[2012] Ask ISB Hyderabad/Mohali: Admissions Director AM Kannan answers admission-related questions

Would it be fine if I take recommendation from a current supervisor with whom I have worked for just 5 months?

In addition to above recommendation; Is there any disadvantage if I take recommendation from a faculty member known to me during my college days about 3 years ago instead of another recommendation from a previous supervisor?

Sir,
I have query regarding the diversity point. I have been following this feed for a long time.
I am currently working in the engineering department of an OEM for the last 1 year. And as per our company policies they don't entertain a department switch until one has a 3+ years of experience in a particular function. And I would be applying for ISB 2 years from now with no experience in other functions. How would that affect my chances ?
Thanking you in anticipation.
There is no requirement for you to have worked in different departments. Even if you have worked in the same department, so long as you meet the 2 years workex criteria you are eligible to apply. What is more important in the selection process is your takeways such what you have learnt from your work experiences about your work preferences, your company and industry. If a candidate has worked in several different roles, the requirement to demonstrate takeways does not go away.

Now I am doing my Company Secretary 15 Months Management Training as full time Employee, but I have not Completed my Company Secretary Final. But I have completed my B.Com, will my workex considered for getting admitted to ISB. Will it be part of my 2 years work experience ???
If this training is part of your CS academic programme, then it will not be considered as full time workex.

Yes, your current supervisor would be fine if you feel he/she has sufficient perspective to share. Academic recommendations are generally not encouraged as the parameters to be assessed are mostly related to your professional work environment. You can use a previous supervisor, a colleague at your workplace current or previous, a client, other professional references who can share an objective professional perspective.
@ashah79 said: I have submitted my application in Round 1. However, one of my references has not submitted his recommendation. He is a person who is going to give me a great ecommendation but is a very busy man. I keep calling and emailing him but I feel a little helpless now that the deadline has passed a week ago. Can I change the reference or ask another reference to send an email to you for my application? Why would you suggest that I do?

@ISB.Admissions
Thanks a lot sir!
I had one more small query...It
In the dates field under class XII details what is the period to be mentioned i.e. is it the whole schooling period from class 1 -12 or just one year period for class 12 ?

Dear Sir,

I have submitted my application for round 1. I have been working for my company in
Engineering Services and Equipment procurement department. I have got one of my recommendations from an executive of our equipment supplier, a renowned MNC. However, in one of your above posts you hinted that recommendations from supplier personnel are not considered that credible and shall not be sought.

If that is so, is it possible that ISB could allow me to get a recommendation from some other source? or since I am a reapplicant, may be you could consider one of the recommendation submitted previous year?

Regards,
Varun

@ISB.Admissions It is part of CS Course, after completing this Training we are eligible for getting registered with the ICSI, means I have to work as Company Secretary for 2 years ?
@ISB.Admissions
Sir, you have been very kind and generous in sparing your valuable time and answering all our questions patiently.....

Actually one of my potential evaluator who was a previous supervisor is planning to retire voluntarily (VRS in a PSU setup) in a month or so. He will not have access to his official mail id thereafter. But I would be in touch with him through phone. He is a man of immense knowledge and experience but is not at all tech-savvy (given the old PSU setup he has worked for major part of his life) and I am not sure whether that he would even keep a personal mail id. Given his close working relationship with me he is the best suited person to recommend me.

Are the evaluators actually contacted after evaluation/application is submitted.
Please tell me the degree to which you actually contact evaluators post application? This is just to help in managing things better.

Yes, training, articleship, etc that are mandatory for certain professional qualifications such as CS, CA, cannot be considered as full time work experience for our admissions purposes.

Yes, evaluators are contacted if needed. There is also an email that gets sent once the evaluation is submitted. You may wish to use the offline evaluation option if you feel this would work better given your evaluator's retirement situation.

Sir

Does submitting an application early for R2, say by oct first week, has any effect on interview scheduling. Is it possible to be interviewed with R1 applicants or the application remain untouched till R2 deadline??

Early completion will lead to earlier review of your application. There is a very strong likelihood that, if shortlisted early, you would also be invited to interview early as we would like to complete interviewing shortlisted candidates at earliest possible.

Sir

Thanks for the response.

Does that also mean decision of an admit/reject could be doled out early or 15th feb is the firm decision date for R2 applicants??
@ISB.Admissions Thank You very Much for addressing my Queries.

I hope I am not repeating this question, but is it true that ISB for its 2013 batch will not consider Integrated Reasoning score?

Test

If you are interviewed with r1 applicants, the decision would be with them.
