First one to post I guess. So here goes.

Interview date : 13/02/2015, Morning Slot (08:30 AM)

Centre : New Kenilworth, Kolkata

Xth: 94.6, XII: 91.33; CGPA: 9.29; QA 98.7, VA 99.7 OA 99.68

Work Ex: 19 months ; GEM

WAT Topic: Cultural policing is a necessary evil.

Duration: 15 min

Preparation : 3/5 , Performance 2.5/5

GD Topic: Same as WAT

GD Duration: 10 min

Started the GD with breaking down the topic into its keywords. Covered a lot of ground as a group

(They had announced in the beginning that WAT will be 15 Min followed by GD for 25 min. All of us were surprised in the GD when the professor asked us to stop midway.)

P1, P2: P1 was around 30-35. Male. Most likely an alum. P2 most probably a prof. Female. Smiling assassin. 😛 Around 40. Both belonged to Kolkata is what I figured from the interview.

P1 called me in.

P1: Got calls from all the IIMs?

Me: Yes. ABCLK.

P1: No I?

Me: No

P1: Why?

Me: I hadn't applied.

P2: So, which school did you study in? Where is it?

Me: Gave the name and location.

P2: The school is pretty new relatively. What do you think they strategically did right?

Me: Said I don't know what they are doing right now. But when they established used the brand name of the promoting group of the school to good effect. Enumerated the brands. About how they won an award for the best school in between. Also promoted the concept of no homework.

P2: But as a parent, isn't that something I would be worried about?

Me: Not really. The studying is restricted to the school. The child is free to pursue whatever he wishes to in his free time. Important for the child.

P2: And what about the background of the students who came in?

Me: Said that they were from the same community. Named the community

P2: So they catered to a particular segment. Why didn't your say that? It keeps you in a similar group. Lets you focus on your academics and be comfortable.

Me: Countered saying it is not a good thing. How as a child i was not very outgoing. Never gave me the opportunity to know more about the place I am in. So it held me back. How if anyone in college would ask about Bengali culture I would just tell them about luchi, bhaja and maachh.

P1: Laughter> Says even that is not a good combination.

Me to P2: That is what I am talking about.

P2: But then we don't need rocket scientists in our college who can solve differential equations.

Me: That is where my college comes in. It was a place where I opened up as a person. Helped me a lot.

P2: But even your college is near your native. So it is still the same thing.

Me: Yes, that is the case. However, the college is a premier institute of the country that takes in people only based on merit. So there was representation from everywhere. Helped grow more confident and open minded. Willing to listen.

P1: You've been to Howrah bridge?

Me: Paused> Yes.

P1: That too you have to think and tell! It's ok. Tell me what kind of bridge is it.

Me: Sir, i am not very sure. Cantilever or Suspension.

P1: No. Pick one

Me: Suspension.

P1: Why?

Me: Gave justification.

P1: Can't it be both?

Me: Said no. Explained the different load carrying mechanisms.

P1: Ok. Draw it on paper. Explain both the types.

Me: Did that.

P2: Gave a load diagram to solve.

Me: Took my time. Did it. Was actually a sitter. Would have come across as a moron for taking this long.>

P2: Draw a truss diagram and solve.

Me: Drew. Goofed up big time. Took an angle as 45 deg. Yet took l as the length for all three sides. Which I realised only after they pointed it out! :/

P1: Why are you tensed? Don't be!

P2: Did you study engineering just for the sake of the exams?

Me: Most definitely not ma'am.

P2: Asked about the definition of culture.

Me: Is a way of life that certain people believe in and follow. It has evolved over time and continues to evolve.

P2: What about the place? Does it not make a difference?

Me: For the time being no. If i were to move to a different place but follow my own culture then it doesn't. However, based on the environment, changes will seep in.

P2: So basically, getting into the comfort zone.

Me: And finally blurted out a yes for god knows what joy!

P2 to P1: This is what I am trying to say!

P2: What business news do you follow?

Me: Sahara group. Black money which has both political and business implications.

P2: Explain

Me: Money comes back into the system. Reinforces belief in the system. Contribute towards the development of the country. If as a business owner, I have paid my taxes then taken the money it is fine. If not, I am liable to be persecuted. Corrected myself saying prosecuted. 😛

P2: You have all calls. Which would you take?

Me: Would be a welcome problem to be in. Haven't thought about it. Will cross the bridge when I come to it.

P2: Any questions you have for us?

Me:  Yes. Asked about Howrah bridge.

P1: That you should find out.

Me: Also, one more question with your permission of course.

P1: Yeah tell me..

Me: Why is luchi, bhaja and maachh not a good combination?

P1: Have you ever seen it being sold? I said no. It goes well with aloor dum and not maachh.

Me: Ok Sir. Thank You very much. Good to know!

WAT was average. Ran out of time. GD was pretty good from my end.

Interview: Horribly underprepared for technical. It showed I guess. Screwed up the business news part. P2 totally lost interest. 😐 Just don't know what she made of my arguments for the culture and open mindedness bit!

Hoping for the best! 😛

Cheers!

Interview date : 15 feb 1.30 PM, DELHI (Janpath Hotel)

Xth: 87.6 XIIth: 83.6 CAT: 94.13

First you need to get your documents verified, so I suggest you guys to reach at least 30 mins before time as they were taking their time to check the documents. And don't forget your extra curricular certificates because they will check each and every certificate.

After that we were divided into 4 batches with 10 candidates in each batch.

In my batch there was only one panellist (male in mid 30's) during WAT/GD. In other batches there were two.

WAT/GD Topic: 'knowledge without character is dangerous'.

He gave us 15 mins for WAT and then immediately asked us to start GD (after collecting the paper sheets).

Everyone got chance to speak in GD. It was going smoothly but then suddenly he asked us to stop after 14-15 mins.

Then people who didn't get their documents verified were sent back to get their documents verified.

During interview (Batch 4) there was 2 panellist. They called us in according to our no during GD/WAT.

INTERVIEW

P1: where are you from? at what time you left from your home? how did you reach here? what time did you reach here? and few other random ques.

P1: tell me about your job and your responsibilities.

Me: sir, I am working for MSIL in 'seats and seat belts' department from July 2013.

Before I could have said anything P2 stopped me and said your company has put in so much resources to develop you and now you want to leave. Why?

Again before I could have uttered a single word, P1 start asking about seats and seat belts, design and development process, how do we design, what factors do we consider. about the recent NCAP failures, why our cars are substandard to exported ones etc.

For every ans I gave, they cross questioned me. They kept doing this for next 10-12 mins. All this time I kept smiling and gave ans.

Then suddenly P1 asked me "Who won Noble Peace Prize?"

I gave them both the names.

Then again P2 asked me about my job and same thing went for next 5-6 mins.

Then P1 asked me about gears.

I tried to explain as much as I could with the examples of automobile gears.

And that was it.

No 'Why MBA', no 'strength or weakness', no 'acad' except gears and no 'economy'.

It was just my job experience and I kept them interested by putting in few technical terms every time I spoke.

So that's how it went for me.

Now its wait and watch for me.

Wish you guys luck.

IIM K Interview experience: 12th feb 8:30 AM

Place: Janpath Hotel, New Delhi

WAT/GD: work smarter not just harder.(Last in the panel)

WAT was good and covered plenty of points and scope where smart work done has been productive whether in the politics(BJP campaign), economics(China's strategy), Tech (India's IT industry and computer technology), social and gave the e.g. of judicial system which today requires smart work to clear out so many pending cases.

GD: I opened the GD. Introduced what is smart work and why it is important. Gave e.g. of BJP's election campaign. Pitched in 3-4 times.

Fair enough GD/WAT.

Interview: ( Being last in the panel sucks!!)

There were two panelists: One male Ass. Prof (A) and one female prof (B).

A: So you are from IIT-BHU. Life in IIT is good. You must be frequently visiting the ghats in Benares, crossing the Ganges, taking Ganja on the other side.

(I just laughed, couldn't control :P)

Me: No Sir. There is more to enjoy in life and also to do in an IIT then taking Ganja (smiled). Yes I visited ghats frequently. Sitting on the ghats in the evening and the cold breeze flowing over the Ganges, you will feel like heaven. You are totally relaxed..

A: Yes. Okay. So you have graduated in Pharmaceutics. My friend tells me that medicine field can never die. I am not satisfied with this statement. Satisfy me. (B was reading my form during the time)

Me: Sir, your friend is correct. As long as humanity is there, people will get sick and they will need medicines to be cured. If we go through the status quo, the microbes are getting more and more resistant like the case of TB. Moreover, new diseases are precipitating. So, this will continue in the future too.

A: Okay. Then consider the case that as medicinal science is getting more advanced and sophisticated and it invents a pill by which I will get immortal, then your pharma industry would die.

Me: No Sir. Even then diseases would be there so one would need medicines. Also, there are neutraceuticals which one would require at any point in his life. So, the industry would continue.

B: That is a very good point you mentioned about neutraceuticals. Now if neutraceuticals are available in the market, then why don't I take only the pills and do not eat any food.

Me: ma'm, it is always better to be as natural as possible for the nutrients as even if neutraceuticals are there, they have many side-effects like iron tablets and folic acid tablets which are given in pregnancy.

A: we know that everything is molecular in nature. So, the food that we are eating, provides us the nutrients because of the molecules present in it. So why there are side-effects in the case of neutrceuticals?

Me; (I was stumped really...I don't have any answer for that...even searched google and asked people...no one know...research is still going on) I just replied that sir natural products are natural. Then I replied sir, I don't have any answer for that.

A: Okay. Aayush explain your role in the company?

Me: Explained.

A: Then you left your job.

Me: yes sir and told the reason.

A: okay. What is the difference between share and stock?

Me: Sir, there is a very minute difference otherwise they refer to the same thing.

A: Are you sure?

Me: yes sir, I read it on google somewhere. (It was written on investopedia actually. Stock when single is called a share and now-a-days they are used interchangeably.)

(Handed over to B.)

B: Can you explain your work-ex role one more time?

Me: Explained.

B: okay. So the clients deal in the health insurance business in US. Do you know HIPAA act? Have you heard of it?

Me: (This part I regret the most. I knew HIPAA but couldn't recollect that time, I should have known this as this was imp).

Yes ma'm, it is an act related to health insurance only. I am not remembering right now, sorry. There are some certification courses also done for the health insurance experts in US but I didn't do it.

B: There is a business plan that you were working on and presented. Can you explain what was it all about?

Me: Explained everything and they were just looking at me. I told that we 4 people (2 from IIT-BHU and other two from IIT-K) started working on it as we got much appreciation from the VCs which were present there and they told to modify it more. We did big research on that part. I did surveys, contacted doctors for that and told them about the results that I got from the research.

(Both were just looking at me, listening and smiling ).

B: Do you find this practically feasible?

Me: Yes ma'm. It will be in some time from now. Even big private hospitals like Fortis and Max are using electronic medical records at one of their branches. All this is at a very nascent stage in India. In US, the whole system is computerized and their healthcare sector is very robust.

B: Where are you facing the problems?

Me: Ma'm mainly the healthcare infrastructure of India is not robust. If we see the conditions at the public hospitals, it is difficult to put such an infrastructure in place but it is possible. Private hospitals can do it as they generate profits and their aim is to provide better services. Cost is not an issue.

B: Do you need help from the government? What steps you suggest need to be taken by the government to boost healthcare infra?

Me: Yes ma'm, I will require govn's help because the infra at govn hospitals is not proper. Healthcare funding in India is very less and need to be increased.

(Could have answered this ques better by adding more points.)

B: You mentioned one thing about the judicial system in GD. What are your views on that?

Me: Yes ma'm, I wanted to put across the fact that in the recent times if we see, there are some landmark decisions that were given by the Supreme court in various cases like coalgate, 2G, etc. But if we go through the data, there are huge number of cases that are still pending in courts for years. Judiciary is working hard but it needs some smarter ways to expedite the process and it is the need of the hour of Indian judicial system.

B: So it was general point then, what should they do?

Me: Ma'm like filing petitions online, making their various processes to go online and the system is trying to do the same.

B: Okay. Okay Thank You. Sir, if you have any questions.

A: No. Thank You (both smiling)

Me: Thank You Sir, Ma'm and left the room.

It would have been better if I would have answered HIPAA and govn wala ans. This was my experience with K.

Guys, for work ex certificate, will first and last pay-slip would suffice ?

or we have to bring pay-slip of the all the months claimed?

Results announcement date please ?
