GD:

Topic: Should peace talks with pakistan be called off?

Time: 3min to think+ 18min to discuss+ 2min to conclude(10 people in each gd)

Brief Snapshot of Discussion: 90% of the time it was a fish market. There were 2 guys who were just not letting others to speak. They were cutting n shouting. But everyone pitched in the discussion and some decent points were discussed. Reached the conclusion in the given 2 mins.

Other Salient Details:

PI for PGDIM/PGDISEM:

Questions:

4 panel members in PI. Only 1 asked ques n others just pitched in once or twice.

Totally screwed. Full acads. Hardcore acads. Wanted specific values for everything. They were like you have just 1 yr of workex n even though you have left your job last year n nt working since then you should be fresh with your 4yrs of acads. Hardly 10 mins of PI.

Misc.:  Verdict awaited but not much hopes after the catastrophically disastrous PI based only on core acads. 😞

Be ready to have a very long wait. I was in the 11am slot bt my gd started only at 2:30 even though i was in the first gd of my slot. GD groups are made alphabetical order wise. So whose names are from S onwards you might be the last people.

P2: Tell me something about you?(as expected)

Me: Told in a brief within 45-60 sec

P2: You are a 2012 passout then how could you have 35 months exp?

Me: Its an approximation till July 2015 as directed in d form.

P2: You  filled the form in November. How could you know you r going to b employed till July.

After pursuing MBA i wanna join an e commerce company that will help me to become an entrepreneur..

(Everybody stared at me dont letting me complete the sentence)

P1: Why your percentile in Quant is so low?

Me: Anything I will tell now will be treated as an excuse but d fact is my CAT centre was 30 km away from my home and I had a morning slot. Iwake up at 5 and traveld d distanc at the tym of xam my brain was not in full working condition.

P2: What was ur final yr project?

Me: Described in 1.5-2 min.

P4: Why u use 'wanna' in stead of 'want to'?

Misc.: It was a panel of 4 members. 3 were silent all the time, while one asked the questions. The Panel seemed in a hurry from the start. I hadnt even sat for the PI and they told me to introduce myself. Cut me off in the introduction. I dont know if something in the form made them decide not to take me from the start or they were bored by the introduction.

GD:

Topic: Is group discussion a sham? (No of people -10)

Time: 3 minutes for thinking, 18 minutes for discussion, 2 minutes for conclusion.

Well, if the panel wanted an answer to the question the GD topic was about, they must have got one from our group. It was mostly a fish market. Two people were shouting and a number of times were speaking non-stop. Still I managed to pitch in about 4 times with points like we need to see GDs beyond the B'School admission processes as the topic is not limited to that; B'schools GD processes have an inherent flaw that while it is supposed to be a collective process, everybody is there for individual gains; sham is too negative a word; how presence of moderators can help etc. There was some fight in conclusion as well as some people tried to come up with new points there.

PI for PGDIM/PGDISEM:

It was a disaster.

First question was the usual tell me about yourself. I started but was interrupted almost immediately by someone commenting how I look totally different from the photograph. I told I have lost weight which sparked a long discussion about how, why, how much weight one can lose in one month etc etc. And then they told me this discussion was outside the purview of interview. 😳

Then was asked about what I do at work. Some general counter-questions which were more exploratory rather than to test the knowledge. Was asked if I wanted to continue in the same field after MBA.

Second person got in asking me about convection, give a live example of conduction and convection (gave a somewhat convoluted but imo correct example), potential energy, kinetic energy, PE and KE in case of a pendulum and when the ball is thrown up. Answered them.

Then the third person came in and it all went downhill. Was asked today's price of Brent. I only remembered it from a month back and screwed up telling it was the price from a week back. Then he asked if I studied refrigeration and was asked how the tonnage of the AC required for this room will be calculated. I tried to calculate from simple heat transfer principles but he was not satisfied. Then was asked what the star ratings are and what exactly is different in a 4 star AC construction from a 1 star one. At this point I plainly told them that I studied refrigeration 5 years back and don't remember much from it. After that the interview got over.

Verdict : Not at all hopeful.

(Seniors, can you please provide some feedback. )

Number of Ppl present 10

Time: 3min + 15min + 2min

Brief Snapshot of Discussion: After 5 minutes of discussion, the GD was almost complete as everyone was of the view that it may not be the most accurate way of determining competence. But still discussions kept on. Entered the GD 4-5 times with valid points. (Topic could have been better if they seriously wanted to check the brainstorming of the candidates)

PI for PGDIM: Questions asked by Member 1

Questions: 1. Introduce Yourself

2. Explain your job profile ( they didn't get what I was trying to say in intro wrt Armament Control System and Ejection Seat of Sukhoi). Explained it again and their response was "KEHNA KYA CHAHTE HO BHAI". So explained them in layman language and they finally understood.

3. Fav subjects ( Told Power System, Machines)

4. Why 220V 50Hz is used instead of 110V 60Hz

5. Questions related to final year project (PID Controllers, Fuzzy Logic, Microprocessor)

6. Why do u want to leave HAL (also asked my CTC)

7. Which other calls do u hv

Questions asked by Member 2

1. What are your hobbies and do you have any certificate to prove them (that was his only question)

Questions asked by Member 3

None. He kept smiling in the interview and when asked by other members if he wishes to ask anything, he shook his head in negative and asked me to leave.

Time of PI : 10 min (It looked like the decision was already taken before the interview as 2 members seemed uninterested in PI and were sitting just for the sake of it)

PI for PGDIM

Four panelists: P1, P2( beautiful lady :P), P3(Dean/super-busy man), P4. Was made to sit at a distance of 5 feet from them. They could have a complete view of me.

Questions:

P3: So you have done B.tech from MANIT ......in Electrical ( grins)

Me: Yes sir (smiles) (though I was smiling and showing confidence inside I was like, brace yourself, ultimate evil is about to come, pure technical questions :P)

P1: Introduce yourself

Me: Started from work-ex to b.tech then to schooling and then hobbies (gave a short intro in about a minute)

P3: What do you do at signode?

Me: Sir I am responsible for packaging development and implementation of the same at customer's end.

P3: So, have you done any innovation in that till now?

Me: No big innovation sir but I try to keep improvising in terms of cost, productivity etc.. gave an example of the same.

P1: Why NITIE?

Me: gave some gyan on NITIE being a top notch college for operations and I am highly intrested in it..... (Man why do they even ask this question, actually I wanted to say, Ab bas...  aur na saha jaega ye struggle ab lelo yaar, deewana pagal hua ja raha hun)

P2(the lady): What do you know about operations?

Me: Some basic concepts like bull-whip effect and SCM. Explained both fo them in short. ( no cross questioning)

P2: How SCM can help in Food Bill?

Me: (for a second I was like what?.. then composed my self and gave my opinion) It would help in tracking the food supply, better management of it, leakages in PDS will be reduced as we can track every packet by tagging it through bar codes etc. Also linking it with adhaar system so as to know who received how much.

P3: What would be the biggest hurdle in implementing the same?

Me: Capital will be the biggest as we need to install the system at every point of distribution that can do scanning and make data available only.

P3: In what profile you would work in your company after studying here?

Me: SCM solution development deptt.

P4: What is Need Satisfaction Selling? (I mentioned it in form)

Me: explained what I learnt in it. Was then asked where have you implemented this strategy, so gave an example.

That's it

Was a short and speedy interview, I think not more than 6-7 min at max 10 min. So don't know what outcome to expect. though I am satisfied with my PI.

Topic: Whistle Blowers are disloyal agents

Time: 2mins+12 mins(discussion)+2mins(conclusion)

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:

Decent GD, almost everyone spoke, no fish market.

There was one goof up by the moderator in the 7th-8th minute when he rung the bell and we thought the discussion time got over and started to give conclusions, 1 minute into conclusion and the moderators told us that the ring was by mistake we still are in discussion slot only!

We were not able to reach a definite conclusion in the end as there were contradicting parties in the group, so concluded that we can't say for sure that Whistleblowers are disloyal or not.

PI for both PGDIM & PGDISEM:

It was 5 pm by the time I reached my PI room only to find 3 people there already in queue before me, 2 of them were from 8 am batch and thus had to be sent before me.

At that point of time I actually thought of skipping the interview so that I can reach airport on time, the 3rd guy agreed to let me go before him. And then came the call of the cab driver who had already reached MDP hostel to pick me up. :banghead:

'Time to take a call' -

I said to myself and finally decided to appear in the interview anyways, else all the wait since morning would go useless..!

5.20 pm and here comes my chance to enter the PI room, Panel 9.

4 members in the panel, 3 male and one female; sitting in the order M1,F2,M3 & M4.

M4: Please introduce yourself.

Me: Told my workex, BE, schooling details followed by a carefully mugged list of all my extra & co curricular achievements.

(M4 was bowled and visibly impressed)

M4: So why MBA?

Me: I want to work in leadership roles and believe that companies like HUL & GE offer direct IT leadership roles at NITIE and thats what makes me a PGDIM aspirant here.

M4: What was the last salary you drew at Cisco Systems?

Me: Told

M4: And what do you earn while working as a photographer now?

Me: I make almost double the money that I was making at Cisco.

M4: What if after MBA, a company offers you a salary more than what you made at Cisco but less that you make now as a photgrapher, will you take that job?

Me: Yes I'll definitely take that because money is not a driving factor, but responsibility of the job is. I've been writing CAT for the last 5 years and photography is just a mode of making some money to finance my MBA and to learn new skills like marketing, price negotiations etc which I would not have been able to learn if I continued to work at Cisco for another 4-5 months before joining an MBA.

F2: How many days do u need to work to make the amount of money that u make now?

Me: Told.

F2: You have also applied for PGDISEM, why?

Me: I also have interest in environmental issues, worked for 2 years with an NGO in bangalore in black spot cleanings, tree plantations etc, so I would love to get a management perspective on environmental issues as well.

F2: What would your preference in case selected for both the courses?

Me: PGDIM then ISEM.

M3 did not ask any questions throughout, now F2 asked M1 if he had any questions for me, who had been going through my marksheets all the while

M1: Tell me something about your project.

Me: Power Line Telephony, transfer voice call through a regular 220V AC power line.

M1: How is it different from a regular telephone connection.

Me: Told

M1: What was your role in your project?

Me : Told.

M1: Why are there Power electronics?

Me : Told.

M1: Where are they used?

Me: Mostly industrial purposes

M1: What about SCRs?

Me: I studied Power Electronics almost 5 years ago and hardly remember it in detail...

M1: Ok

F2: What is your total work ex?

Me: Told.

F2: That will be all. You may leave.

I answered all the questions confidently, highlighted all my achievements in the 'Introduce yourself' question and tried to steer the interview towards my hobbies and was successful in that.

No speculations about the results, will wait for the final verdict...!

P.S. It was 5.35pm by the time I came out of the PI room to run back to the MDP hostel, found the cab waiting outside and asked him to get ready to leave while I fetched my bag from my room.

I had made up my mind - "Beta, aaj to flight gayi".

Came back, sat in the cab. Opened my phone to see if I had missed any calls only to find an SMS from SpiceJet:

"Dear SpiceJet customer, your flight has been delayed due to congestion and will now depart at 7.55pm instead of 7.15pm".

GD topic : Should organizations hire for attitude and train for skills.

PI (A really short one) Panel #4 ( 3 members out of which only one did the talking, the leftmost)

In a brief account I told them I liked economics more than I did Mechanical Engineering.

The one who spoke(P1): Ohh!! So which part you like? Micro or Macro?

Me: Microeconomics

(And the rest to follow was all Macro 😃 )

P1: Explain Demand pull Inflation.

I explained him verbally.

P1: Go draw a Demand curve.

Me: In all lost senses, I just wrote Demand on X axis.

P1: No. That is wrong. What is supposed to be there on X axis?

Me: I just gave him a nod perplexedly.

P1: Come back Vijay. ( And I thought I made a fool of myself)

P1: What is GDP?

Me: Answered.

P1: What are the components of GDP?

Me: ( Duh! Easy pickings I thought) Explained Consumption being a function of Disposable Income, Investments being a function of Interest rates, Government Spendings and net Exports.

P1: What is GNP?

Me; Explained.

P1: Difference between the two?

Me: Explained.

P1: What are fiscal and Monetary policies and the Difference between the two?

Me: Started with Who controls what. Told that, the executive and legislative bodies control the fiscal policies while the Central Bank controls Monetary policies.

P1: No No..Explain the difference.

Me: ( I was getting there actually) I told them how fiscal policies are used to control the Taxes and Govt. spending and how the Monetary policies include changing the Interest rates and how every policy is used to maximize the GDP, influencing its components.

P1: What is Money Supply?

Me: ( By now I was thinking, did he hear Macro instead of Micro??) Explained what is Money supply and also how Govt. increases it at the time of Quantitative Easing.

P1: Ok. So Vijay, I'm asking you one final time, What will be there on the X-axis of the Demand Curve.

Me: (And then out of nowhere, it struck.) Sir, it will not be just Demand. Rather, Quantity Demanded( With a Smile)

P1: Yes. Quantity demanded.

P1 asked others if they wanted to chip in and they looked exhausted by then.

P1: We're done. You may leave.

Me: Thank you.

And it ended. Pheww!!

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:

Was literally a fish market, wanted to start the GD, but couldn't. Everyone was speaking like hell, nobody gave any chance to anyone.. After 4-5 min, panel interrupted & said, we are not able to analyse anything, please behave decently.. GD Started again, one person was trying to take the lead, stopped & cut down him quite a few times.. i feel i spoke well, gave few examples, initiatives by govt., cost involved, etc., pitched in many a times, got interrupted many a times.. overall okayish... In the End, initiated to conclude starting from the first person and sequentially everyone got the chance to conclude except that arrogant person (was stopped by the panelist)... 😛

Worst GD among all the GDs attended, lots of it depends upon ur luck, what kind of people are with u in a GD.. so always be prepared for the worst..

Other Salient Details: None

PI for PGDIM:

Questions:

Three Panelist, P1(Sir), P2(Mam), P3(Sir)...

P3 didn't ask anything till the end..

P1: What's your name & its meaning ? Have u applied for both courses??

Me:Told

P2: Introduce Yourself ?

Me: Told everything about my work-ex, what exactly i do, what domains i work on, with which departments i coordinate, what all safety precautions we take, with which all contractors & what type of work i have been involved in...All the big names (Companies from both india & abroad) i have worked along with..

(They Seemed pretty satisfied considering the big brand name i have been working with)

In between Canteen People interrupted in & asked for tea to everyone..

i started again.. about my college, positions of responsibility, fests organised, merit certificates i achieved, my hobbies..

P2: she was looking after my profile sheet, and asked me about a scholarship which i had mentioned receiving it by Ministry of HRD (NITIE also comes under MHRD it seems 😉 ) .. she inquired about the details, how i got it, what all parameters were considered, how many people got it

Me: Told

P2:  U initially worked in a Electronics company which is matching your branch of engineeering, y u left it within 3 months.. ???

Me: Told how i was not much into software coding, wanted to get into oil/power sector, the results came late so i had no option but to join the software company and later left it & joined oil sector..how passionate i was to work into operations field, working on a big project, moving away from hometown (to work in the particular field of interest)...etc..

P2: What are your aspirations from this course..??

Me: told i have been part of the complete commissioning team, involved in complete production life cycle from planning, execution till production at my plant...learn about other verticals of operations and (other gyaan)....

P1: Why NITIE ??

Me: again prepared answer, nitie being pioneer in operations, imparting industrial management, aligning with my profile, mumbai location advantage, and advantage of not being a completely specialized course will help me to learn about other domains like Marketing, Finance, etc..

P1: Have u seen the course structure of PGDIM ?? I said YES..  asked me what all subjects are taught ???

Me: Told them all subjects common to first year & 2nd year being choosing of electives..

Overall, they seemed satisfied with my answers, were listening it carefully and nodding too..

Didn't ask anything about Project, academics, or Current affairs...

At the End, Mam (P2) told me:  Good i am impressed with your consistency in academics. and wished me All the Best !!! 😃

Verdict: Awaited.. Lets See How it turns out !!!! Fingers Crossed 😃

GD:- Topic- Eve Teasing ,Who is responsible.

It was more of a fish market. Most of time people deviated from the topic to what can be done to stop it rather than who is responsible.Shouted among themselves that we should not fight and take turns to talk.EPIC one

PI: 3 people

Mostly 1 person talked and another one pitched in once.Third one was always quiet.

Started with tell me about yourself.Interrupted at my work specifics.

I have 20 months work ex, so they talked about it, later on asked latest products from my company. They asked if CRM is used, i mentioned not CRM but we use BPM, so asked about it and asked if  i know the architecture.

Asked my projects in final year.I told compiler design so they asked some questions about language and very minute details.

Asked my favourite subject, i mentioned operating systems, then asked difference between their Android mobile OS and Windows OS.

Second person asked, being in So Good Company why i want to quit and study, wont it be a risk.I mentioned about Financial advantages and Complete Learning Package being in NITIE.Asked Little about opportunity cost.

What all calls i have.Mentioned couple of which i have

Gut feeling:- It was very brief.Eithey they were not much interested or i did do bad. 😃

PGDIM

GD:- Borderless world-A myth or a reality

Mostly a fish market. Everyone chipped in with 3-4 points and most of the time deviated from the topic of discussion. One good thing which i felt was we were able to conclude on the topic

PI: 4 persons

Started with the standard "Tell me something about yourself question" in which i mentioned about  my analytics projects. They got interested in it and remaining part of my interview revolved around my work-ex(Luckily!!!). Then they asked me how can i optimize the number of people assigned to a project on the basis of whatever i have learned so far. I said it will depend on project requirements and the length of experience a person has and on basis of performance rating a person has received, can be bucketed into good, avg or bad performer(so that if a project is important, i will assign a good performer to it and likewise. They asked me to think further about it, and as i was thinking, they said we are done....(Shocked!!!)

Overall Feeling-Didnt really like the way my PI ended...Lets hope for the best....

I was in the 11 am (LOL) slot. We were called for document verification at around 5 pm.

GD:

Topic: Should women get 50% of their husband's income in case of a divorce.

Number of Ppl present: 8

Time: 20 mins

It was one of the most civilized GDs you get to hear about. Starting from questioning a set 50% alimony and how custody of the child involved would matteer; to misuse of such a power in the hands of women and how clause for domestic violence is misused by women. I spoke 3rd. A different point I personally put in; that courts should assign counselling before trying any divorce case, as most genuine cases are the result of misunderstandings two mature people are completely capable of resolving with a little help.

We were asked to summarize in the last 2 minutes. Everybody was in consensus. It was a successful discussion.

PI for PGDIM & PGDISEM:

I went and sat outside the interview room after the GD. There was only one person before me. As the person before me went in, this other guy came and looked worried as he had a filght at 7.30 and it was already around 6. So, I let him go in before me. He came out smiling, so I was pretty sure the panel inside would be easy to handle. I couldn't be any more wrong.

There were 4 people. A lady in her early 30s say, L1 & 3 middle aged male professors say, M1, M2 and M3. M2 I think was the head of Operations.

Anyway, I went in all smiles. Wished L1, Good evening followed by the 3 Ms. M1 went out for a break as I was sitting while M3 asked me for my form. M2 asked me to sit down once I'd handed the form.

M2: So, Arnab! Tell us about yourself.

Me: Sir, I'm from Guwahati, Assam. I spent almost all my conscious life in Assam, schooling in Guwahati and graduation from NIT Silchar. The job being my first long term exposure outside NE. I am currently working as a Market Development Engineer in Alstom, but the chunk of my experience comes from Project Planning as a part of Project Management in the same co. Continued with how I aspire to climb rapidly be at the helm of some co. ASAP and so MBA is the next logical step.

M3: You have done a lot in Extra Curriculars. Can you elaborate a little more.

Me: Told them about representing school in quizzes and choirs. How I learnt guitar, got addicted to music and decided to coordinate the college's music festival. How the cultural shock during its promotion at GIR made me help pioneer the 1st AIESEC center the NE and how it was nationally appreciated.

M3: Why have you mentioned Green belt in Tae-Kwon-Do? Its a very basic belt.

Me: Sir, there was a limited space and I wanted to make it more diverse. I have also played football with a small time club in Guwahati, but that isn't certified.

M2: Ok, So, you are a quizzer. What is April 8th?

Me: (Mar Gaye!!) Sir, I haven't come across anything. (there's nothing, Phew!)

M2: Ok, then What's April 7th?

Me: Sir, I do not recall,

M2: Try, It was only yesterday.

Me: (batti jali) Sir, Health Day!!

(Everybody is laughing now, around 10 mins done, Interviews going great... dropped my guards... BIG MISTAKE!!)

M3: I have a Question. Why do all watches show a time of 10:10 in ads.

Me: Sir, I have read about two theories. One is that the inventor of watches died at 10:10 and it is offered as a sign of respect. The other more rational theory is that the watch looks symmetrical, looks like its smiling and at 10:10 the Brand logo is perfectly framed.

M3: Both your answers are wrong!! It was the time of the first assassination.

Me: Sir, I've read only these two. Now I have a 3rd theory. I still think my 2nd one is more logical.

(It is actually the 2nd one, the assassination theory is a emotional marketing stint linked with Lincoln, Kennedy or MLK Jr and quite a successful one judging from M3's reaction)

M3: Well, you're wrong!!

M2: Okay, you're from Mechanical Engineering, What is cutting speed.

Me: In respect of Material removal, its volume of material removed per minute.

M2: No, its not.

(Discussed this for 2/3mns. Never arrived at the correct answer)

M2: Okay, What's Reaming?

Me: It's used to machine the insides and enlarge an existing hole. (partially correct)

M2: Then what's Boring?

Me: Boring is also used to enlarge a hole.

(Meanwhile M1 has come from his break)

M2 to M1: He's saying reaming is for hole enlargement. (both laugh)

M2: What's the difference then?

Me: MRR?! (not really confident here)

M2: Which one is used when?

Me: I don't remember.

M2: You had Theory of Machines. What's Mechanical advantage.

Me: No idea, sir!

M2: What is your purpose of being a ME? All machining is to create Mechanical advantage. What is it?

Me: I really don't recall sir.

M1: Silchar is not that happening a place. Itni masti kaha ki? Padhai nahi karte the?

Me: Sir, it has been almost 3 years. Technical stuff can always be looked up. I have concentrated on personal development and my job requirements. (Failed attempt to change subject).

M3: Okay, Tell us about your project.

Me: We analysed Comb type Micro-capacitive Accelerometers and proposed a new design for detection of minute vibrations.

M2: Why did you do an electronics project being a mechanical engg.

Me: We were studying Non traditional manufacturing methods and accelerometers are one application.

M3: Okay, Explain. L1 is an Electronics Engineer.

Went to the blackboard and drew up the designs, explained why this small modification is more sensitive. How it could be used in seismographs and pre-quake tremors can be detected and other applications.

M2: Very well. (to other panel members), Let's ask about Work ex.

M3: What do you do.

Me: Explained.

M2: How come being single point coordinator of Bearing manufacturing be in any way be Project Planning. Its production planning.

Me: Explained how the roles were different.

M2: But bearings are a small item and mass produced. How come you call that Project.

Me: Sir, I handle Bearings for Hydro project which have humongous bearings, sometimes the size of this room. These are made to order. and apart from bearings i have worked in Hydro projects as well.

Further discussion on Bearing manufacture lead time, and responsibilities in new profile for 3-4mins.

Said thanks and left.

Total time : 35-40

Chances are slim. Maybe if percentile and GD have good weightages. God be merciful. 😛
