I am really confused on the approach that I should take for these entrance exams.. am certain on doing HR. PMIR in XLRI is the first preference any day.. all the coaching classes are highly cat-oriented. In which case it becomes really difficult to get an idea of how to prepare for XAT or TISS. Would like to know how to go about with it. XAT specifically. Thanks..

the best thing you can do at the moment is go through the previous year xat papers first.this will give you an idea.now for english in xat as far my knowledge goes you have to have a good command over vocabs,as it helps in rc passages.also xat puts a lot emphasis on critical reasoning questions.so try solving them.for other assistance on english go through the items in this thread posted before.
lr in xat is more or less solvable, but still practise them and try to get hold of previous lsat papers and solve it from there.you can refer to your coaching material or whatever questions thatr appear in mocks for practise,.
as far as maths is concerned ,focus a bit more on topics like geometry, permn and combn, probability, theory of quadratic equation, functions,as xat has a tendency to ask more and more questions from here.
hope this helps and ATB
Hey Puys,
I have heard that apart from XAT ,there is an ESSAY which needs to be written in 20 minutes after the main two-hour paper. Is it true?
If yes, then how to prepare for it?(Just hearing the word ESSAY makes me nervous)
Yes there is an essay in XAT and it is very important.there is a book available by name of 151 essays it wud help u to start, then follow swaminomics regularly and write once in every 15 days on any current topic on one page and in 15 minutes.
Beleive me you wud be able to do wonders and u need that skill a lot when you come to B-School.
i wrote a blog entry of my XAT experience(exam time) of last year:
posting it here for the benefit of puys ,so that u would not repeat the same mistakes
warning:its going to be a really long post, and not in best readable form as i copied it from my blog
got the paper it contained 101 questions(3 less than last year, and less negative marking compared to last year)
did not had any predetermined no of attempts in the mind, thought of attempting as many as i acan with confidence
started with english(there were no questions from grammer)
only short passages and parajumbles
started doing the paper confidently and with in 40 mins had 23 attempts in VA
haven't even seen the remaining seven questions, already had the feeling that i blasted the paper
continued to LR,seen through the puzzles and selected 2 which i thought i will attempt
done the fisrt one ,but it took close to 20 mins time (first mistake)
thought that,i cannot trust my answers in business scenarios so went with attempting the second puzzle(biggest mistake) so with 40 mins into LR i had attempted 6 LR questions along with 3 other individual questions, should have continued to QA as planned initially
but business scenario questions seemed to be very easy,so persisted for 12 more minutes and completed them
that left me with 28 mins for QA,even if i take 5 mins(worst case) i can attempt 6 questions correctly ,which would be fairly sufficient for PMIR
but pressure got the best of me..i am desperate to make more attempts
thought even though DI may take time, but i can be sure of answers ,so chose the roses and carnations set and started doing it ..10+mins into it and i completely missed the logic and i am already in panic..so with half done answers i had marked 2 options (both are wrong)
in the last 15 mins done some qa questions and they are correct ,but my scoring coming to 5 ..which is a reason to worry
in the last 10 mins of exam i can see my hand literally shaking (this is the time i understood what pressure can do to u and the importance of not just finsihing the topics required for exam but also prepartion in tackling the exam)
so after 2 hrs i know, then itself i had screwed my qa and chances for xlri
attempted the essay with half heartedness and came out
well after the results my score card read as follows
VA 99.81 QA 70.99 LR 91.98
might be i am not made up for 2010-2012 batch
might be my destiny lies in 2011-2013 batch
who knows only time can say ;)

Clearing XAT is all about strategy, pick up previous papers and do mocks and see which areas you are scoring well and concentrate on them.
XAT is not a very high scoring exam.1/3 of total questions if correct are good enuf to get u an XL call and all rest XAT allied institutes.Focus on your strength with which u can maximize accuracy rather than attempts made.

There are a lot of theories that go around regarding the XAT essays.. They range from "They check the stand u take on various issues" to "They perform a handwriting analysis to determine the sort of person u r".... Honestly speaking, there's no need to prepare extensively for the essay. If u can put ur thoughts on paper in an organised manner, it's more than enough..
While just before the interviews begin, most of them begin speculating that the essays would be the basis for ur interviews, that is hardly the case. Most of the friends in my batch were not even asked about the essays they wrote. So chillax concentrate on cracking XAT.. Hope u get thru .. All the best π

how different is xat from the cat? other than the sections of course. Don't want to restrict myself to XAT. Will that give me sufficient time after the cat to prepare for the xat or should i start earlier?

XAT and CAT by their very nature are very different. In CAT u'll have easier questions. In such case, the no of questions u solve has to be relatively higher. The accuracy needs to be on the higher side as well. However, since XAT is a little more difficult as compared to the CAT paper, u'll have to ensure that even if u do not attempt many questions, ur accuracy in the ones u attempt is bang on.
The problem that most people encounter is that after CAT, they tend to get relaxed. They get bugged up of writing these exams. So they fail to peak during exams like JMET, XAT, FMS etc. The key to cracking these exams is to not believe that everything is over after CAT. U need to keep going. That's where u win half the battle. And as far as preparing specifically for XAT is concerned, I believe, the time between the two exams is more than sufficient

For the Batch 2009-2011 - GIM Cut off was 93
But for our batch 2010-2012 - GIM has given Profile based calls - they were no cut offs disclosed as such
The calls were based on XAT,Past Academic Record, Work Experience and during interview stage the XAT Essay was also considered.
However if the same profile based calls follow or not this year cannot be assured
