@MBA help: Here is a question. Any opinion on my dilemma?

MBA is only a means to an end. Decide based on your long term goals/ area of interest. Take the IB opportunity if thats what you will enjoy and see yourself doing in the long run. But a start-up situation typically requires people who know their stuff well, and can hit the ground running from the word go. Don't expect hand holding and training. You'll learn on the job... while discharging big responsibilities. IFC on the other hand could provide an organized structure and support system which might help you transition from IT into Finance, unless one is starting a new office somewhere... which i hope is not the situation. Hope this helps you weigh your options!

Vivek,
I usually don't recommed folks to take the GMAT if they are close to the average for the schools they are applying to. In your case, however, if you know that you can bump it up to 750, then it might be worth trying again. Your role has a fair bit of quant involved, so a higher GMAT score than the regular IT gang also highlights your quant and verbal prowess (like your brilliant CAT performance did).
The other aspect for you to focus on is the skills that you can talk about from the current trading role. I'm sure there are dependencies on the analyst teams, clients (to some extent, if you are into institutional sales and there isn't an intermediate account manager to manage the front-ending). But in relative terms, these roles (specially the highly niche ones like US Interest Rate trading) are generally perceived to be more 'person specific' rather than 'team dependent'. Correct me if this isn't true in your case.
The second aspect for you to address is how an MBA will help you if you want to continue being in the Prop Trading arena. can you just continue doing what you are doing and then move up the ladder?
Address these points in your essays before you hit the submit button.

Hats off to the consultants for helping us so much.
I have some doubts regarding the essays. As I was going through earlier trends, ISB usually asks that what a person can add to the class of ISB. However, this time I do not see any direct essay topic asking this question. I just want to know, whether I should write what I can add to ISB class in 2nd essay. Keeping in mind that word limit is only 300, and if one approaches to write to the point answer, this explaination should not come.
Please suggest me whether I should add one or two lines, explaining my value addition to class.
Thanx in advance
Hi,
Please find my profile below:
Age - 24
Work Ex - 3 yrs till date
GMAT -690(Q49 V34)
10th-81.2%
12th-77%
B.Tech Civil Engineering (IIT Bombay)-7.17/10
Work Experience- 3 years as a Business Analyst (Became an Analyst from Associate Analyst after first 2 years) in Oracle Retail. It is not really a typical IT exp instead more linked to software selling. The work involves taking historical data and showing expected value out of Oracle software if implemented.
International Exp (Very minimal)
1) 10 weeks internship in Sweden during college
2) 5 weeks training in Boston for work
Decent EC's in College(Hostel Volley Team, Mess Co) and Workplace (Founder and President of a Toastmasters club, Part of a Running Club)
Post MBA plans- Would like to make a transition into Management Consulting with retail as a starting domain and then branching out into others. I would like to eventually come back to India (If in fact I get an admit abroad) and settle down, since I see a lot of requirement of that kind of work once FDI in Retail is relaxed and many international players enter Indian market.
My current list of schools include the following(no particular order), I have taken schools known for GM/Operations:
1) ISB
2) LBS
3) Kellogg
4) Darden
5) Tuck
6) Duke
7) Ross
Johnson
Can experienced people please comment on my profile and my selection of schools (stretch, reach, safe?). I understand I may not have a stellar profile and hence I would appreciate honest feedback however brutal it maybe.
Also it will be really helpful if folks can give me or direct me to places of information about Funding studies(Credilla in India gives INR 20 Lacs only) and work permit issues in US/UK after completing the MBA.
Hi
My profile :
GMAT : 700(QA 50, VA:34), AWA:6
B.Tech: IIT ( CG:7.58 )
2 Yrs. of work exp. at ONGC (field exp)
1 yr. of exp in an education sector invested startup
CFA(US) - 2 levels
I am looking to switch to consulting particularly business consulting post MBA
My queries :
a) Would ISB be a good option looking my profile & especially my interest of switching to consulting.
b)Can anybody let me know should I target other foreign B-Schools like NUS, NTU, NYU etc. in preference to ISB that will help me switch my career to consulting. If that is the case should I apply to ISB in Round 2?

Priya, In your 2nd ISB essay, you have a handful to write about in a mere 300 words - your short term career goals, maybe a few lines on how ISB will help you achieve them, or maybe a few line on how your short term goals lead upto the long term goals.
Trying to fit in how you will contribute to ISB gets a bit much- its always better to keep your answers simple, straight forward, to the point and "" directly answering the question"".
Infact you have a 3rd essay where you can build this story.

ISB did about 33% in Consulting recruitements in 2011, teh highest for any industry. So it will be a good choice for you.
other foreign b-schools- best way to decide which ones to apply to is by looking at their employment reports and determing if they are sending candidates to the companies that you are interested in joining. Another great way is to talk to alumni in the consulting industry.
Apply to ISB in R1- if its your first choice school, apply in R1, but only if you can complete yoru best effort application by Sept. 15

Dear Consultants,
I am in a technical sales role and looking to augment my skill set to grow into business development through an MBA.
Below is my profile:
Grad: BE (VTU): 74%
Work-ex: 6+ years
GMAT: Oct 2010 - 710 (Q: 48, V: 39) AWA: 5.5
Jul 2011 - 700 (Q:50, V: 34) AWA: 6
Industry: Automotive
- Applied last year to ISB, made it to the interviews, but not selected.
- Asked for feedback and was told to focus on two things mainly:
- show more passion for business role in interview
- improve GMAT score, if possible
- Applying again to ISB this year... there is an increase in the number of seats this year due to addition of Mohali campus (additional 210 seats)
- Also planning to apply to some b-schools abroad (INSEAD? Kellys? LBS?)
i have below questions:
- do you think i stand a chance in ISB this year (I have been working on learning more about the job profile i wish to change to, post MBA)
- which international b-schools do i stand a chance of getting through, considering my profile?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Consultants
I want to ask which are B-schools schools that have CGPA/percentage as one of their eligibility criteria? Which are the B-schools that give considerable/much weightage to acads at the college level and how the acads of candidates from different backgrounds are compared for the selection of the successful candidates?
I shall be thankful if anyone of you can provide some valuable insights.
Hello Consultants,
I have a GMAT score of 770(99%ile) V45 (99%ile) Q50(92%ile) but my AWA is only 4.0 (20%ile)
. Can someone plz tell me how much of a drawback will it be ?? Can it drastically hamper my chances during admissions or during granting of scholarships ??
Sachin, B-schools look at your profile in totality. So your profile would be viewed for undergrad GPA, GMAT, work experience, career progression, other achievements and recommendations. Its not possible to say what percentage of weightage would be given to the GPA at a b-school. However, say, if you have a low score in your GMAT Quants., then your undergrad quant. scores are more likely to be under scrutiny.
