stuff)
me: told
P2: why MBA?
me: gave sum gyaan to get some dhyaan ;)
P2: why GIM?
me: had prepared a long story for this one but P2 asked to cut short the preamble and get straight to the point, at the end i couldnt convince p2 to the mark.
P1: fav subject
me: microprocessors
P1: what are microprocessors?
me: told
P1: which is the latest microprocessor chip in the market?
me: told
P1: what are J K flip flops?
me: (thought abt footwear ;)) told sumthng, couldnt remember more on that
P1: ny circuit designed by you using microprocessors?
me: project details and sum gyan
P2: asked abt the gd - whose example do you think was the best in the GD?
me: the subject was quite general, everybody gave pragmatic examples.
P2 interruptes me halfway : can u give me an example other than those discussed in the gd
me: gave him one, but sumhow he was not convinced, may be he wanted more of a political/legal one.
P2 : ok, do you have ny questions?
me: how do you promote entreprenuership in GIM?
P1: gave some gyaan
P2 : thats it. please call xxxx and tell him to wait outside for 2 min.

I think my PI was not that convincing, had planned to say a lot, but never got that chance to say. Except for the technical questions, I think the panel was not satisfied with my answers at all.

Anyways thanks to all puys for sharing their experiences.
Keeping fingers crossed.

ATB to all!
