Need some serious help from seniors.( its a bit of a long post am sorry pls bear with me!!)
I have heard that life at any of the top B schools will be hectic and that on most days ppl can only get 4 to 5 hours of sleep! Is every B-school so hectic? i asked some people currently studying in IIT-M IIT-D and LIBA and i found that these institutes are not so hectic and people told me that it is possible to get a decent amount of sleep.
The reason am hankering around sleep time so much is cos i have certain health conditions which necessitate 6 to 7 hrs of sleep on average.of course some days i can strtech ( prob before exams, before a project deadline etc) but if the average sleep time is going to be say 1 to 4 or 2 to 6 AM then i have a problem!
This health condition of mine has been with me for many years now and i dont see a possible cure and its more of a life style issue and sleep is an important aspect for my condition. But at the same time i am interested in pursuing my MBA dreams and i have prepared for and written CAT!
Therefore what i am looking for is a decent institute( no point in graduating from some random B-school just cos the stress levels are low)where the stress levels are low, and by that i mean on average my sleep timing should be 11:30 to 6:30 or 12 to 7 essentially 6 to 7 hours!
Some people are saying even in very good institutes like SP JAIN, IMT-GHAZIABADH it is possible to have 7 hours of sleep if you are willing to compromise on most of the co-curricular activities like placement cell etc. Also i am not too hell bent on placements cos i am part of a family owned business and i plan on re-joining there after my MBA! However that is my outlook now and it may change later on in the course of my MBA and hence placements must be good in the institute that i am to go to only that i would not give it number one priority.
For me it is about having both these things: A decent institute and having 6 to 7 hrs sleep!!
So id like to know which institutes i can apply to and please give your well considered oponion cos ill be giving maximum weightage to this!! Thank you for your patience for reading this long post! And please help me!
@Anivesh90 Better responses can be obtained at www.pagalguy.com/forums/career...Anyways, my 2 cents on this. Depends on what you're looking for. If you're not interested in core sector and its a desk job you want then IT/coding, if you have particular interest in Civil Engg. and looking for some work with movement/travel etc. involved, then core job.Again looking at it from future perspective of doing MBA, then you can think of being part of a BIG/MAJORITY crowd of IT employees or STAND OUT with an experience in core sector.
Thank you very much Sir..I too had the same thoughts. sir one more query: My profile is X-77(ICSE) XII-79.7(ISC) B.tech-62.2(Till 6th sem) Sir I am currently studying in a very crappy local college..do i stand a chance of converting calls from any top school (If I do get any)? or is it just fruitless to do any hardwork..?
@fifi I guess this will answer all your queries - http://www.pagalguy.com/forums/cat-and-related-bschools/ximb-2012-14-admission-related-queries-t-71038/p-2886307/r-3224709 :)
@Anivesh90 The institute doesn't matter. The university and the scores you have matters. And FYI, for your own sake don't use such bad language about your alma mater in any of the B-school interviews or anywhere else. Even if someone asks, which institute "Its the best!" 😃 The reason being nowadays where you do your graduation from hardly matters (except of course if its from the likes of IIT etc.).
So you can very well expect calls from some top 40 institutes in the country provided you have decent CAT scores.
@pr88 Agreed its going to be hectic. But then that is because most of the people are engineers, and engineers have this habit of keeping everything till last moment and build the pressure!! They somehow can't survive without the pressure factor!! :mg:
Anyways, if you're systematic, diligent and consistent in your work you can very well afford 6-7 hours of sleep except for those odd days near exams, for some submissions etc. when you'll have to sit up bit late till around 1-2AM. I know people who have passed MBA in flying colors with decent placements with a habit of sleeping at 12 at night and waking up at around 6-7AM in the morning. So its all up to you, how you manage your available time (time when you're awake). In my opinion, you'll also get time for other things, I mean extra-curricular etc. Again the mantra will be TIME MANAGEMENT.

sir i obviously wont say this in an interview.. I would definitely praise my college..
Dost I would suggest that all of you should read AIWTSAC thread @ PG. If you are lacking confidence read the thread & you'll find people just like you & me who have converted IIMs, FMS, XLRI, NITIE, IIFT, SPJIMR, SIBM, SCMHRD etc calls. Here is the link:www.pagalguy.com/forums/cat-an...Also read:www.pagalguy.com/forums/cat-an...
Sir i am already a fan of the aiwtsac thread..Still sometimes i feels its useless to work hard..
I didn't expect much from CAT last year and managed 92%ile. But sadly I was already thinking of a gap year and didn't apply to many colleges and missed out on a few good ones :(
This time again, Quant really sucked for me and it feels like back to square one! Last season was getting 70%iles in TIME Mocks so didn't expect much. This year managed 90+ 4-5 times and 80+ in all other mocks, so was really confident of getting a decent %ile, but sadly, wasn't to be!
I attempted around 13-14 in Quant and expecting only 7-8 to be correct, not more.
I am good with Verbal, attempted 27 and hoping around 20 to be correct.
What %ile can I expect? I have surely fucked sectional cutoffs, but any chance in colleges which look for overall %ile?
@Anivesh90 Yep I know. But then you never know who might be reading these posts here (although you're anonymous here with different PG ID's)!!! I know of a case, just last year, where someone was questioned and was caught lying!! If you/me are well known bluffmasters some of them in the interview panel are well known bluffcatchers!! :D
@Anivesh90 Buddy....As a CAT aspirant working hard is the numero uno quality you are expected to posses. You have highlighted that you are a fan of AIWTSAC thread then I am pretty sure it would have given you an insight about how much people have persevered to land up in their dream b-schools. Fighting among lakhs of candidates to secure one coveted seat demands and expects hard work, sincerity and dedication. Don't be daunted by the facts and figures and the stories of failures, not everyone succeed in their first attempt. Failures are part of life and sometimes one does not taste the flavor of success. Giving up is easy, it is going on against the advent of failures which test your character and this is not limited to an exam but through out your various facets of life. Fight your way brother, do not pray for an easy life but pray for the strength to endure a difficult one. All the best :)

I am expecting arnd 80 perc dis tym....bt in a dilemma to choose b/t NIRMA and LBSIM??any expert puys or guys wid sum exp. help me decide....which collg to apply??
@livchamps Dude mind your language! This is a public forum, and according to the rules of this forum your ID may get suspended!!
Based on your attempts and accuracy you can expect a %tile of 80+ (approx.). You can consider applying to UBS, LBSIM, FORE-IB, NIRMA and after CAT results look out for TAPMI, XIME etc.
@raku122 If someone says X institute is good, what guarantee is there that it will be good for you?! So, where to apply is something you'll have to decide for yourself by asking for FACTS from seniors at both institutes and then deciding for yourself based on your conditions, criteria & what you are looking for by doing an MBA. After all you're going to spend the money. Not the person guiding you.
