Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

This is my first post in PagalGuy. Got to know about this website some time back from my friend, who said "Dude, they can help u wil anything regarding ur prep" .

Paay lagu Varun-ji,

First thank your friend for recommending this thread and then tell him that the 'help you with anything' wala claim thoda zyada ho gaya. For instance, we cannot help you pack your tiffin box on the day of your GMAT test.

But we try to do our bit. Moving straight to your queries:

1. Is the list good enough, other wise please suggest me other colleges in replacement and also the reason why.
You've mentioned 'Would need scholarship and loans heavily.'
If that's a pre-requisite then for the first 4 schools on your 5-school list go with the assumption that you will not get any scholarship. If schols are important your list of schools will need to change.

2. I am confuse between selecting Indian college ISB or any other ASIAN college. (Considering the cost of education at some other Asian colleges like NUS and Nayang is comparable, which one has better future prospects and study approach)
If you want to stay in India, ISB beats the others hands-down in terms of RoI. If you want abroad, go for the country that you want to work in. It is easiest to get jobs in the same country rather than struggle for international placements. This applies to Asia, American and European schools too.

3. Kelley is Good for marketing, but its reputation among international students is playing it down. It is true ? (Because Kelley provides good Financial Aid and cost of education is also very reasonable)
I wouldn't agree with that. We got folks into Kelley with generous scholarships and their impression about the course doesn't resonate with yours. During tough years, everyone complains. When the going is good, they are all happy.

4. Last but very important. Depending upon my profile, if i am able to get a good GMAT score that i have mentioned, are the schools good enough. Or I should apply for more schools. AND what is the best time strategy to follow for these schools (Considering all schools in round 1 or dividing them between round 1 and 2 (How?)).
If you choose around 6-8 schools wisely and split them across Rounds 1 and 2, you can keep it manageable.

Good luck, sirji.

Thanks Boss ...

But according to you getting scholarship from TOP US Institutions even after a good score is not possible ? But these institutes have mentioned in their sites that they do offer some scholarships for international students ..

Please suggest me some colleges where the chances of getting scholarship are high. If not full then atleast to some countable extent ..

Thanks a lot

Varun,

It isn't impossible to get scholarships from the top schools. Like you said they offer several of these to domestic and international candidates. For instance, if you get the Reliance scholarship, you get a free ride for Stanford. Pretty cool, naa? So just imagine the level of competition to bag one of those.

The criteria for getting them goes way beyond the GMAT score. As a general rule of thumb your overall profile should be stronger than most other candidates. You'd be competing with folks who've got in (and not just with those who are applying). Which means for funding decisions, schools are comparing profiles that are already very strong and qualified.

Based on the limited info that folks share on these threads, it's tough to know if their essays, recos and interviews will be good, strong or impressive.

Your choice of stories, post-MBA goals, how impactfully you present your accomplishments and highlight your business & managerial potential will all matter. If you are able to put in a great application, your chances of getting scholarships will go up.

All I'm saying is, don't base your financing plans on the assumption that you will get funding from these top schools. If you get it, consider it a bonus. But focus on getting in first.

dual degree (B-Tech in CS +Masters in Mathematics) with from BITS-PILANI CGPA - 8.4/10 XII - 97% X- 92%
GMAT: 680 (gave gmat in 2009)
Work Exp as of now: 2 +1yr (paid internship as part of college course work at an IT giant)

Hi Geetha,

How did you manage a whole year of paid internship? Was it a full-time position?

Coz if it is, then you get to talk about 4 yrs of full-time experience by the time you join an MBA program next year. Then your marketing pitch for the schools you've listed (all pretty competitive for your profile) can move beyond justifying the number of years.

Others : I and my friends have been working on a mobile application as part of a location based crowd-sourcing business since 2 months.

I'm afraid with the wrong choice of words the adcoms might get a feeling that i'm trying to cook up a story just for the sake for projecting Entrepreneurial Experience.
Yes, important to tackle such stories with care. If you use it well, it'll enhance your profile as you are highlight many facets that your regular IT role cannot talk about. Work out the underlying details first, and think about all the next steps for this venture if it were to take wings. Get yourself in a position where you can defend your claims.

But if you position it just for the sake of impact, it can backfire. So tread with care on that last point.

It was a full-time position. The dual degree (Btech+MSc) students from Bits have an option where they can pursue paid/un-paid internship for 6 months - 1yr(2008-2009 in my case) just before graduating. After graduating in 2009 i have joined the same company but a different team.

I have got pretty much the same response from others as well for these set of schools.:p So i've put "Carnegie Mellon: Tepper " and "University of Texas at Austin: McCombs" under stretch option and working on the rest ...viz :
Georgetown University: McDonough
Texas A & M University: Mays and
Emory University: Goizueta .
Any take on these ? Coz these 3 schools seemed practical for my profile.pls correct me if i'm wrong :|

Hi,

I am planning to study abroad for my higher studies. I am starting with my search & planning. I want to know what should i decide first among country, course, college, Budget/fees, Exams, etc. Thank you in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I recently gave my GMAT and got a score of 680(Quant : 49 Verbal : 33). I have a 2 years work experience as an IT consultant (SAP Security) in TCS, Bangalore along with some extra curriculars added to my profile.

It is a very common profile but could anyone please assist me as to what all colleges can i apply now? Also, if i my sports record (12 years of sports career; along with state championships and a gold medal in Nationals for Swimming) can give me any added advantage here?

Even i was looking for a feedback on JCU Singapore..what are the career prospects etc...And would be glad if i could find a list of colleges for my score..

Really appreciate if anyone can suggest on this............

Hi

I have done my MBA from IMT Ghaziabad and currently working as Area sales manager for West Gujarat in Bajaj Auto Finance with 1 year experience

I want to get admissions in Ivy Leagues to get global exposure, better profile and pay package.

Is my profile good enough?
What should I do to prepare for these B schools?

I am very interested in taking GMAT but have no clue as to from where i should start..

Branson-anna, welcome to the PG forums.

MBA Application procedures can take over 1 year - right from GMAT prep to shortlisting schools to actually applying. Read up a little more about getting into the top MBA programs and the various steps that are involved.

Check out the MBA rankings (Financial Times is a good starting point) to see the top schools that accept GMAT scores. Also visit the official websites of a few good MBA courses to see what they ask for.

Gradually it'll all fall in place and many of your basic queries will be answered.

Mr Axel Rose.

Your nothin-more-than-an-acquaintance friend is grossly mistaken, my friend.

Also another wild guess. I'm guessing the exclamation mark, question mark and comma buttons your keyboard must be wearing out pretty fast (?).

Ground rules for Students:
1. Do not bad-mouth the consultants if they are late in replying. People offer help for free here. Understand that they are busy and appreciate that they are taking time out of their busy schedules to help you. If you have posted, please have some patience! Somebody will reply and not always at the speed you want.

A quick but Firm reminder to aspirants on this thread-- if you have posted, please have some patience. A consultant will reply. I've mentioned this in the opening thread but it's worth repeating again!

Generally there are 3 rounds. First one in Sept/Oct, then the subsequent deadlines come up after 2-3 months. Apply in the earlier rounds if possible, but do leave some options for Round 2 as well. Do check out the individual school deadlines that you are interested in.

could you please also let me know the decent B-schools which offer MBA program with a tution feee with in 25 lakh.
ISB and IIM-A PGPX would fall in that range. It would be tough to attend one of the top international schools within that budget unless you get generous scholarships.

Hi,

Is good profile a must for getting good university?
Can't it be managed with good score say 750+?

What are the options one has when he is not having a good profile except 3.5 yrs of Exp in IT and not so good academics?

NOTE: Sorry, if this has already been answered I tried to search posts but didn't found any.
