Hi

Just discovered this amazing thread on PG. I dont know how I missed it till now !

This is one issue i have been searching help for since a long time. Hope someone helps me here.

I have just completed my 1st year MBA from IIT Kanpur. I joined this program straight out of my college(Btech).

My main area of interest is Consulting and then finance. I think the kind of profiles that are offered to freshers after MBA are not that great. They are either back end jobs or the exciting jobs are given to just IIM top rankers.

I am thinking of doing a second MBA from one of the B schools in US or Europe.

Can someone please guide me on how to go about building a strong profile for a second MBA.
Which all B schools in US are open for applicants like me. Moreover, what is the average workex that Second MBA applicants should have so as to be a competitive candidate.

I am planning to work for 3-4 years in consulting industry(IT or any other field)/ Business Analyst and then go for another MBA to get a global exposure and more opportunities.

One more thing, if i work in an IT company as BA or consultant, would I be considered a part of the most competitive IIM (Indian IT male) pool of applicants ?

It would be really helpful if experienced people in this area of applications can help me out.

Suggestions for profile building would be a great help.

Thanks

I am not sure if this is the right thread for my query, but it would be great if you could help me. I have been accepted for a one-year masters course at LSE. I am slightly confused about the Visa process. Could you throw some light on how I can go about applying for a UK Visa? I am given to understand that I should be applying for a Tier-4 students visa (I don't quite get the sponsorship bit). Do correct me if I am wrong. Thankyou.

P.S. - It would be great if you could walk me through the entire process. How to get the form and how long does it usually take to get the visa?

Hi,

I have got an admin from Imperial College Business School, London. I've heard its a good school esp for Tech management.

What am not sure is about the visa changes in UK. Now we wont get a 2 yea work permit after completing the MBA. Is that correct? Is the industry supportive of the non UK/non EU students by sponsoring Visa's? and any info specific to Imperial would be much appreciated.

My brief profile:
Total - 4years work ex
incl around 6 month US
IT/Indian

Thanks

Hii
I am preparing to write GMAT this July, I will have 4 yrs work ex by October.
:
How much GMAT score should I target for getting into Top 20 B-schools in US/Canada/Europe.

Here's a general rule of thumb you can follow:

700+ : Good
730+ : Better
750+ : Best
800+ : Are you sure you took the GMAT...and not the GRE by mistake?

hi guys

Need some clarification on Dual Degree Programmes. Most schools is the US offer an additonal degree along with an MBA. I am looking at pursuing one, main interest being in Public Policy (PP)/ Operations

I have few questions. Some of them might be a little naive but I'd be extremely happy if one could give some insight into how this works

a) All schools state one needs to accepted by both the schools offering the degree. Does this mean I need to fill two separate application forms that need to be submitted to respective schools and pay two separate application fees?

b) Does the course fee remain the same irrespective of single / dual degree. If it does change, does it change depending on the 2 degree that we would like to pursue? Eg : fees is different for dual degree in MBA/Law and MBA/PP?

c) Are there schools which accept the same application form for both the degrees ? Or are there any integrated programmes where in one gets both the degrees at the end 2/3 yrs? the MMM porgram at Kellogg is something like this where one gets two degree at the end of two yrs.. Not sure how the ross-tauber works out..

d) Can one opt for dual degree during the first year of study of the MBA and if so will it have an impact on the fees, visa etc?

Any other information that one can provide will be useful. I am slightly confused about the way that one has to go about applying for he dual degree program.

cheers
Hi Martian/Psycho and others,
Thanks for the excellent efforts you ppl are putting in and thanks for this excellent thread!!!

Good to see another long time lurker (?) getting converted into a registered user just for this thread.

My worry is that I do not have evidences on paper of most of my achievements
It's ok if you can't prove everything on paper. Use your essays and the recommendations to build credibility for yourself.

Adcoms can sense the genuine ones from those who are faking it.

Do highlight the fact that your work was recognised, but rather than going overboard with details (like the free car being in the name of the employer), focus on topics that are really important.

With your experience level, I'm sure finding more impactful and relevant things to include in the essays will not be a challenge.

Good luck, bro.

Want to know about my bekar car?

I am Ranjeet Jha and presently working in a Public Sector Bank as Branch Manager.

I have joined the bank in 2000 as P.O. I am simple B.Sc (Physics).

Now I want to switch my job and i have thought as below and eager to seek suggestion whether I am right.

I am going to appear in CFA Level I in Dec'2011 and Level II in June'2012. I will appear in GMAT in Jan/Feb 2012 and try for one year PGPX from IIM Ahmedabad / IIM Calcutta for 2013-2014 session. Also appear in CFA Level III in June'2013. I assumed that I will pass CFA in first chance and I will get MBA Degree from IIMs in 2014 and my career will be good.

I can also appear in GMAT in this July and go for 2012-2013 session in IIMs but my profile is not so good (10th - 67%; 12th - 67%; B.Sc - 58%; and no good extra activities) and therefore I want to strengthen my profile by doing CFA.

I also want to know that whether IIMs will take me even after CFA as I have neither foreign work exp nor good academics.

What is better for me? If you have any other idea abt me, please tell me.

I will really be obliged.

PS: i know i lack in experience but still could you suggst schools that could admit someone with my kind of profile

Would like to know among which schools among the top 20 would I be in with a decent chance......my details are as below....
:
Got placed in Pricewaterhouse Coopers.....will work for about 3 years before going for an MBA.....

Nishant,
If you are looking at the top-20, it's too early to talk about whether your profile is competitive or not (yes, despite the high GMAT). The main component - your work-ex - is blank right now as you are just starting your career.

Also would like to know whether I should consult a consultant during the application process.....if yes then can you suggest some good consultants based in Kolkata???
Don't even start talking to consultants before you have a few years of work-ex under your belt. In parallel, build up your knowledge about how the top schools function, so you can evaluate if consultants are really looking at your interests or their clients' (i.e mainly unranked univs that are hoping to fill up their seats).

Right now, your critical reasoning skills (GMAT hangover!) are no match for their marketing & convincing abilities. You might just find yourself on a plane heading off to some school you never knew existed till you met some of these 'educational advisors'.

If you've set your eyes on the top-20, stick to that goal and don't fall for the tempting quick-n-easy options that might come your way. PwC is a good company to kickstart your career.

Good luck.

Im a 24 yr old Indian professional working in the R&D; division at a fortune 500 firm. I have scored 710 in my gmat (verbal 92% quant 75%)

I was looking at colleges in germany, netherlands and the US and want to pursue a career in technology management and innovation.

I have secured a business level certification in German.

I needed some advice as far as selecting my colleges and essays for a gud application this year. Any insight on this would be helpful.

I worry that not having any international work experience might be a setback because most of the colleges i see have a essay on 'an experience with a new culture' or 'some experience on a trip abroad' if you have experience in handling such cases feel free to let me know wat you think

I am open to taking advice from a consultancy but i somehow need to know that i would be well advised

Hi ,

First like to thanks all the consultants for helping guys like us .

Pros:

1. Good career progression

2. International exposure a big plus

3. Great extra-curricular (where the hell do they teach Fencing in India )

Cons:

1. GMAT will be a make or break

2. You will unfortunately still be pulled down by DDD - Diabolic Demographic Disadvantage of being IIM - Indian IT Male

1. Simply put get as a high GMAT score as possible. Let us be frank - even if you wanted it badly there is no way you can be sure of a 800. Each one of us have our own "glass ceiling". As long as you are confident that the score is the highest given the preparation, your background, and the constraints of time, you should go ahead. Be it 700 or 730 there is very little you can do about it.

2. For consulting remember that Brand Name trumps pretty much everything. So you will always have more people from Stanford going to a McK than say a McCombs. Not that McCombs is a bad school but because Stanford is just so much better. So aim for the highest possible school with your profile.

I want to know whether with this profile, I can expect a call from ISB.
Which other colleges I should apply for?

1. Female

2. Non-IT

3. GMAT 720

100% you will get a call based on your profile

However don't be too complacent - your essays and interview will play a huge part too (in the final selection that is).

Other schools depend on where you want to go. Some thoughts I had on my blog here

Hi Sameer,
:
would like to gain some insight into the IT consulting profiles, viz. job responsibilities, salaries, career-growth oppurtunities etc.

Gothamblitz,

Might be tough to put all the details in a short post. A better idea is to go on to the websites of IT Consulting companies and check out the job description. Good way to get a high level understanding.

Salaries at the lower designations will not be much. But once you get into the mid/senior management cadres, compensation can be quite a bit. But will not match the mainstream (strategy) consulting salaries.

Hey!
Can some1 actually explain what strategy consultants do!?
I was actually giving some thought to my post mba plans (assuming i do get an mba and i do get a choice in terms of placement) and i was confused between marketing and strategy consultancy.
can some1 give some clarity about the what these professionals do.

Hi,

Firstly, I appreciate the work you guys are doing.Keep up the good work

I am in a fix , and I need some advice.
I had applied to European schools & got admitted to EMLYON business school (France) a month back .I had accepted the offer , and I have also deposited the required deposit amount. However, yesterday I have received an interview call from SDA bocconi (Italy).I am really confused right now & need some advice.

SDA is amongst the top business school in Europe & is ranked highly in the FT rankings. Its current ranking (global) is 28. EMLYON's ranking is: 100
In Europe, the SDA's MBA programme is ranked at: 14 & EMLYONs MBA programme is ranked at: 27
The programme structure of SDA is no doubt excellent. Its good for strategy management (which is what I am looking for) & everything about the school is very good. However, the class size is 100- 120. On the other hand EMLYON is a very renowned school in France & is ranked third in France. Its class size is 40.

However, what I want is a good job after completing the course. I am ready to accept the offer of SDA (if I get it), but I just want to be sure about the job prospects (especially for Non EU candidates). At SDA the competition for jobs will be higher, as the class size is 100-120. Moreover, France is a better country than Italy, in terms of economy & job prospects.
I just dont want to be overshadowed, in a highly competitive batch of 100 students, during the job placement. I am more inclined towards EMLYON, but SDA is a better brand than EMLYON & is ranked very high in the FT rankings. I just want to be 100 % sure before taking any decision, but the problem is that I am just unable to decide on anything.
Pls advise what is to be done, because I have to put my bank loan application & on campus accommodation for EMLYON on hold if I have to go to SDA.
Thanks ,

Sachin Anand
