Imagine yourself to be a hockey player.
Would you prefer scoring a field goal or a goal through a penalty corner?
Scoring a field goal after covering a lot of ground, passing to two teammates & tackling three defenders on the way, and then striking from an uncertain obtuse angle would be more fulfilling than the mechanical predictability of taking a penalty corner shot. Most people would opt for a field goal in this imaginary situation. Such a goal will give them more satisfaction.
If you are a so called thorough bred professional, you may opt for the more predictable percentage play of the penalty corner. For instance, simply earn a penalty corner by deliberately hitting the player from the opposite team in the foot in the penalty area, and have a go at the opposition goal.
The end result of both field play and penalty corner is same. A goal may or may not be scored.
From the standpoint of spectators every field goal includes a unique maneuver and is therefore a joy to behold. A lot of ground is covered by the involved players displaying skills of dribbling and passing before a move may result into a goal.
Penalty corners work on the statistical percentage success rate of the striker and present a well defined sequence of predictable actions.
Since the spectators want to see their team win, they would not mind as long as goals are scored whether through field play or penalty corners. If success rate in penalty corners is higher they may adore players who are penalty corner specialists. In the ultimate analysis though everybody likes field goals since therein lies the beauty of the game.
Would the spectators enjoy watching or players playing a game where both teams take turns at penalty corners at the opposition goal for the entire duration of the match? The answer is certainly a big no.
Now, imagine your life to be a game of hockey with your relatives, friends and acquaintances (society) as the spectators.
Increasingly, at every stage of our lives (our game of hockey) we make choices that convert living into a series of penalty corners. It would appear that we are forgetting the art of dribbling, passing and attacks & defense from various positions and flanks, the essential elements of a game of hockey the field play.
Consider parents seeking their childs admission to a school.
We tinker with the babys learning process by teaching and burdening it with programmed learning like counting, learning of two languages (the one spoken at home and English) and other behavioral aspects. The sole aim is to earn a penalty corner (short listing / interview call by the school) and thereby score a goal of admission in that school (The goal makes the child ultimately victorious or not is another matter).
Consider what students do at the school
The entire process of school education is working towards students attaining good marks in the board examinations. The emphasis is not on quality education and thorough permanent understanding of the subject (field play) but to be able to solve the type of questions expected in the board papers with stereotyped precision (taking penalty corners). Thus, less time is spent on teaching and more attention is paid to frequent tests.
Remember, both field play and penalty corners have a capacity to produce a goal but excelling in field play will make one a more satisfied and skilled player. Even if penalty corners are not awarded such a player can produce a goal but a penalty corner specialist without the basic skills of field play cannot score one. So, wherever marks obtained is the criteria, programmed learners stand a better chance, but are they going to be happy and contended in the game called life?
Consider the syndrome of entrance tests for colleges and schools
The basic purpose of conducting entrance tests is to pass the candidates through a filter to select those having basic aptitude for that course. However, penalty corner coaches (coaching centers) train out candidates by hundreds, irrespective of the fact whether those candidates have the aptitude (field play skills) or not. They are simply trained to handle the type of questions that are normally asked in such tests (penalty corners). Thus those not deserving to be selected by virtue of their lack of aptitude may find a place at the cost of a deserving candidate. The entrance tests, due to this reason, may end up selecting penalty corner specialists rather than players having actual skills.
Consider how we make choice of a career.
Though their interests may lie elsewhere, most youngsters aspire to become an engineer, a doctor or a Chartered Accountant. Again the preparation is to get through into an institution awarding these degrees (getting a penalty corners) and ultimately landing a job with a multinational or public sector to score a goal. They could well have opted for field play spending time in the chosen field of their interest and aptitude (ball handling skills, dribbling) and matured their skills (passing the ball and covering ground) to achieve success.
Those having a natural flair for interior design, painting, fashion, sports, photography, languages, music, theology or other vocations could hone their skills to become an AR Rehman or a Satyajit Ray or a Vishwanathan Anand.
Instead, increasingly, we have larger number of examples of a mechanical engineer writing software programs and an MBBS becoming an IAS.
Having specialized in earning penalty corners from very early stages of their lives, such individuals are then conditioned to live life as a penalty corner specialist. They (their game of hockey) then play only to earn penalty corners throughout their lives because that is the only area of the game they excel in and find convenient.
The adventure and joy of field play and emerging victorious through scoring field goals is not their cup of tea.

IIMs is better known for the managerial skills which it injects into its students. Music is the last thing on the minds of students studying at IIMs thanks to a rigorous curicullum they go through. There are bunch of 17 students at IIM Lucknow who have formed a band named 3.4 to pursue their interest in music.
3.4, pretty odd name for a music band but there is a logical story behind it. Travelling along Sitapur Road, one needs to take a by-road to reach the main gate of IIM Lucknow, a distance of 3.4 kms. The music band had been conceptualised while trudging along this stretch, and hence the name "3.4".
The name itself probably speaks volumes of the eclectic nature of IIM Lucknow's music band, "3.4".
3.4 can easily find a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, for boasting of a strength of 17 members! Originally conceptualised for performing rock music, 3.4 today has diversified its offerings, performing even Indian numbers with great panache. What's more, the band has, till date, five original compositions to its credit, each of them a perfect fusion of the Occident and the Orient. A few of the band's members have had formal training in Indian classical music, with one of them being the son of noted classical music exponent T.N. Seshagopalan. The band is contemplating on cutting its very own album this year, which should not be much of an issue with the band's music stalwarts!
How difficult it is for the members of the band to organise and co-ordinate music sessions?
Abhishek one of th members of the band says " Since the number of members in the band is very large (17) and each member has a different interest and taste of music, we have divided the entire band into two groups one that play the western music and the other play the eastern.
12 members play Eastern music, 3 play the Western music while two are common. But managing such a big band is not everyone's cup of tea and 3.4 band members are using every bit of managing skills they are learning at prestigious college.
Music has been known to cut across cultures, and one does not need to look beyond 3.4 to gauge this fact. The band has members from all parts of India, and its practice sessions are more fun than work, because of the inherent love for music each member has. A typical practice session starts off post-dinner at around 10, carrying on till around 2-3 in the morning, with band members playing pranks on each other, helping each other iron out rough edges, and egging on each other's performances. All this, with dollops of laughter thrown in. With the formidable pressure of studies in this premier institute, music not only unites these students, but also acts as a great stress buster. Not to mention, these very students go on to grab the best job offers on campus!
In the past year, 3.4 has put up shows on the welcome night for freshers, "Parichay", on the foundation day of IIM Lucknow, on the solemn occasion of the Independence Day, on the inaugural night of intra-IIM Lucknow's cultural fest, "Tansen", and, most recently, on the occasion of IIM Lucknow's annual management festival, 'Manfest'. Members of the band have also hosted Antakshari competitions in and off-campus, the most notable one being during INDEX, the annual one-of-its-kind marketing fair organised by IIM Lucknow, held at the Moti Mahal lawns in Hazratgunj during November last year.
Students of IIM Lucknow are, without an iota of doubt, among the sharpest brains of the country. When you talk to the members of 3.4, you also realise that they are equally adept at striking the right chord in your heart with their passion for music.
The band comprises: Arnab, Ashok, Avishek, Uma, Praveena, Manasi, Ramki, Sudeep, Krishna, Varoon (vocalists), Vijay (vocalist-cum-guitarist), Srimurugan, Clement (guitarists), Khrunio, David, Pradeep (percussionists) and last but certainly not the least, Anand (keyboard).
