Hello Consultants, I have a GMAT score of 770(99%ile) V45 (99%ile) Q50(92%ile) but my AWA is only 4.0 (20%ile) . Can someone plz tell me how much of a drawback will it be ?? Can it drastically hamper my chances during admissions or during granting of scholarships ??
Devilmaycry, Congratulations on the great GMAT score. I would say that don't get bothered by your AWA scores too much - you still have a great verbal percentile, as well as well crafted and written essays will take care of it.
Hey MBA Decoder, Thanks for your reassuring reply. Can you also plz recommend me some B Schools I can target for fall 2012 in the US.
My GPA is 3.3/4 B.Tech (CS) WE 38 months by Aug'2012 (Indian IT Male)
One special point to be considered is that I am looking for admission cum scholarship. I have major financial constraints & would give preference to scholarships even if I have to go to a college thats slightly below par.

Good idea to re-take the GMAT, Nirvana ji.
Your undergrad performance seems decent, so I'm sure with some practice, you'd be able to do well on the GMAT. Our resident GMAT guru on PG, Shriman Arun (pyschodementia) might be able to help.
Going in with a very low score is a risk you could avoid, as it can make Kurt Kobain look like Saint Gobain.
well i have done a PG course in marketing from mumbai...By some stroke of faith i got in into media planning and now have 3+ years of work experience in media planning.. however I do not njoi media planning & want tp move to Marketing... Companies however do not entertain media planners as marketing/branding professionals.. & i dont want to be stuck here all my life...
So.. I m looking out for specialized 1 yr course in Marketing (India/Abroad). Can you please guide me.. also should i prepare my self for GMAT..
Hi, I'm new to this forum and have been following this thread. I have a couple of queries:
I have been working for 4 years in an IT company and have recently been promoted to the TA position. On the side, I have started an internet venture with my friend and it has seen considerable success and has risen to the top spot in India in it's domain (based on number of hits). Q: How do I play this out to the fullest in my SOP and my interviews? Will they be concerned with the conflict of interest between my job and my venture?
I don't have the monetary resources required for an MBA. I might be able to scrape through after some assistance from the college. Q: Do I need to apply only in the first round to attain a scholarship? Would a second round application ruin my chances of assistance?
I had taken an year off before starting engineering. I wanted a particular college and worked an extra year to get through to it. In this period I was involved in some social work and also learnt how to play the keyboard. Q: How do I put this through to them considering I don't have proof of either. Also, should my off-year be mentioned in my SOP or should I wait for them to bring it up?
Q: How do I play this out to the fullest in my SOP and my interviews? Will they be concerned with the conflict of interest between my job and my venture?
The adcom would not be concerned about the conflict of interest - its infact a plus for you to talk about in your applications- shows entrepreneurial instincts. And if this website is in the direction of what you want to do further in your career, you could weave it into your career goals essays.
Q: Do I need to apply only in the first round to attain a scholarship? Would a second round application ruin my chances of assistance?
Scholarships are awarded in both first and second round, so you have a good chance in both rounds. However, if more people apply in Round 2, you would have more competition for the same pie. A better strategy would be to apply to your best bet b-schools in Round 1...its always better to spread out your list across both rounds.
Q: How do I put this through to them considering I don't have proof of either. Also, should my off-year be mentioned in my SOP or should I wait for them to bring it up?
You should mention the year off in the optional essay as adcoms expect to hear about such details. It would also benefit you to talk about it because a). you were spending your time working hard towards a goal (shows determination- hopefully you did get in there) b). you were also picking up extra -curricular skills/activities (shows you are enterprising). Don't fret about the proofs, adcoms will take your word for it...maybe you will get to discuss music during your interview, which will validate your music interest.
On the whole, you should weave all these points into coherent stories through your essays, that show your multi-dimensional personality and you as a person, who knows exactly what he wants to achieve in life.
I appeared for GMAT this year in Jan and got a 610 (v-26; q-46 & awa-6) in my first attempt ๐ , although my preparation was to reach 700+ but somehow things didn't go very well on the day. : I would like to ask if I should go ahead with appearing for GMAT again or could reapply to HULT Or to RSM, MBS, Thunderbird etc.
If we are talking about a 100-point difference between the expected and actual scores, then I'd say go for a re-take and claim what you deserve.
With a substantially higher GMAT score, the options you'd be looking at would be very different.

I would like to ask if I should go ahead with appearing for GMAT again or could reapply to HULT Or to RSM, MBS, Thunderbird etc. Or could you provide me the names of b-schools I could get through which specialize in IBO/Strategy and which would help a better transition. I'll be re-applying hopeful to get through for fall 12', or re-writing the GMAT.
Thanks
IMO with over 12+ years experience I don't think a HULT/ RSM/ Thunderbird would give you want you want from an MBA.
I suggest you retake the GMAT and give a shot to schools which are ranked a bit higher, and where you can leverage your experience fully.
Q: How do I play this out to the fullest in my SOP and my interviews? Will they be concerned with the conflict of interest between my job and my venture?
Most successful businesses start off moonlighting so don't worry about it. It will be a huge advantage to articulate the entrepreneurship story well. BSchools love someone who has the energy and drive to go the extra mile.
Q: Do I need to apply only in the first round to attain a scholarship? Would a second round application ruin my chances of assistance?
Apply earlier than later is always a good strategy but I don't think scholarship decisions are taken before R2 deadlines. So don't worry at all!
Q: How do I put this through to them considering I don't have proof of either. Also, should my off-year be mentioned in my SOP or should I wait for them to bring it up?
Schools don't even look at what you have done before graduation. So don't even bring it up - no one will bother
All 3 of us ended up online on this thread together - so we ended up responding to the same posts. As we say in Benguluru - Njaaai maadi! (translates to "Aish Karo")
Thanks a ton Psychodementia and MBA Help! These responses clear up a lot of doubts! However, the two of you seem to disagree on the subject of the off-year.
Pyschodementia: "Schools don't even look at what you have done before graduation. So don't even bring it up - no one will bother "
MBA Help: "You should mention the year off in the optional essay as adcoms expect to hear about such details."
These are two diametrically opposite views. And frankly, of all the things, this particular detail is what's bothering me the most. So hearing your views now, I'm a little concerned. What is the right way?
I haven't really been able to capitalize on the off-year with respect to the actual goal I had (getting Comp Sc in D.C.E.). I did keep myself occupied while I studied, but in the end, I wasn't able to get through (I did get a decent Engg college though)! So I would rather stay away from the "achieving what I wanted" bit you mentioned MBA Help! ๐ I'll think of something! :)
I'd love for someone who's faced the off-year problem before and managed to make it through to a MBA school to chime in too!
And thanks again! What you guys do here, spending valuable time and exhibiting incredible patience with noobs like us is commendable!

Maybe we should have Sameer jumping in his own (perhaps 3rd) version of the answer
Jokes apart I think the answer from MBA Help is if it is during your graduation or after it. There will be NO SPACE to mention about what you did before you started your degree so there is really no question about mentioning it. Heck you were perhaps 17 when this happened so I still will stick to what I said - don't bother
I would like to know if there is any other take on this
hi, I need your assistance in getting a realistic picture of my standing for mba abroad (US)
GMAT score - 620 :quant 49/ verbal 27 GRE score 1340 :q 790/ v 550
do you suggest i go for tier one b-schools since i have strong academic, professional and extra curricular record? Incase i plan to do all the admission procedures on my own, which is the best site for step by step approach. which reasonable yet efficient professional consultants do you suggest?
ABGMAT: strong advice in Arun's: " There will be NO SPACE to mention about what you did before you started your degree so there is really no question about mentioning it".
....I did mean after graduation, but lost sense of your timing....
I have heard that European B schools are really good and the best part is that there is very little or no fees? the rumor any good?
Wow, Mr. Fit, I'd myself love to go to a b-school which is excellent and educates for free...please let me know which ones are these...nothing like a European studying holiday
GMAT: 660 (48-Quant, 33-Verbal) WE: 2yrs. by March 2012 in IT (Infosys) Acad- 10th: 74.4 (Maharashtra board) 12th: 75.7 (Maharashtra board) B.E.: 63.5 (Mumbai University)
I am a little concerned about the fees. Would prefer an average college over a better one if I get scholarship in the average.
Please advise, is it worth applying for any of the top 25 colleges. Are there any realistic chances?
I was expecting a better GMAT score. Have I got any realistic chances in any of the following universities:
1) Stern, NYU, USA - Rank 15 in FT 2) Yale School of Mangement, USA - Rank 15 3) Esade, Spain - Rank 21 4) Judge, University of Cambridge - Rank 26 5) Said, Univ of Oxford - Rank 27
Last years cut off in SP Jain was 680. I am from Mumbai so I would also like to know if applying in SP is realistic (hoping tht this yr cut off would b less )
Pardon my ignorance. I have little idea about the procedure of applying to colleges. My queries: 1) Do we get to know in advance whether we are getting scholarships for a particular programme in a particular university, or is it so that we have to take the admission and only then we get to know. 2) Is there a significant difference between chance of getting scholarships if we apply in R1 and that if we apply in R2.
Took my GMAT a few days back and could just manage a 660 (Q 40 V 41). The section on quant was 75 mins of hell. Does anyone have any suggestion on books, classroom help in Hyderabad, etc.

For many schools, scholarship decisions are generally taken at a later stage. The time could be a few weeks to a few months later. Sometimes folks have got scholarships after starting the MBA program as well.
In order to reserve your seat, they may ask you to pay a deposit. Depending on the school it may range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars (check out Columbia's policies).
2) Is there a significant difference between chance of getting scholarships if we apply in R1 and that if we apply in R2.
Yes, just like in the case of admission offers, earlier is better for scholarship decisions too. But having said that, many people I know have been able to get scholarships (and pretty significant amounts) in the second round as well. The calibre and rankings of these schools will vary, though.
