I wish to apply to decent colleges in Asia/Europe/USA , well only problem I think with my profile is that I dont have work experience , but well I do want to continue my education right now.
Milind,
Two options:
1. If you want to join an MBA program without experience, take the CAT (and all the wonderful variations XAT, MAT, SNAP etc) and aim for the good Indian bschools.
2. If you have international aspirations, have some patience, get some experience, build a strong profile and then apply.

Mixing the two will not be a good idea.

Thank you sir for your prompt reply.
Sir how is the option of MIM/MM/Msc.Finance abroad , and yes i am already taking coaching for CAT 😃
My name is Leonard, I'm interested in applying for an MBA program. I'll detail my profile below and I'd like to know what my chances are of getting into a top 10 business school in the world.
I'm Leonard and I'm from Cameroon, West Africa. I lived all my life in Cameroon before I went to South Korea on a four year scholarship to study Business Management and Economics at the undergraduate level. I finished my undergraduate studies with a 3.5/4.5 gpa (korean system) in February of 2010 and came to India to study IT specifically computer networking. I got certified in CCNA, CCNP and currently working on my CCIE now. In the meantime, I also got a job part time at The Princeton Review, India where I coach students in GRE and GMAT. I have been working for The Princeton Review here in India since May 2010 as a part timer and I recently, beginning of this month, changed to become a full timer. So now I work full time while trying to get certified in CCIE.
I plan on taking my gmat in the next few months, and I'm confident in getting a good score as I'd use my experience teaching and the resources available to me at TPR.
thus with my profile/background of international stay, study and work experience (1 year part time and 1 year full time as I plan on starting my MBA in fall 2012) decent gpa,IT certificates CCNA, CCNP and hopefully CCIE and hopefully a good gmat score, I'd like to know what my chances are of getting into a top ten global business school. I'm talking about the Harvards, Stanfords, Inseads, MITs, ISBs etc. I'd appreciate any other advice you can give me.
I am a 28 year old Engineer from NIT Surathkal with 6 years of experience in the IT industry. I was sent to US on assignment 2 years back as a Technical Lead and have been holding the bastion since then. I took two shots at GMAT in 2008, scoring 690(Jun) and then 710(Aug) with 6 and 5.5 AWA respectively(Wasn't contended but, am a workaholic and didn't want compromises on my work front, so convinced myself). I intend to get into top 20 schools in the US and with that in mind I have few questions :-
With current scores and experience, is my target realistic? Should I even be touching the top 10?
Will three year old scores be frowned upon?
I don't think I hit the ceilings in my prior attempts. But would a third attemp be negative? I beleive I can pump up to 740-750 (neglicting a bit of work ofcource, but guess now am in a position to do that :))
My name is Niharika Khanna. Here's a bit about me: Education: Bachelors in Economics Honours from Delhi University (finished in 2007) Work-ex: 4 yrs Company: Google India Pvt. Ltd. July, 2007 - Nov, 2009: Account Associate, AdWords Nov, 2009 - Present: Admin Assistant & Project Associate (reporting to the MD) GMAT score: 690
Im working towards submitting my MBA apps this year. The schools I'm targeting are Insead, Kellogg, Stanford. For the 4th school in my list - I'm confused if I should look at a European school (HEC, IE, ESSEC) or another US school (Dartmouth, Berkeley, Booth). I will be getting one of the recommendations from the MD.
Looking at the future, my focus is more on Marketing, General mgmt and Entrepreneurship (not on finance or consulting).
Do you believe that I'm looking at the right schools? Please let me know if you have an opinion on this which can help :)
Hi there, I am,Shubham, a 2010 passout from IIT Kharagpur. Here is a quick summary of my profile- 10h-84 12th - 82 CGPA- 7.6 Work-ex- 13 months(6 mths in Software Startup and 7 months in Mgmt Consulting in a renowned consulting firm). I had decent enough extra acads. I also had a startup which failed miserably.
I plan to apply next year. I dream of getting into Top 5 business schools(Harvard etc) but I am not sure how realistic is it given my profile( not great GPA, work-ex is also okay types). It would be great if you can provide your thoughts on this. Also, I would like to understand my focus area for next year so that I could realize this highly ambitious goal. Through this question, I also want to gain insight about what qualities does these top schools look for?

Hi,
To add to my previous post - I believe that one of my biggest strength is the unique profile I have - and the experience I bring with it. The other advantage I have is the access to the amazing senior leadership team at Google - all of whom have finished their education from the top business schools. I will be in a position to get recommendations from the alums of each of the schools I'm applying too along with a direct recommendation from the MD (who I report to).
However, I want to make sure that I apply to a good mix of dream schools and realistic schools as well. This is why the decision of the 4th school is very important - and has me confused!
Reasons of choosing the 3 schools:
1. Stanford - DREAM school! (will be able to get reco from VP who is an alum) 2. Kellogg - Great school/one of the best for marketing/summer internship opportunity/direct recommendation from MD who is an alum 3. Insead - One of the best Asian School (in the world)/not too far from home/great general MBA course/good job prospects within Asia+you get international exposure
In all of these schools - the average work ex is about 5.5 yrs and the avg age is 28/29 (whereas i have a work ex of 4 yrs right now).
Do you think I need to change the way I'm looking at schools? Also, which are the other schools I can consider?
Hey I finished my engineering in mechanical stream a few months ago and am working for a consulting firm currently . I am interested in getting into finance domain especially in investment banking/private equity/hedge funds. Would it make more sense for me to work 2 years while working on gmat/application and do an mba with finance specialization? And then hope to get a job with an investment bank? Or should I go for an MS in Finance, which would enable me to do it next year itself, and if I do it in UK, within 1 year itself. Also, there are people who are advising me to do the MS in Finance and after a few years, the MBA too. I'm still trying to understand if there is any benefit in doing so. Looking forward to your replies Thanks in advance

I was sent to US on assignment 2 years back as a Technical Lead and have been holding the bastion since then.
For those who are wondering what a 'bastion' is (I didn't know the literal meaning), here's the Wikipedia definition.
A bastion is a structure projecting outward from the main enclosure of a fortification, situated in both corners of a straight wall (termed curtain), facilitating active defence against assaulting troops. It allows the defenders of the fort to cover adjacent bastions and curtains with defensive fire.
Ok, back to the queries.
With current scores and experience, is my target realistic? Should I even be touching the top 10?

1. Sure sirji. Go ahead and apply to 1 or 2 top schools. Just don't go overboard with it. Include some schools where you'd be a stronger candidate vis-a-vis your competition.
2. Three year scores should be ok with most schools. A recent score is better as it tells Adcoms how the CPU up there is performing now as opposed to 3 years back when you purchased the laptop.
3. Multiple attempts will not hurt. But I'd suggest getting the rest of the application strategy in place first. If you delay the process, you'll realise at the end there's a huge to-do list (essays, goals, recos) that hasn't been taken of.
I am a graduate in metallurgy and materials engg from NIT Trichy. I had given GMAT in April 2009 and scored 710. However just to gain work experience I decided to work for atleast 2 years before applying. I have 2 years of work experience with TATA Motors as assistant manager and 1 year (and running) with Nandan group of companies as executive assistant to chairman and managing director. My acads till 12th have been good and in engineering it has been above average.
Can someone please advise me the kind of colleges that I should apply to?
I am persuing my B Tech correspondence....from not so famous, RVD university.......and also hold licence in aircraft maintenance engg.... : 20 month exp in various airline as AME trainee.. 8 months work exp in and airline as reservation exe...
Avirup,
As you are still studying for the B.tech, I'd suggest focussing completely on it and then trying to build up on some managerial experience if you can. Take the GMAT and see what score you get.
Might be worthwhile to expand the scope outside the top 20 as well.

Niharika-ji,
Responded to your email several days back. No response after that! So skipping this post.

Milind,
Got your PM and also saw your SOS re-post.
I had intentionally skipped the follow-up post as I had already answered the overseas study part in my orig response. Here it is again:
"If you have international aspirations, have some patience, get some experience, build a strong profile and then apply."
Just to add to that. Whether you skip the MBA and start pursuing any other masters program abroad where experience is not reqd, the risks are similar. So don't look at other courses as a fast-track option to leave the country.

Always good to have a balance in the selection of schools, Shubham. Specially when you include highly competitive schools like Harvard on the list.
The failed startup story need not be a liability. In fact if you can talk about how you approached it last time and what the gaps in your skills were and how an MBA from a top school will help fill those gaps, then you've converted it into a strength.
Top schools look for a combination of academic, professional and personal capabilities. And of course, the often beaten-to-death 'D' word - Differentiation.
I have done Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and then bachelor degree in Science with 48 % while working. Can I try for executive MBA by giving GMAT or other test. I want to apply for best collages for e MBA from India. Will that be possible ? Which side of management shall I choose. I am tinking of going for general business management or finance. Will there any scope for this. 😛
