[2012] Ask ISB Hyderabad/Mohali: Admissions Director AM Kannan answers admission-related questions

@ISB.Admissions

Dear Mr. Kannan,

I have applied for R2 at ISB for PGP 2013-2014. My GMAT score is low (Close to 600). I have a good Quantitative score (49) but not a good verbal score.

Do you look for overall GMAT score only or do you give the score in a particular section(Quant) higher weight-age than other section? If so, do I stand at a better position because of good Quant Score in GMAT, though not having a good overall GMAT score?

I am worried if having this GMAT score will significantly affect the quality of my overall (holistic view of the) application?

Thank You for your response!

Warm Regards,
Kumar Pritam

GMAT scores are only one part of what we look at from an academic capacity perspective. Your academic performance will also be considered to understand whether you can handle the academic intensity & workload of the program. The holistic process also looks very closely at evidence of your leadership potential, clarity of purpose and other personal attributes - which are not captured through GMAT scores of any magnitude. Please be patient although we do understand your concern. Best of luck!

Thanks a lot, Mr. Kannan!

Dear Sir

I have applied for round 2 in ISB with my earlier GMAT score of 620 as i was working in US and the ISB deadline was very near i had to submit the application with my previous score. I just gave my gmat again and got a 710. The only factor in my application that is weak is the GMAT score. IS there any way that i can inform the adcom before they shortlist about my new score.
I really want to be in this esteemed institution and have tried my best to remove this weakness from my application.
I will be extremely grateful to the adcom if they can just consider this fact that i have a new improved score when they look into the totality of my application.
Can you please guide me who i can contact and mail my scanned copy of the new unofficial score report. I have already requested the GMAC to forward my new official scores.
Regards
Rahul

Dear Mr. Kannan,

I wish to gain your perspective over how ISB perceives the work experience of an applicant who has worked in challenging conditions in a Non-Profit with substantial impact on the host community and with subsequent development in applicant's leadership abilities, but the work has no direct relation to the past career and post MBA career aspirations. Also, how successful can be a candidate in making a shift from Non-profit to core business management area directly related to candidate's pre-Non-profit experience and educational qualifications.

Data for top US business schools shows that these schools admit substantial number of candidates with competitive Non-profit experience.

Great Regards.

Hi,

The ISB's site mentions "An interesting trend in this year was the spurt in the number of offers for various 'Global Leadership' programmes of leading companies, where the company chooses highly talented professionals and grooms them for senior management roles. A total of 87 offers were made for such roles by 27 companies – a significant rise from 28 such offers by 19 companies last year."

Would you be able to disclose which companies were these? It would be helpful to understand more about this trend. Unfortunately, I could not find much information about specific company programs online.

Please drop us a mail at ******* @ isb . edu (no spaces) with your application ref number. Just to be clear 620 is a decent score and a higher GMAT does not in itself guarantee interview or selection.

The ISB site mentions that you do not consider part-time experience. In addition, the site specifies that any work experience during a full time degree is treated as part time, regardless of the number of hours worked. Could you elaborate why? W.r.t. my specific case, I have worked full-time in outsourcing as well as attended regular college classes during my graduation in commerce ; not everyone has the luxury of studying full-time exclusively. But rather than recognizing hard work, the ISB seems to be demeaning students from a poor background who had to work during college.
Let me assure you that there is no intent to demean anyone. However, the requirement for 2 years full-time workex stands as workex is an important ingredient for participants to benefit from ISB's PGP. Please do make a note of your part-time or other workex as we are more interested in your takeaways rather than the amount of workex you have. If you feel that your simultaneous workex and studies provides us with an important perspective about your determination to overcome challenges or other such facet of you as an applicant, please use the third essay to share your perspective.
We admit applicants solely on their merit as strong MBA candidates. Good numbers of such candidates come from economically less privileged backgrounds or may not be working in sectors where the compensation is at par with mainstream industry salaries. We also have in place need based scholarships to ensure that no deserving candidate is unable to attend ISB due to economic reasons.

We welcome candidates from non-profit backgrounds to apply. Your takeaways from your workex, NGO or otherwise, are important considerations in our application evaluation. Most forward thinking employers value your skills, values, work ethic, attitude and knowledge regardless of where these have been developed. It is upto you to develop your career focus and to convince the employer that you are the right candidate for the job - the MBA can provide you the resources to develop yourself along these lines.

You appear to meet educational & workex eligibility criteria i.e., you have a bachelor's degree and min 2 yrs of workex. When you apply you would have to provide us a brief factual statement of the reasons for the gap between 12th & your undergrad degree. You must pay attention to the overall application and ensure that you bring forward your qualities and strengths as an applicant. We are not interested in knowing where you are weak in comparison to your peer group. Rather we are keen to understand why you feel you are a strong MBA applicant and what are your strengths that have made you succeed in life so far.

Hi Sir,

Myself a B.Comm graduate scored 49% and have a gap of two years in between my graduation. I also have work-ex of around 30 months. Will advice me to apply for the YLP PGP program?

YLP is for those who have not yet completed their undergraduate/bachelor's degree and are in their pre-final year. i.e., 2nd year of BComm or 3rd year of BTech etc. It sounds like you are eligible to apply for the PGP - degree & 2 yrs workex.

Hi Sir, I wanted to ask whether the shortlisting process is over or whether interview calls are still being sentďťż

thanks and regards

hello sir,
how many students will be selected through the ylp for pgp?

For YLP, 70-80 students will be selected each year.

Dear Sir,

I am an international passport holder. On ISB's Admissions page, the offer date for International applicants is listed as "within three weeks from the interview". I just wanted to clarify if this timeline is adhered to.
