[2011-2013] Goa Institute of Management (GIM) GD/PI Experiences

Finally I started talking about the protocols and the various layers. I said there are 7 layers. He said there are 5. I said Im sure there are 7. He asked me to name them. I named some, couldnt name them all and he looks at the other prof and says, " uh..and this is his favourite subject!!"

They even went on to say things like Im not manager material.

I guess they were talking about the OSI model (7 layers) and the TCP/IP model (5 layers). Hope this helps future candidates facing the same question:

ATB,

Sorry guys, couldn't respond to many queries on PM and asked on thread,as was busy with submissions.Back to business.

I have been getting PM on why GIM,what is the differentiating factor from other colleges.I think you can say in GIM there are subjects like Brandmaps and Capstone which are like games and give us real time simulation of what is happening in market and business. When the things are taught in way of games, learning happens with fun .Also, you can mention about elective - Lyrics Management which seems quite interesting to you .Bus bolne ka, aur agar kuch counter ho to us hisab se defend karna.

Now,here is an issue if everyone says the same thing then how will you be differentiated so do your research on Clubs of GIM on the website and talk about one which interests you .But still I think people can get advantage by mentioning in different panels across cities.

Also,if they ask how do you come to know you can say through seniors on Pagalguy and from your friends in college(if you have). And again,if asked which seniors ,plz plz plz mera naam mat lena no prof knows me,aur agar pata chal gaya ki main PG par baitha rehta hun toh laptop nahin kholne denge class main :wow::wow:

And those of you who have posted their interviews and feel that theirs were bad, don't think so there will be many who would have done worse than you. Also, interview is just 30% ,who knows if you have scored good in rest 70% . Ummed par duniya kayam hai ,keep the hopes:D

All the best for remaining people.
And come on others, please post your experiences so that it can be help for others.Your posting will not decrease the competition as the panels will vary and questions will vary. Also, once you convert, come here and meet each other you will connect with others by their PG-GD/PI experiences(acha toh woh tu tha )

I feel one more point can be added regarding the alumni. GIM alumni have performed exceptionally well across the globe due to which an internaitional audit firm, Deloitte has chosen GIM among 3 B-schools in India to develop a future relationship with.

Had my GD/PI yesterday...it was pretty nice..the panel was very nice...but the best was the campus...I'm from Goa yet I found the campus to be oh so oh so beautiful!!!!!Hoping to get admission...btw when is the final list out??and is there only 1 round...or more than one rounds of admission??

From what people have been posting and from my personal experience, the interviews have been very technical so far, even my interview was tech heavy. Please revise your undergrad concepts and projects. They will ask you about your fav subject. So go through a couple of subjects meticulously and also highlight what you bring to the table and how you can contribute to GIM

one of my friend is going through the process right now and he told me that todays topic for gd was "sports education should be included in normal education system" somthing lik this............
this the topic for 1.30 3rd march 2011:cheers:

GD Topic: Food Inflation is not under the control of the Indian government. Same format as the others have mentioned. Went on for about 10 minutes.

PI: It was very cool. I was asked to introduce myself, and then asked why I want to do an MBA. They followed it up with a few questions on why my marks in my 10th grade aren't great. Both the panelists were really polite and positive.

Others in my group were questioned about academics/work ex and stuff but I wasn't asked anything.

P.S. - The Goa Niwas building is pretty impressive, what with the swimming pool and all! However, finding it was a bit of an issue since it doesn't show up on Google Maps. Instead you can check out "Yashwant Place, Chanakyapuri" on Google Maps and it's really close from there.

is it necessary to take a cv with us?? i mean i got the call letter today in hand,it doesn't say so..wud it hurt if i don't carry a cv?i have all the required documents though.
my interview is scheduled tommorrow!!

GD-
Governance in has hit a new low.
We had total 11 people in my group so 2 batches were formed and I was on the 1st group. Our GD was fine. I was not able to write much in the essay round as I thik we got 4 minutes to write.
PI-
They asked about my self and a few questions on them.
I had a contrasting disucssion with the panel regarding former CJI Balakrishnan. I had said in GD that Balakrishnan's Kin had black money. The panel was asking how you concluded that. I said that I delieve on income tax dept report and CNN IBN nwes channel. I aslo said that it was very rare that powerful people were convicted in any case.
For the first 5 minutes in GD, i was able to speak only once, So i tried to speak more in latter half. The panel was asking that why you intervened with others in GD. I replied that i wanted to speak more so i did that.
They told that you points were good but they were expecting more from me.
They also told that you all missed about corporate governance.
After that they asked about my work and some technical questions were asked about my work.
In the end they asked whether i had paid bribe or not.
I answed in negative. They again asked if a situation will arise, would you give bribe.
I told that if it will be unavoidable condition, then i would pay bribe.
I told that " I am 'practically' honest not blind honest'.

I think my GIM dream is over . ATB to everyone.

Batch of Interview: 1st March, 1:30 batch, GIM sanquelim campus

ABOUT GIM:
I reached there an hour before my interview. i knew a senior studying there so met up with her n she took me around to show the campus. Its an amazing, state f the art campus. Its location might be in the middle of no where but its really v beautiful. The view is amazing on all four sides. Most of the campus was done only landscaping and some auditorium was yet to be built, they said that by the tym the new batch joins things will be complete.

GD Topic: Has government standards reached a new low in India
.

The Gd topic was not that difficult v general. so everyone was relived. All of us (14-15 in number nt very sure) was made to sit in an order and as soon as the topic was given he asked us to start. Each one f us got turns to introduce according to the order given to us n den topic was open for discussion. It started well but soon in about 3 mins (i was checking the time constantly) it turned into a fish market. Later within 8 mins something he asked us to stop n conclude in the reverse order. I was the 3rd to start. overall i think gd round was ok for me.

PI: The panel had 3 sirs P1(senior proff), P2(senior proff) and P3 (younger proff)

As i entered the room they asked me to sit down n the very 1st question asked to me was.
P1: why is your name like this?
Ans:I dint get u sir. like what?
P1: U have a hindu name and a christian sir name.. (with a smile)
Ans: explaind (was relived at that time cos i was v nervous n with dis question he just made me calm n things seemed light)
P3: ok so tell me ur hobbies..
Ans: started talkin abt my hobbies i had finished one before i could talk abt the 2nd....
P2: In your Xth u have 74.4 but your XIIth?? why so low??:splat:
Ans: had expected dis so was prepared to answer it. they seemed convinced.
P3: which was your favorite subject in engg?
Ans: Automotive engineering . It was an elective and i had taken it.
P1: well, then i'll ask u my favorite question that i always ask students :w00t:
other two panelist leans back with hands folded n smiling. (tension tension tension)
P1: draw me the pv diagram for Otto cycle and Diesel cycle.
Ans: i started to draw but dint get it correct. (in my defense, had studied it in the 2nd year and its thermodynamics n nt atall related to auto, to add to tat i was weak in thermodynamics i had a back in that subject :banghead:)
P1: its ok, i'll draw it for you u explain it to me. (was relived cos i knew it, just dint know the exact figure)
Ans:started explainin the figure and then the worst thing happens, i chocked i knew it but i dint know how to explain.
P1: smiles n says its ok leave it.
Me: m sorry sir i cant recollect it.
P2: what is turbo something. (i had never heard abt it before, i forgot the exact term he used)
Ans: sir i don't know what it is but i know the principle of turbo and i can explain to you its working.
was about to start abt turbo and then
P3: interrupts... which car do u think is the best in market?
Ans: (Finally somthin i know) in which department sir power, quality, milage , brand name etc...
P3: average..
Ans: gave my answer and they seemed convinced...
P1: with 89 percentile u might have got other calls?
Ans: not yet sir, I am expecting calls from XIME and LIBA. I dint clear XIMB's cutoff.
P2: XIME and LIBA dint call you yet???
Ans: sir their last date for registration was on the 28th so i guess the list will b out in a week's time..
P3: ok thank you so much please send in the next person in a minute
Ans: thank you sir...

Well my PI was bad. felt all disappointed after it, it lasted for 9 mins only. I was very particular about my body language and my voice and was very careful of what i spoke, presented myself very well. Had prepared for a lot f drilling but they dint ask nethin abt me or why mba or why GIM n other similar imp questions? actually the only 2 questions that actually mattered i dint answer 😐

Overall i loved the campus the collage and the atmosphere. the staff and the proffessors are nice, v poilte and friendly. I think i screwed up my chances because i was very nervous. I know i could have done better. good luck to all other puys, i think my chances at GIM is v low now
is it necessary to take a cv with us?? i mean i got the call letter today in hand,it doesn't say so..wud it hurt if i don't carry a cv?i have all the required documents though.
my interview is scheduled tommorrow!!

they dint ask me for my cv but some students had taken it... and i also heard that they had asked some students too... its not mandatory but then if u have one then take it.

its not required... but as mentioned earlier it is like a basic interview etiquette.... if u really dont think its possible to make one tonight ( which trust me very much is)... then leave it dont carry....

All the Best

Good to see so many people posting their experiences so enthusiastically over here, shows how willing people are to help out each other, would be great to have some of you here soon.

We hope the same ..... but frankly after my interview :splat: .... realistically speaking, my chances seem slimmer than size zero kareena :drinking:

But then ummed pe duniya kayam hai !!

Puys

I attended the GIM Gd/PI session on 3rd march
1.30 PM slot
Bangalore

The GD topic for today was : Sports education has to be made compulsory into the education system.

My experience:
There were 15 people in the 1:30 slot. We were split into two groups of 7 and 8 each. My group consisting of 7 people. We were called in a specific order and made to sit in the same order. The panel introduced itself and gave us instructions for the group discussion: We were to be given a topic..2 mins after that to pen our thoughts and then we were required to provide the group with a opening statement. This happened in the same order as we were seated. After the opening statements the GD was declared open. I took a stand against compulsory iduction of sports into each individuals life. while the other 6 were supporting the topic. Thanks to god that i could present the group with some valid points and after some time i could take the GD in a good direction.
The GD ended and we were asked to give in our closing statements and i was asked to start. I stuck to my initial opion and summarized my thoughts.

Advice: Try to be crisp and clear. The panel could cut you in the middle of the conversation. It dosent look good if that happens.

After this we were asked to summarize our views and learnings from the gd in a essay. We were given 10 minutes for us. But it felt like i had written for only 5 mins ... Puys the essay is important.. Please be clear of your thoughts in the essay.

After this we were asked to leave the board room and were asked to wait for our interview calls. We were again called in the same initial order.

My interview panel had
Nirmalya Bandyopadhyay Sir.. he is a great guy and i am sure he should be a great prof...

Interview Part: I was asked to submit my resume.. he scanned through the resume at a great pace. started asking me about my current work. The nature of business. What i had done in the past. Completly work ex related questions... It went good as i had solid data here....

Now started the fun part... He presented me with the question of What i understood by ethics ... i gave a good answer..
And then he asked me ... if you were offered a great package in ITC and were asked to sell ciggies... would you take it up.. do you think it would be ethical ?

I said no.. i wouldnt since i myself was trying to quit smoking and with this specific example .. i would def not take up the job...

So he went on to another example.. where he asked me to assume i was the business development head of a insurance firm and i had to cheat poor people and sell insurance to them .. knowing well that they can fail to pay premiums which will result in the cancellation of their insurances... he asked me if i would take that job. ...

I said i would and gave an explanation ...

And then he came back to my hobbies.. my interests and my goals...

All answered ...

The interview ended.. no current affairs and budget .. thank god ...
after this Both the panel members gave me great guidance for participating in GD's and interviews.. they told had a great and relaxed conversation with me which helped me learn a lot of values... :)... (now i want to get there more than anything)

And they said that i had a bright chance of making into GIM ....yipeeeeeeeeeeee :)

Puys: My advice to you..

Try to be clear.
Be confident
If you have something extra in your profile project it and project yourself as a person...

In the GD: you could have a opinion ... be honest about it .. there is nothing wrong in sharing it ..dont try to impose your opinion onto someone... and dont interrupt anyones thoughts..their opinions maybe good ..respect them and share your opinion with the group...

And if possible try to address the group memebers by their names: could give you brownie points and it will certainly help you pull their attention towards you.

Hello Puys!!

Batch of Interview: 2nd March, 1.30 PM @ Mumbai

Here's my experience @ the GIM GD-PI...

The panel (2 profs) first briefed us abt GIM, and d GD-PI procedure. One of the professors said, "You see, v need only 3 minutes to understand how u r as a person. Ur PI cud be for anywhere bw 5mins to 30mins. So d time taken in the PI dusnt determine whether ur in or out." True

GD topic : What worked yesterday, won't work today

Quite a vague topic. Found it hard to think of examples at d time. ( ) Pitched in wit a good example relevant to d topic, apart from d opening and closing statements.

(After this v had to write down an essay consisting of our views on the topic, in 4 paras within 10mins)

Was third to go for PI in my group. Very cool panel. Here's how it went...

P1: So who chose ur name?
Me: Dad

P1: So wat qualities have you inherited from ur mother?
Me: Sense of humour(:banghead: why did i say it??), etc. etc.

P1: Oh, so tell us a joke, we're bored now..
Me: Now?? Oh.. (Cudnt remember a single joke, Sad) Sir, can't remember any joke

P1: And ur saying u hav a sense of humour??
Me: Sir, actually my sense of humour is situational, I'm not good at cracking by-hearted jokes..

P1: So u can sing. Can u sing a song?
Me: Sure, why not. (Started singing "Just the Way you are" by Bruno Mars.. )

(I sang a para and P1 interrupted me)

P1: This a song in which a boy is singing to his girl. Why r u singing this??
Me: (Lol!! ) Oh yes.. Then started singing an Avril Lavigne song

P1: So u have a good voice.
P2: And the words of the song are also good.

(then began the technical qns. Just listing the qns. Could answer most of them.)

P1: So ur from the IT background. So tell me, why is Linux less popular than Windows?

P1: Why is it said that Linux is more secure than Windows?

P2: What's the difference bw C and C++? What's SQL?

P1: Whats cloud computing?

P1: Why is a graphics card needed in a PC?

P2: What have computers done to the world?

P1: What dus i in the Intel i-series of processors?
Me: Is it internet??
P1: No.

(Thank God he dint ask me wat d layers of TCP/IP are)

P1: So are u happy with Pranabda?
Me: (Thot to myself, Who on earth is Pranabda?? Den i rememberd. Studied d budget stuff d day before, so was prepared 4 dis) No, not too happy.. Explained why..

P1: You see in countries like Germany they have budgets once in 2yrs
Me: Oh that's better in a way..

P2: Ok u may leave..
Me: Thank you Sirs!!

So all the Why MBA? Which specialisatn? etc.. dat I was prepared for (thanks 2 PG) dint come in handy. Guess I'll use it 4 my next GD-PI, wenever it's gonna be

Guys preparation is the key.. And if u have a good sense of humour, be prepared to share a joke!!

Can anyone let me know the number of seats in GIM, the various reservation percentages and the total number of calls..???

Good to see so many people posting their experiences so enthusiastically over here, shows how willing people are to help out each other, would be great to have some of you here soon.
All the Best
Keep up the Good work :)

Hi, I had my GD/PI session scheduled on the 28th of Feb in B'lore. I had a measely 82%ile as my XAT score, so I knew that I had to nail my GD/PI inorder to have the slightest chance of making it to GIM. The whole GD as well as PI went pretty well for me. Ok now my query is, am I sane enough to wonder that I can make it to GIM, considering my XAT score is on the lower side? Are there any students in your batch who converted such a low XAT score?

XAT OA: 82.14; VA:97.06, DI:56.45, QA:48.34

M:Blah blah blah
4)What do you read?
M:Fiction,non fiction,philosophy.
5)What is philosophy?

His philosophy?
M:Blah blah blah
9)This is heavy stuff. So why do you want to switch?
M:Blah blah blah
10)Any question?
M:No sir.

Any other interesting thing: I expected some technical questions as people were grilled before me on technical area, but happily ..me bach gaya.

P.S.:-The interviewers were really nice.I felt completely at ease.
impratim Says
Can anyone let me know the number of seats in GIM, the various reservation percentages and the total number of calls..???

GIM has no reservations, every seat is through merit only. Although fr getting calls goan students get a concession of 15 percent, but then there is no quota for them. total no of seats 240. total i think roughly 1700 were called
