Very true. The issue starts, when everything becomes a checklist point!
Wish there were many thought *leaders* :)
@Avanika Hmm *luxury* to do things we aspire to ? I am not discussing it. But just contemplate and see if that is the cause or an alibi π
Can we get back to the topic, guys?
Dude! Seriously?
Tell me what's wrong in working for an NGO in the hope of getting something in return?
I'm not asking anything for free. I'm giving my time and energy to this. What's wrong if I desire a little recognition in return?
Why not look at it this way; the people whom I'm working for are also gaining in the process.
If every MBA aspirant today decides to do some social service, even if in the hope of getting something in return, the people whom they'll be working for do not stand to lose anything anyways.
Not ranting here but if you start working in an NGO 1year BEFORE you apply, every ad-com is going to know you did it just to tick-off a box. If for the past 3years you didn't do anything and you got invovled, "coincidentally" 1year before applying, then you didnt do it for the right reasons.
Understand this-- it is very hard to walk into an NGO and start at middle-management. You will likely spend a fair amount of time doing grass-roots level work. And there might not be much to write home about.
I always tell applicants-- Don't do NGO work just to score brownie points. You will be found out. Do it to make a real change.

Well, I'm being involved in implementing a new project for an NGO. It's a completely new concept for them and that's why I smell the opportunity to make a mark there.
It's a new project and I'll be the sole guy working on it. And guess what there are actually two such projects with different objectives and awaiting a start.
If I'm able to successfully achieve what that NGO wants from me, I think it'll be a great achievement in terms of making an impact on their organisation.
The 'impact potential' is good. Hence, I see no harm in getting into it.
As far as the 'one year before app' thing is concerned, you do have a point but tell me, if I'm able to make a significant impact on the organisation by means of getting two of their projects to take-off, does it not matter?
I'm not getting into 'teaching the kids' kinda stuff here. That, I agree, will not make any impact whatsoever on my B-School app.
Regards.
@Neo2000 : Thanks for your reply. As a last post on this discussion , I would like to quote something that I have seen in my life. I have been involved in such activities all my life(for say like 15 years) and in fact I am also managing a group that works with children for the past 4 years. Through years all the projects that we did, made us realize the impact such events create on the emotional well being of the kid. Many of us who has the luxury of having *parents*, wouldn't really understand how it is to be with 100's of children under one roof and await eagerly for few souls who would come for them and not for anything else.Sometimes, the amount of disappointment and grief among the children gets multi-folded because of the momentary glimpse that you have made in their life in the name of CV value. Having said that, I emphasize again that I don't preach altruism. It is not a compulsion. For that matter anything that is forced into your being cannot be full filled (JK ? Osho ? I guess). There is nothing more blissful than doing things that you are actually passionate about. Anyways just another idealist who still believes in the indomitable human spirit.May be you can ignore this !
Good Luck everyone! π
karthikkamalb Says@sahniprashant π Yes we should! Good luck with your admissions !
Thank you very much. π
Hi everyone..
Am planning to apply for ISB.. and regarding the references.. is it ok if i provide my client side manager as my reference. I am working with him since 3 years now and he will be the best person to judge my skills.
and one of my immediate manager whom I worked for more than 2 years moved to a higher position recently i.e., 6 months back and am no more reporting to him. My new reporting manager cannot evaluate better than my old manager.. is it ok if I get reference from him..
and i have one more choice..I can get a reference from one of the senior guy of the organization ( he reports to one level below the board of the organization).. i was in his team since my induction (five years) and he knows me and he is ready to refer me.. but i never directly reported to him.. will it be ok..
Please suggest..!!
Thanks in Advance..!

nithinankam SaysGuys help me out please...
I'd go for the GMAT once more if I were you.
You could wait one more year gaining work-ex and consolidating your profile (work in NGO etc.)
From what I've read on the internet, it pays to be around 720 when aiming for a top B-School.
P.S. You did not state the B-schools you're targeting.
Regards.

I'd go with the client side manager and your earlier boss. At the outset in their recos if they can convincingly explain who they are and why they are qualified to vouch for you, you are in good shape.
Both can talk about you from diverse perspectives (from the org side as well as the client side). So Adcoms can get a balanced view of your profile.

Sirji, on an 'Ask a consultant' thread, you are asking an admissions consultant to recommend other consultants :-)
Food for thought or maybe a survey question: (in Sallu-bhai's 'american hindi' accent) Kitne pratishat bhaartiya click on the signature below to read more about the background of the noble souls answering the questions out here?

MBA Admissions Consultants..(ahem, adding as an after-thought)

So coming back to my original question - do you give professional help in essays and interview? If yes, then what's the way to take this to a more personal level and talk about fees etc.
lookatami SaysConsultants -- Could you please respond to my query.
Not sure if it's just a sense of deja vu or I'm getting old (or both). Have I responded to your note on another website?

PG rules do not allow anyone to sell their wares (yup, including Tendulkar's signed bat) or have external promotional links on the discussion forums. More than happy to discuss sarvajanik samasyaein out here, but can't discuss services, pricing et al.
Currently there are two consulting teams fielding questions on this thread: MBA Crystal Ball and Crackverbal.
On the first page of this thread, in the introductory posts for each team, you'll find details (background, website links). You can read up more about what each team does and then take a call.
Revised survey question: (in Sallu-bhai's ever popular accent) Kitne pratishat bhaartiya click on the signatures and the links on the intro posts?

Hi,
I will be 32 years old at the time of my application for MBA program. Is this too old to get into top B-schools? And yes i've heard the 'it's never too late' bit. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
You are too old for Harvard and Stanford. Wharton, Booth, Haas, Kellog are still achieveable, but you must move quickly. I would say late 30s would be too late for full-time MBA in USA. Early 30s is still doable.
You can also try for schools like IMD and INSEAD which like high work experience 10 years work experience. You may be a better fit there. Harvard and Stanford are DEFINITELY OUT. Don't waste your time and money in applying.
Note: I MA NOT A CONSULTANT.
