know dat PG is one for CAT/GMAT et all but i wanna ask u guys that is there one whoz also planning to give GRE n TOEFL for US colleges or is it just me...i have decided that if im nt able to crack the CAT then i wud swtich back to computers and i wud then apply for my MS(Comp Sci) in US for the Fall intake...
so is there anyone else here giving gre???
i gave my GRE a month back. scored a 1460 ( 800 q and 660 v) .

i am not too keen on higher tech studies but should keep options open...maybe with a schol or someting. i would prob just go for it.

Post CAT ! Yes ! But No apping and stuffs...Just for the sake of mugging up the WL...Which I wouldn't do otherwise, I am sure !
That applies if I don't get any calls this time..
ping srijit (the d00d from IIMA who posts only on the quizzophile thread)....He scored a 1600/1600 on the GRE and a 6.0 on the AWA my belief is there are lots of ppl on the forum who take up the GRE too...dont ask me why.... 😉
Cheers

took gre in june 2003 got verbl-710,quant-570,total-1280.
not applying this year.
my 2 cents on gre:-
CHUCK BARRONS OUT!!!!!
yeah u heard it right.barrons!! thats right, just chuck it if u want anything close 2 srijits score. otherwise u will screw up like i did.
my suggestion for vocab:- a good dictionary like websters or oxford and nothing more.
for quants:-mr. aggarwals piece of work is more than enough.
just remember BAN BARRONS
ARUN
aw cmon...u are being overly critical of BARRONS.
its not that bad....infact its the most widely used book for GRE....its not perfect and one shouldnt learn Barrons alone. ..one should have other options available too....KAPLAN ....PRINCETON REVIEW....PETERSONS...all are decent.
Hi,
Saw this thread. I'm in the middle (or rather close to the end) of grad school apps and thought i ought 2 reply.
1600 is not all that uncommon among Indians - and among IITians it is even more common. As 4 an 800 in quant - 220 out of arnd 800 applicants for columbia's Eco pgm had that last year!!!
I did hardly any prep for verbal - no word lists 4 me. I booked the GRe and just plain sat on the prep material i'd bought bcoz i just couldn't get around to it! Finally started prep about a week b4 the test and found that the wordlist was too big to mug. And most of the words in the ETS sample test were dicey even if u mug the wordlist (at least that is what i was told). So i just had a week's vacation. Did manage a couple of tests and brushed up on quant. Took the ETS 2nd sample test the day b4 the GRE and ended up with 1520 (of course with an 800 in quant - after all i'm indian )
The big day i found the quant almost at CAT level - not many sitters. But verbal was just like normal. Loved the essays - good topics both.
Got an 800 in quant (i'm bloody sure i couldn't possibly have got all of 'em right - but that shows an 800 is possible even without 100% accuracy) and a 740 in verbal. When the Analytical Writing score arrived i was i 4 a bit of a shock though. Got a 4.5/6 and a measly 52% for what i considered pretty good essays. I thought a 5.0 was def in the bag. Found from some grad app forms that this is not all that uncommon. AW seems to be everybody's bugbear. A lot of people have had trouble with it. Hopefully that shouldn't hurt ur app.
If u ask me 4 advice, i'd say if u r preparing 4 CAT, don't even bother with prep 4 GRE if ur VA is pretty ok.
Now any more Eco Ph.D applicants here?

Great going Ravi...
I gave GRE this september, though I didn't actually prepare for it. I was to give the CAT but felt like doing something useful in the meantime, so i gave the GRE.
Score: 1530/1600
Verbal 730
Quant 800
AWA 6.0 / 6.0
TOEFL : 300/300
GRE's quite simple man, esp. if you've worked for CAT. You need 2 % luck for the verbal section (usually, coz it's quite possible to come across a word you've never seen, eg. dock = reduce (other than the usual meaning of 'dock')) but quant is definitely a cakewalk.
Advice: do only powerprep's two tests, they give fairly accurate predictions of your scores. Kaplan might be useful. Dunno if coaching helps, coz i never took any. But it may help u, so consider your case independently. I found errors in the princeton tests. U cud try Cambridge for TOEFL, though i'd still suggest only the powerprep cd.
Lemme know if you need to know anything... i'd be glad to help anyone regarding this matter.
... Hanoz.
Hi,
I'm planning to give GRE this year. Could you pls suggest some good coaching centres (in chennai) or books?
Hey Rami,
Datamatics in chennai is quite good for GRE...Prof.Donald James who handles the verbal sessions is one great tutor who u can look for....I attended his classes abt 3 years ago....his command over english is simply amazing .... he is a born teacher...do check if he still teaches there....We had good tutors for Quants as well..though was not quite happy with Analytical then..i guess this section is not a part of exam now....not sure abt other institutes ...
All the Best!
Vinoth
Thanks vinoth !
