With the limited information you have provided here, I can say that you have a good selection of b-schools. Infact, at MIT, you would have access to the cutting edge research and (maybe a chance to work with a professor). This is assuming, that you are not already tired of R&D.;
To comment any further, I would need to understand your career goals.

Hi ,

I want to pursue my career in General management.
I want to change my present Job profile i,e. R&D;.

Hi Gurus,

Appreciate the help provided. My question is related to achievement essay of ISB. Please let me know whether helping and mentoring a colleague who is not part of my team which made a change in that person can be mentioned as one of the achievements.

Always good to have a balance in the selection of schools, Shubham. Specially when you include highly competitive schools like Harvard on the list.

The failed startup story need not be a liability. In fact if you can talk about how you approached it last time and what the gaps in your skills were and how an MBA from a top school will help fill those gaps, then you've converted it into a strength.

Top schools look for a combination of academic, professional and personal capabilities. And of course, the often beaten-to-death 'D' word - Differentiation.

GMAT score bataya nahi aapne?

Thanks sameer. Apologies for delay in reply. Abhi tak diya nahin hain GMAT. Planning to give sometime early next year. I had some more queries.

1) Startup was for a brief period of 4 months-during which we realized we could not pull it through due to numerous reasons. So I am not sure whether to ever include it or not.

2) Now you said a mix of academic, professional and personal capabilities. So will my CGPA 7.61 will hamper my chances if I get decent recos from my firm ?

3) Does a good score like 770 or something like that(highly optimistic, I know 😃 ) will cover for my average academics or D factor to an extent?

4) I get the D factor thing. But Can you please help me in better understanding, what exactly can it be, some example from your past experiences. I believe it will be really helpful and give me a lil clear picture.

5) What is the right time to apply to such top 5 schools?

I know its a long mail. I would really appreciate your reply to this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi people. I am pursuing my engineering from a reputed college in India. I currently am in the final year. My life is on tenterhooks due to the drop taken by me this year, just to be away from studies. My dear mother passed away this year and I haven't still recovered from the shock. I had a very bad third year in my college as well. The problem is my college has started two and a half months back and I still haven't paid the fees. They won't allow me to pay the fees now as I have already missed the mid-term exams. I get countless negative thoughts everyday, I am going to start medication for this chronic depression of mine. I feel gutted now. I don't know whether I get any reply to this dilemma of mine, but I really will be grateful if someone tells me if this will affect my chances of getting into a good MBA college in India. I am really not a bad student, I am preparing for CAT 11 and my mock scores are consistently above 90-92. I am considering getting back to college the next year, what can I do this year to not be idle? My college by the way has the NKT rule, I have to clear 3 papers of the first three years...Will there be any action taken against me? I know am asking a lot of questions, this is how helpless i am feeling at this very moment.. thanks

everyone's got ups and downs in life - sorry to hear about your bad year. I think what matters most in an MBA application (and otherwise) is that you bounced up from your rock bottom and came out fighting. So, when you do appear for your interviews, this is what you need to demonstrate. To get going, you can do stuff like volunteering (which will also give you a sense of purpose) or get a job. Can't comment on the last bit about teh NKT rule, hope someone else will pitch in.

Thanks a ton buddy :-)..you are a God send...

can you suggest me what can I do in this one year so that I do not sit idle at home? depression really gets on to you that way. I want to move out and do something badly..I have considered appearing for the RBI young scholars exam in Jan 2012, apart frm that I ll continue preparing hard for CAT..and I am considering joining an NGO too...which NGO should I be joining?
Thanks sameer. I had some more queries.

Shubham,

1. Take a call for each school based on the essay topics. If it helps strengthen the essay, include it.

2 & 3. A high GMAT can only partially cover up low grades, as it's not exactly replicating all that your undergrad tested. Also it can't 'fix' issues that aren't connected. For instance, a very high GMAT score cannot fix the issue of low work-ex or no leadership exposure.

4. A little too tough to cover it in a comprehensive manner in a post like this. But essentially it comes down to explaining how you are special and better than your competition in the same 3 areas - academic, professional and personal - and highlighting your potential as a future business leader.

5. The earlier the better. A lot of free money also up for grabs if you get in early.

Hey Sam! I am no expert. I am just thinking aloud.

It can be mentioned but with your experience of 8years and 2 months with 5 years of international experience (got from the spreadsheet we are maintaining), don't you think 'helping and mentoring a colleague who is not part of my team which made a change in that person' is a bit bland? I have not seen anything what you have written and the type of change it brought in that person but I am not able to understand the 'big deal' about it to be put in essay (given your experience) that asks about your 2 most significant achievements.

PS: Sorry to butt in.
@Consultants - Please excuse me.
@Sam1254 - No offense intended.

by all means, write about mentoring a colleague. Mentoring people is a key leadership skill - just ascertain that you are able to clearly demonstrate the before and after situations, and that you intersperse your answer with the key personality traits that you used to mentor this person.

Just an add on after reading thisguy's reply - I was not aware of sam1254's work experienec details. Having said that, he could still have made a great impact on his colleague, maybe turned him around, so I think its a very relevant achievement.

selfmade, impossible for anyone else to tell you what your career goals should be ( also goes against your username on this forum)

Probably at IIM indore, you told them exactly what you have mentioned here- without having any plan/ idea about how you would go about achieving it ( I am sure they must have grilled you on it). So your goals are hard to be appreciated by any b-school unless they are clear cut
and not dreamy).
You could get into education consulting considering 8 years of coaching experience, though not MBA admissions consulting please

Seriously speaking, you need to chalk out your career path yourself- if you want to have your own CL kind of outfit, figure out what it takes to get there and move in that direction.

thanks buddy..i do understand in todays world most significant achievements are mostly revolving around "ME" than helping others. that applies to MBA as well i guess. Again it depends on person to person what is achievement - Improving oneself, improving an organisation by getting more $$ or helping another soul...again no offense taken or given 😉
