[2012] Ask ISB Hyderabad/Mohali: Admissions Director AM Kannan answers admission-related questions

Dear Mr Kanan

My evaluator didn't realize that there is a stringent word limit for the evaluation form. He said that the response to the questions which exceeded the word limit may have been shortened automatically thereby rendering some of the responses meaningless. Could you please advise if it is possible for him to send the evaluation through email or retrigger the link ? My application number is 438

Many thanks
Abhinav

Dear Mr. Kannan

When can we expect to hear on i/v calls for R2 applicants?

Dear Mr. Kannan,

Just to let you know, I've noticed a small error in my application form. The HSC year, has been entered as June-92 to Mar-94. This is however, the duration of my entire 10+2 curriculum, and not just HSC (XII). This might be a bit misleading.

HSC should be June-93 to Mar-94, with Mar-94, being my passing period.

I've requested the Application Center, through email at, [email protected] notifying them about this change. I've quoted my application number.

Is there any other thing, I would need to do, to make this correction ?

Thanks,

Abhijit

You don't have to worry about the smaller details - we will review all information in your application. If required we shall contact you for clarifications.

Hi Sir,

Around what time will you be sending interview calls for Kolkata for round 2?

Dear Mr. Kannan,

I want to apply for the FPM programme. My education profile is as follows:

10 - 85%
10+2 - 88%
BE - 62%

I am working as a software engineer for the past 4 years now. As you can see, I don't have a good score in BE. Please let me know how I can compensate for the low score and make it into ISB. Also, what would be an acceptable GMAT score?

What activities other than work-related ones should I take up to demonstrate leadership skills in my application and make it strong enough? What supporting artifact do you expect to validate my involvement in such activities?

Will not having overseas work experience make a lot of difference to my application?

Regards,
Prashanth

Mr. Kannan -- The ISB application asks for two evaluations to be submitted. I would like to know if it is possible to submit more than two evaluations if the candidate strongly feels that an additional evaluation would reveal important information. Thank you very much for your time! -Sincerely, Ranjit.

Please choose the two most important ones. Feel free to include any specific projects or addl important information in essay 3. A big part of the MBA mindset is to be able to choose the minimum, most relevant & most important information in all managerial situations

Sir, I have heard that companies offering their leadership programmes at ISB generally look for an experience in the range of 4-5 years. How true is that ? Does no of years make a difference ?
Each company develops its own criteria internally for selecting candidates for its leadership pipeline. ISB has no say in this matter. The number of years of workex is usually specified to indicate the level at which leadership program candidates will be absorbed post completion of leadership program rqmts.
You will appreciate that for such programs leadership traits, maturity, company culture fit, attitude, skills, enthusiasm to take on corporate operating complexities & realities and ability to generalize/transfer takeaways from specific learnings to multiple local & global situations, etc count for much more than the purely mathematical number of years of workex. I encourage you to have a look at web-sites of various leadership development programs on the respective companies' web-sites to start assessing and preparing early for the ones that interest you.
@ISB.Admissions,
Regarding PGP admissions, what activities other than work-related ones should I take up to demonstrate leadership skills in my application and make it strong enough? What supporting artifact do you expect to validate my involvement in such activities?

Hi,
I have applied for R2 at ISB for PGP 2013-2014. My GMAT score is low (Close to 600). I have a good Quantitative score (49) but not a good verbal score.

Do you look for overall GMAT score only or do you give the score in a particular section(Quant) higher weight-age than other section. If so, do I stand at a better position because of good Quant Score in GMAT, though not having a good overall GMAT score?

I am worried if having this GMAT score will significantly affect the quality of my overall (holistic view of the) application?

Thank You for your response!

Warm Regards,
Kumar Pritam

Dear Mr. Kannan,

I am a prospective PGP (YLP) applicant, and I will be in Hyderabad next month on a visit. Will it be possible to visit the ISB campus and meet with somebody from the admissions department?

According to the ISB website: "If you would like to talk to us about your profile and prospects after ISB click here ([email protected]). An Admissions department representative will get in touch with you and organise a customised interaction for you either by phone or the internet."

Basically, I am wondering if it is possible to have this interaction in person (on campus) instead of by phone or internet. Further, what do you think are the key benefits of such an interaction for prospective applicants?

Thank you very much for your time!

Yours sincerely,
Ranjit Parekh

We don't and can't recommend applicants taking up activities solely for the purpose for making an application. Leadership comes in many hues and colours and everyone has their own take on it. It is possible to have strong leadership attributes without having been an appointed, elected, promoted team leader with a formal designation. Supporting certificates are not required. We believe you and in any case our interest lies in understanding your perspective on leadership and how important is it for you to want to make a difference.

Yes, campus visits are possible. Please drop us a note as mentioned on the site. In person interaction is a good management communication habit to develop whenever possible :). Phone or emails communication is not always perfect. Plus you can have a look around campus.
