[2014-15] Ask ISB Hyderabad Admissions Director: The Official thread for PGP Admissions

Dear Mr. Kannan,

Firstly, congratulations on the wonderful initiative. Coming from a non-traditional background, just wanted to get clarity on whether ISB is typically considers a profile such as mine.

I've worked as a PR executive as well as with a premier event management firm in the country as a client servicing executive and have a total of 2 years of work experience. Prior to that, I did my PG diploma in public relations and corporate communications from Xavier Institute of Communications, Mumbai (scored a distinction in the course). I topped my batch in graduation with an aggregate of 68% (BA in Political Science honors). Scored 92% and 85% in my ISC (12th) and ICSE (10th) exams respectively. Having studied and worked in sub-sets of marketing, now I would like to get into core marketing and equip myself with a management degree from a top notch B school like ISB. Aiming to score at least a 700 in GMAT (which I will be taking this Sep).

Would be grateful if you could help me understand if I stand a chance in the ISB PGP 2014-15 programme basis my profile which is so different from the usual engineering-finance based ones with 7-8 years of work experience.

Hi,

My profile is :

Xth - 88, XIIth - 84.2,BE - 65.5(ECE), work exp of 2.5 till date(will be 3 yrs by the time of interviews this Dec), Extra-curricular - Ok ok.

Please let me know the kind of GMAT score reqd with this profile to get a call from ISB for CO2015.

Also, I plan to take the exam in Oct. Would it to be too late to apply for R1?

Hi @ISB.Admissions ,
I read about the Blue Tag companies on your website. I want to know
1) how many such blue tag companies visit every year approximately,
2) their names and
3) package that they offer.

Approximately, how much package would a Finance company offer to someone with 2-3yrs IT exp. Does no. of years of experience matter more than what kind of experience we bring and our performance at ISB ??

Waiting for your replyπŸ˜ƒ

Please review our placement report on our website. It is not possible to provide such details publicly. If you are concerned about types of roles on offer, we suggest you understand the kinds of roles you would like to work in and then to understand what skills, knowledge and personal attributes are sought by employers for such roles. All companies that come to ISB and similar MBA programs require that the candidate convince the employer that they are the most suitable person for the role they have applied for.

Dear Sir,

First of all thanks a lot for such a wonderful initiative. I believe this thread helps all the ISB aspirants a great deal.

I'm from automotive back ground with 5 yrs of work ex. I'm planning to apply for PGP this year. I have two questions for you.

One: why I don't see any Automotive companies in the placements? Now that Automotive Industry has become of part and parcel of Indian Economy just like it is in many developed countries.

Two: Is there any portal where I can find ISB alumni, who are in Automotive Industry, who can guide me in right direction?

Hello,

I am a re-applicant this year. Does ISB admission committee provide a formal feedback for the rejection? How do I have to approach to receive a feedback?

Thanks.

Please call our admissions counseling team once you have logged-in. We do not provide individualized feedback but can guide you in strengthening your application for this year as each year's application is different.

Hi @ISB.Admissions ,

Do people with entrepreneurial work experience get job offers through campus?
If yes then for what profiles and domains?

@harshashish

Hi

,

Do people with entrepreneurial work experience get job offers through campus?

If yes then for what profiles and domains?

Your question is rather broad as former entrepreneurs may want to choose a large combination of industries & roles/functional areas.

Yes, students who were entrepreneurs have gone on to corporate roles post their ISB PGP. You are welcome to participate in the placement process and apply to roles that employers post.

It is important for you to think about what is it that you would like to be doing post your MBA. This self-reflection not only helps you create a strong application but also ensures that employers perceive you as a focused & motivated candidate. If you know what you want post ISB - there is no reason why you cannot successfully target the industry, role etc you seek using an MBA such as ISB's as your platform.

@Renegade550

HI sir

@ISB.Admissions

First, I admire the open discussion in this portal!!

Second, I have some doubts !!

1. There is a general saying, that ISB prefers people with Wkex > 4-5 years. Is it true ? and wkex is calculated till what time: application or admission ?

2. How good is a wkex of 2years at the time of application, if the person has managed to come in a position, where generally 3-5 yrs of wkex is seen in the same firm

3. Is there any criteria to distinguish between candidates of metro origin and small town origin. Since, people of small towns are not fortunate enough as their counterparts from metros to get the similar facilities like coaching, extra curricular, certifications , etc. , a large time of their college days are spent in becoming at par with others.

4. How are the internship opportunities during the course ?

5. Are their any differences between both the Indian Campuses in terms of opportunities and learning?

Thanks again for the initiative.

Regards

Good questions!

More years of wkex does not necessarily equal a stronger candidate. We shall compare you to your peers with similar years of wkex and our focus always is on your takeaways from your professional & life experiences. Candidates with more years of wkex and not at any particular advantage. Your wkex is taken into account until 31 March 2014 i,e., until the date you join class. We like having a range of workex in terms of years as this creates for diverse perspectives within the classroom and is essential for everyone's learning.

We welcome candidates from smaller towns and cities and would love to have a class that is extremely diversified in this regard. It just happens that more candidates are working in several of the economic clusters that are located near some of the metros. I tend not to agree with your observations regarding candidates from small towns πŸ˜ƒ We have good numbers of candidates from smaller towns & remote regions of India who are extremely strong in their own way and do not have to think or act like anyone else from another city etc . Your individuality and confidence in who you are matters to us greatly.

Our ELP (Experiential Learning Programme) provides an option similar to internships. The ELP is designed to maximize the quality of your takeaways & learnings from working on a real corporate project. Typically ELP students will deal with important decision-making mandates for companies and interact with more senior decision-makers than in an internship. This is important as ISB graduates already have work experience and they are expected to step into more senior roles. Please review the link below for more information:

Experiential Learning Programme (ELP) | Students Projects | Indian School of Business (ISB)

ISB follows a 'One School - Two Campuses' approach. i.e., the two campuses, although they are in different locations, share an integrated approach in learning, placements, interaction and all students are considered as part of the same batch. Campuses are assigned as starting campuses only and students can participate in an inter-campus exchange if this meets their learning needs.

@ranjitparekh

Dear Sir,

I have a question regarding your expectations for the YLP application essays. In responding to the essay questions, I would like to know if it will be

possible for me to express myself by means of some creative writing? Is that something that the admissions committee might appreciate? Or should I restrict myself to the more traditional and conservative corporate / business style of writing?

Thanks very much in advance for your reply!

You are welcome to use a style you deem fit. However, you should not miss the point that your communication skills are being assessed. So do ensure that your writing style is not ambiguous and your thoughts are communicated clearly.

Hi,A little light into my profile before shooting the query.I am a female with b.tech in mechanical and automation engineering.My acads are 10th- 95.4%, 12th- 90% B.tech- 78%I have an experience of 22 months as a Piping Layout design engineer.gave gmat way back last year got 680..will be retaking it in two months targetting 740.Now,my concern is I have left my job because I reached a level of frustration and this is the only time I had to get away from things I dont like and bring my career on track.I will be doing a meaningful volunteering work or get involved in some insightful internship...I want an MBA because i really need a career switch...So will this volunteering be considered as an experience?or will my application be outrightly rejected coz my paid work ex is just 22 months?Plz help

We look for full-time workex, being paid does not automatically make wkex as full-time. Please call us (040-2318-7472) or email us (app help @ isb . edu : no spaces) to discuss your volunteer work and if it qualifies as full-time work. While you may have been unhappy at your previous work, you should also consider reflecting on how you are planning out your future in a constructive way and how an ISB MBA fits into those future plans. A positive minded candidate usually comes across as a strong candidate.

All the best.

@mobinjoseph

Hello Sir, I am an Assistant Manager (Mechanical Engineering) working in a German Automotive company for the past 4 years. I have a GMAT score of 700 ,good academics, short international assignment and above average extra curricular , but i am not 100% confident that the profile along with my work ex will give me the opportunity to be a part of ISB. Since ISB fits perfectly in my career path, i would not like to leave any chances to fate. Hence I plan to take the GMAT again by August end or Sept beginning after finishing my essays.

Γ—

700 is a very strong GMAT score. Please do not neglect your essays and prepare for your interview if selected. Your unofficial scores are acceptable as on 15 Sept. however do ensure that you have asked GMAC to send us the official ones as well. You do not have to worry about when the official scores reach us.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds to apply. It is a myth that only engineers or finance people do MBAs. An MBA is for all those who are serious about developing strong management skills. Please also focus on your essays, the rest of your application and the interview if selected. These allow you to demonstrate your passion and energy for attaining your goals - which is clearly something you are clear about.

For R1 you would need to take the GMAT by 15 Sept. We do not have a recommended GMAT score. The students who have been selected in recent years typically have GMAT in the 600-780 range. Please take time to reflect on your essays, rest of your application and the interview if selected. They help you demonstrate leadership potential, clarity of purpose and key personal attributes that are not available through GMAT scores.

I may have answered your question previously.

ISB cannot force any employer to recruit on campus πŸ˜ƒ This is a question worth taking up with some of the companies you have in mind. From our understanding, the compensation at which some of the automotive & similar manufacturing companies hire MBAs in India are not considered attractive enough by those who would apply to these firms immediately upon graduation. We do have graduates however who work in the automotive sector in various ways. This includes consulting, investment banks, entrepreneurs etc. You may want to search for such graduates using networking sites or reach out to our alumni relations team on this.

Sir, my question is pretty simple, it's regarding my work experience so please clarify me on this.

I joined a diploma course after completing my Xth.

It's a 4 yr course. i.e 3+1 yr (Inplant work) course. Wherein 3yrs were academics and the final year, I had to work in an actual industry as a trainee for a yr. Worked for TAFE ltd. Bangalore.

After completing that, I joined ITCinfotech ltd. and worked there as a design engineer for 9 months. Later I left the job for doing my graduation.

I completed my graduation in engineering in 2012. Now working as a project engineer in wipro ltd. for the past 6 months.

So my question is, I've worked for a yr in TAFE (Inplant training), worked 9 months in ITC and presently working in wipro for 6 months. So would all this be considered? 12+9+6 = 27months of experience?

I've had 21 months of work expereince prior to graduation. So would that be a problem? would the 27 months be considered as work experience? I'm really interested in doing an MBA for my future career plans.

😐

Please do clarify me on this.

We consider full-time workex only after completion of first degree. In your case it appears that as on 31st March 2014 you will not have the required 24 months. If you apply, you would be considered for Early Entry
