2014 GMAT Prep and Strategies

Hi Neha, I am an Aerospace Engineer (B.Tech) working in Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for last one year in the field of Quality and Assurance. I am more inclined towards doing MBA from a prestigious foreign university or ISB but I am not sure if I have enough work experience.

My 10th and 12th marks are 86% & 84% respectively and B.Tech with a 7.8 CGPA.
Can you guide me with when I should start preparing for GMAT and what score should I aim at to get in the top 10 universities in world ? Is there any possibility to get a good institute with my background and an 2 years of work ex. considering the diversity of my field?
Thanks.

Hi

I am 32yrs old!

was good in studies , but lost myself in some experimental routes for 6-7yrs.

I am done with them ,now want to take a complete different route.

I am considerably affluent , so never wanted to do a job for money . But now want to establish business at international level , for which I am thinking of pursuing an MBA abroad , to know more about corporate world and how can I try my vision there.

Have a couple of universities in mind . Just started GMAT OG a couple of days ago.

Am damn depressed to find that my math knowledge has completely evaporated in me !

I am 32!!

firstly , will I be considered with all my old records ?

I am 88% in class 10.

92%inter

61% in MBBS ( oh those stingy professors dont give marks at all 😞 )

then.. done a film-making course . made documentaries and short films that were recognized in some festivals including Berlin then.

raised funds upto lacs in charity causes while in med. school ( cant provide evidence for that!)

finance and rotate money for 1-2% interest to local finance companies who turn it to 5%.

executing a feature film of 5cr value now.

done some local real estate deals which incurred reasonable profits , ofcourse there were a couple of backfire cases too.

well..thats all the record I have .

Aim is to apply and get dual MFA/MBA from NYU..because I aim to be in bigger production studios at international level

I am confident about MFA but scared at MBA after opening this GMAT.

I was always considered one of top students in maths while at school but now..thats some 16yrs of past!

Whats the advice ?

Will my profile ever be considered ? And Can I succeed this GMAT ?

Hi Puys,

It's been a while that I have been contributing in whatever way I can to this community and it is interesting to notice the enthusiasm and motivation of the members. Since I gained so much from the posts here, I consider it a responsibility to give back.

I have been through most of what you guys are likely to go through. From a GMAT of 650 I got 760 in my second attempt. There was a lot that I learnt from my mistakes. I worked with McKinsey Knowledge Centre for almost 5 years and quit my job once I had a call from Kellogg. It was only after paying the fees that I realized how desperate I was to work on my business plan. I have decided to work on my startup and Kellogg has allowed me a deferred admission for the next year. Which means I can continue contributing to the community.

I would be happy to answer any questions related to GMAT preparation or the application process. Though I had a lot of online material with me, it was important to know which ones to use and which ones to not use. The application process is equally important and one needs to be very careful about how the profile is presented.

So if you have any questions, feel free to ask me here, PM me or mail me (mail id in my signature) and I`ll try to answer them to my best.

All the Best to you all!!

I have just completed my engineering, I want to write GMAT, Because lately I have been obsessed with the coveted Indian School of Business. I am currently working as a Software Engineer just started (July 2013) in a Software Product company which is into Personal Financial Management Domain and is leader in what it is doing.

I would be needing some guidance, particularly like :

1. When people say, good Extra curricular's what do they mean.?

2. Shall I prepare the same way for GMAT as I would prepare for CAT.

3. I am thinking of joining the TIME weekend classroom for CAT, would that be good for GMAT prep or should I join a GMAT classrooms.

4. What is the best classroom for GMAT in Bangalore, is TIME good as they are for CAT.

5. I will be working for 2 years, so I have decided to start preparing early is this good.?

6. How would you rate a profile like this for a future admission to ISB : www.rahulraina7.com

Most importantly what to join in Bangalore for the prep.(I have asked it earlier though)

What else am I missing on, how should I approach in my current situation.

Hi, I have nearly 4 years of exp as IT professional and I would like to take my GMAT in 2014 to do my MBA dream. My question is about taking TOFEL for MBA in US. Is it mandatory to take TOFEL along with GMAT for indian students before applying to the Universities in US. Based on the suggestions I'll plan my exam preparation and schedule.

I am really passionate about investing and share market, which I believe to get fulfilled by pursuing an MBA Finance. I want to appear for GMAT and currently am pursuing my engineering degree(3rd year) from India. I'm really confused at the moment about what should I do, should I also appear for CFA to improve my application, make the university come to know how "MAD" I am about finance?

I also want to know why do most of the Indians fail to get admission in American Universities? Is it because they are not able to represent themselves well in their applications? If so, how can I improve it?

And is there something better than CFA for which I should prepare?

Please help!

Hi @neha4659 ,

What is the minimum work ex required to get an admit from a good University?
I know this question is lil non-figurative but I have read on few forums that Universities are bit wary to select aspirants with less work ex. (Mine is just 22 months 😞 ).
If it plays an imp role then which is the best time one should apply for an international MBA?

Also, is it advised to apply for an MBA in Asian University(NUS, NTU, etc.) ? Can we also opt for the ones in Australia? (Alter to US/UK, they are less 'expensive' splat but are ranked high)

I am currently, solving OG's 11,12,13 + Material provided by you..! Apart from that what should do for AWA? I haven't started preparing for it..! 😴

Sincerely appreciate all the good work done by you 😃 . Congrats for the Kellogg

Profile weakness: Do not have many documented achievements. Low score in graduation. Still, being from the first batch at college contributed heavily in starting clubs, college festivals etc. Initiator at work for few innovative ideas. Had some exposure to entrepreneurship by helping my cook set-up his own food business. So, in short, I have some stories, but not much in terms of documented evidence.
