[2014-15] Ask ISB Hyderabad Admissions Director: The Official thread for PGP Admissions

@ISB.Admissions

If your training period was after you graduated, then it shall be counted in full-time wkex. You can view the calculation of wkex back from 31st March 2014 when you log-in to start your application.

I have started my application process calculating my work ex with current date. Is there any chance to edit the same ?

Respected Sir,

What weightage will ISB assign for Integrated Reasoning for the 2014-2015 batch?

My Gmat score is 720, IR- 2(12%), AWA - 5.0.

Would you suggest I retake the GMAT?

Regards,
dr.ngog

@ISB.Admissions Here is my profile:10th - 76 %12th - 72 %B.Tech - 71.16 %Work Ex - Technical Writer from Feb 2011 to March 2012, Subject Matter Expert from April 2012 to present.Total work ex is of around 2 years.Have many extra curricular activities like volunteered for commonwealth games, airtel delhi half marathon.... also I m a regular blood donor with Red Cross Society. Volunteered for Earth Hour 2011 at organizational level and in 2012 as individual level. Associated with Swechha NGO from Dec 2012.

Also, I never had any leadership skill in my work-ex, although in my extra-curricular activites, I led a team.

I want to give GMAT this August as the ISB deadline is 15 Sep. Please help me suggest around what score I need? And is my profile ok to apply?

When it comes to leadership potential we look at how willing are you to lead, initiate, make a difference, facilitate a team to move towards a goal, etc. This can be demonstrated through various personal and professional situations and usually requires some reflection on the part of the applicant. You seem to meet eligibility criteria.

Please make sure you focus on your complete application and communicate clearly in your essays to answer the questions asked. If you take GMAT anytime until 15 Sept you are fine to meet our deadline.

All the best.

Respected Sir,

I am a BTech grad with 55 %. 10th - 77.6 %(CBSE) and 12th - 71.2%.
2 yrs work experience in a small IT company. Will my poor academic record be a major hindrance in the admission process in spite of getting a good GMAT score(around 700)? I want an honest perspective from ISB, since I have been rejected by good B schools for the same reason. I am passionate about MBA. And will work exp in an MNC in future improve my admission prospects?

We do not have weightages in our process. All aspects of your application are evaluated holistically to shortlist a candidate. IR shall not be considered this year as not all applicants have taken this component.

Your GMAT score is very strong. Please focus on your essays and the rest of your application as no matter how strong the GMAT score is - an applicant is shortlisted for interview only when other critical attributes are evident in the application. The selected class typically has GMATs in the range of 600-780.

@scare.crow

Dear ISB.Admissions,First of all thanks a lot for such a wonderful initiative to connect with the prospective candidates. My questions are as follows:1) Is there a facility to connect with the current students or get in touch with the students of the professional clubs related to the target industry one intends to work in?2) Is it possible to connect with an alum working in the same industry/function in which one is anticipating to work post MBA?3) When can we expect the essays for the next year's application cycle?4) Is there a calender for the admission event? I want to attend an event in Pune. Can we expect to connect with alums from the industry where we want to work?Regards, scare.crow

Please write to pgp@ isb . edu (no spaces) for connecting to a student or club. Right now may be early to speak to a club member as they are just starting to get used to ISB and their clubs.

The essay topics are available once you login to the application.

Yes, we shall have our roadshows schedule published shortly - Pune is on our calendar. Please stay tuned. You may want to write to alumni relations for specific alum queries

You sound very motivated and objective. That counts for a lot. I would suggest you call our admissions counseling team 040-2318-7474 and discuss how to make a strong application. You do have a strong GMAT score which would take care of any concerns you have on the academic front. Please don't ignore the rest of your application including your essays and your interview to convey your clarity of purpose and level of motivation to do an MBA.

@ISB.Admissions

Sir,
I am a re-applicant, but when I tried to give my last year's App ref no. in this year's application, it gives me an error "Invalid Application reference number"

2. While creating my id on pgpapp.isb.edu, I wrote my current work exp as on today and not on March 31 2014. Which one was I supposed to give? How can I correct it now?

Thank you

In the meantime I qualified CSIR-NET fellowship for research and took admission in Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in a PhD program. Here I have worked for five years and I am awaiting my PhD. Hi Sir,

First of all thanks for such great initiative. Can you please evaluate my profile?

B-tech-70%, 12th-69%, 10th-75.6%, WorkEx-4+ yrs in top IT MNCs.

I have been doing very well in my professional career so far.Got lot many appreciations/awards and recommendations so far. Also led team of some 10+ resources in couple of projects in this small timespan. Got Onsite exposure and also been involved in project management tasks to a great extent.

I am planning to give my GMAT in first week of August. Dont have many extra curricular activities to add to my list but yes have got few of them.Does this can be a showstopper?

On what areas should I focus more on my application to get it right , apart from decent GMAT Score? Kindly suggest, I am desperate to get into ISB this year(2014-2015).

Thanks!

We are not qualified to evaluate profiles. Please note that unless a complete application is filed, it is impossible to talk about selection chances etc as we evaluate your application and not specific/selective attributes of individuals.

Please feel free to call our admissions team to discuss how to make a strong application. An application is much more than your academics, GMAT score or list of activities. We are trying to understand if you bring strong leadership potential, clarity of purpose and a well balanced & positive personality. So use your essays to convey these to us.

There is one ISB. The admissions process is a unified one and Mohali or Hyderabad are assigned as 'starting campuses'. The students in both locations are part of the same class and batch and can also transfer between campuses.

Post-doctoral work is usually considered as wkex. Research done for obtaining your PhD or Masters is not counted as wkex. In your case the 1 yr as RA post your Masters in Physics may be full-time wkex if this was not part of your academic certification. Please send an email to app help @ isb . edu (no spaces) to clarify when you are ready to apply.

HI sir @ISB.Admissions

First, I admire the open discussion in this portal!!
Second, I have some doubts !!
1. There is a general saying, that ISB prefers people with Wkex > 4-5 years. Is it true ? and wkex is calculated till what time: application or admission ?
2. How good is a wkex of 2years at the time of application, if the person has managed to come in a position, where generally 3-5 yrs of wkex is seen in the same firm
3. Is there any criteria to distinguish between candidates of metro origin and small town origin. Since, people of small towns are not fortunate enough as their counterparts from metros to get the similar facilities like coaching, extra curricular, certifications , etc. , a large time of their college days are spent in becoming at par with others.
4. How are the internship opportunities during the course ?
5. Are their any differences between both the Indian Campuses in terms of opportunities and learning?
Thanks again for the initiative.
Regards
mg

Dear Sir,

I have a question regarding your expectations for the YLP application essays. In responding to the essay questions, I would like to know if it will be possible for me to express myself by means of some creative writing? Is that something that the admissions committee might appreciate? Or should I restrict myself to the more traditional and conservative corporate / business style of writing?

Thanks very much in advance for your reply!

Hi,A little light into my profile before shooting the query.I am a female with b.tech in mechanical and automation engineering. My acads are 10th- 95.4%, 12th- 90% B.tech- 78%I have an experience of 22 months as a Piping Layout design engineer.gave gmat way back last year got 680..will be retaking it in two months targetting 740.Now,my concern is I have left my job because I reached a level of frustration and this is the only time I had to get away from things I dont like and bring my career on track.I will be doing a meaningful volunteering work or get involved in some insightful internship...I want an MBA because i really need a career switch...So will this volunteering be considered as an experience?or will my application be outrightly rejected coz my paid work ex is just 22 months?Plz help

Hello Sir, I am an Assistant Manager (Mechanical Engineering) working in a German Automotive company for the past 4 years. I have a GMAT score of 700 ,good academics, short international assignment and above average extra curricular , but i am not 100% confident that the profile along with my work ex will give me the opportunity to be a part of ISB. Since ISB fits perfectly in my career path, i would not like to leave any chances to fate. Hence I plan to take the GMAT again by August end or Sept beginning after finishing my essays.

Question : Is it necessary for the GMAT official score card to reach ISB before the closing date of R1 -15th Sep or is the availability of an unofficial Score card acceptable by the admission committee ?
