Gaurav,
Your choice of b-schools should depend on what your expactations from the MBA education are and which b-school will best help you meet those expectations.
Then there are other factors that can influence your decision, like the location (east coast, west coast, mid west/ proximity to financial center/ industry/ silicon valley etc. etc.), faculty, placement, particular courses that you are interested in and that b-school teaches them, the b-school community and the vibe you get from them, the mode of teaching (case method or lectures).
Your score of 720 will fall in the mid 80% range of most b-schools, so "eligibility" not an issue, doing BMS is also not going to work against you.
With Round 1 deadlines less than a month away, you should quickly chart out your application strategy so that you can split your submission dates wisely between Round 1 and round 2.
The best way to shortlist b-schools is to go on their websites and read about them.

Sir,
I have been working in the shipping sector for the past 15 months, first i was
working as a Chartering broker and recently i have joined another shipping company and handling a project for them.
I have few queries in mind and would be really grateful if you could answer them,
1)I plan to give my GMAT next year(in july/aug) and do my MBA from Singapore(NUS,NANYANG) or India, depending on my GMAT score plus where i can get an admission. What other colleges do you recommend keeping the fact in mind that i don't want to spend more than 25 lakhs on my MBA?
(Note:I can even consider other countries.)
2)I have 15 years of education,so Sir do i have to complete one more year of education before my MBA to complete the eligibility criteria abroad or 15 years is good enough? What all countries require 16 years of education?
I would be really thankful if you could please solve my queries,
thanking you in advance---Kunal Dhanda
Hello All,
I have been looking out for US B-schools which require 3 years of experience for admissions. The only school am aware of is HULT and have not been able to increase the counter.
I need the data for one of my small projects. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance !!

Kunal-ji, what does a chartering broker do? Zara sankshipt mein bataiye na, so we know what kind of skills you might have picked up.
1)What other colleges do you recommend keeping the fact in mind that i don't want to spend more than 25 lakhs on my MBA?You could consider the conventional 2-year programs in the US as well. Financing is generally a combo of personal savings, loans and scholarships. So if you get a good GMAT score and put in strong applications, you could target some decent schools in the US, apart from the ones already on your list.
2)I have 15 years of education,so Sir do i have to complete one more year of education before my MBA to complete the eligibility criteria abroad or 15 years is good enough? What all countries require 16 years of education?15yrs should be fine for most schools. If you are concerned, before applying you could send across a note to the admissions office to confirm.

Completely at Sea?
@Martianonearth:
Thanks for your prompt reply, grateful for that.
As a chartering broker, our company used to provide ships for transport of cargoes across the world.Example:If 75000 MT of coal has to transported from Australia to India then they require a ship and we used provide that.Basically the job involved a lot of negotiation(Bidding offers) and co-ordination(Keeping a close watch at the movement of the ship and whether there are any delays or not).
Sir is the 16 years education criteria only for some US colleges or colleges in other country require this?I don't want to miss an opportunity because of not being able to meet this criteria at the last moment. So if you suggest i can pursue a 1 year post grad diploma if required.
Thanks & Regards
Kunal
i completed my degree on 2010 and worked in a small scale industry... but didn't work in a reputed company(dont have an experience certificate) can i get a good B-school to do my mba in any of the top 30 ranking institutes
Kunal,
Thanks for the additional insight. Sounds much more interesting now that we can relate to it. Do the same thing in your essays. Ensure that Adcoms know what you do at work, don't assume that they'll know.
On the 15/16 yr story, agar tension zyada ho raha hai, toh shoot out a few emails right now to some schools you are interested in and see what they say. Check their websites thoroughly first to see if they have specified it, nahi toh popat ho jayega.

Hello
I'm a prospective Fall '12 applicant to MBA - Finance programs in USA.
I've taken the Revised GRE and the scores would be out in November 2011 (P.S. - GRE scores are accepted by most B-schools now)
I've done my Bachelors in Business Management with a majors in International Finance from University of Mumbai.
JP Morgan Chase - Mumbai - 1 year of work exp in IB.
Nomura International PLC - London - 1 of the only 2 Indians selected amongst 1000's for a 6 months internship.
Morgan Stanley - Mumbai - 4 months in IB.
Had to leave Morgan Stanley to handle family business as my father fell terribly ill, and I being his only son had to take over and handle the business, and plan to do so until I fly for my MBA next fall. Handling and growing the business quite well, in spite of it being offtrack(Interior Designing)than my previous work experience in IB & education. Can this be highlighted well in my essays and work as a +ve point for me?
Will have total of 3 years of work exp by Fall 2012.
Very active with a few NGOs & other community services. excellent extra curriculars and co curriculars too.
Can you please suggest me B-schools in USA that match my profile.
Thanks for your help in advance and also for taking the time to read this. (I just realized that I might have been verbose).
Hi there,
I'm considering applying to US B-Schools for a Fall 2012 admission and I'm in desperate search for some answers to a few queries.
My profile:
GMAT:720 (V41,Q47)
GPA :3.2
EC :Below Average (Photography Club,Marathons..... that sort of a thing)
TOEFL iBT:104 (Just couldn't sit through 4 hours ;))
Work Ex:
I've been working with a large IT Services firm for the past 4 years.
My job profile is a little unconventional. For the past two and a half years, I've been into business development, for software products falling under the innovation bracket ,catering to insurance companies. My primary responsibilities are, managing the idea pipeline for a 15000 strong unit within the IT firm, organizing client visits ,making sales pitches to visiting clients and creating marketing collateral.Additionally,I lead a core team of 8 and have good experience in managing small scale projects, in creating proposal plug-ins and in supporting client engagements/workshops.
My role is a high contact one,and I liaise with virtually all internal arms such as pre-sales, marketing and consulting groups, and external entities like start-up companies.Over the years, I have also picked up a good functional knowledge of the insurance business.
Before this, for the first one and a half years of my career,I was into software development.I used to support business development activities and have mentored a couple of college grads with their final year internship projects.
MBA Goals:
I want to shift into a marketing job.More specifically,a brand management one (because that's the closest it gets to entrepreneurship 😉 ).
I'm looking to specialize in marketing with a good mix of electives in entrepreneurship and innovation thrown in, so that I'm well prepared to start a business of my own later in life.I was also in search of a highly flexible course spanning two years. So my first obvious choice was Kellogg.
Apart from Kellogg,I'm considering applying to Darden,Ross,Fuqua and Anderson.I'm also applying to Kelly as a backup.I kinda ruled out Hass and Booth because I felt that my chances aren't that great at those schools.
Hope that was detailed enough! :)
Now the questions,
1.Am I being too optimistic here applying to the top ten schools? Should I also consider applying to some more lower profile Bschools?
2.I don't have workex outside India although I interact regularly with multiple clients (usually CXOs).Is not having workex outside a country of origin seen in a negative light?
3.My extra curriculars are not that great as you can see.Any chance it's going to hamper my odds of getting in?
4.Am I missing out on any of the other marketing powerhouses?
5.I understand that most of the colleges only ask for a minimum of 100in TOEFL.But should I reconsider taking it?
I would deeply appreciate it if you can help me out.
Warm Regards,
InsaneBong

Rohan, the two experiences are very different from each other. However, its something you can not change, so make the best use of it. You need to bring out through your essays that:
1. you have some key personality traits like, adaptability, maturity, business acumen etc.
2. You have easily transfered learning from one profession to the other ( from IB to running a business - the key is the word business- it just happened to be interior designing). Not just that, you have grown the business.
3. you have picked up some transferable skills from IB to business, which you will now take with you to your future career after b-school.
4. You can contribute to the b-school because of your varied experiences of two different businesses- one being entrepreneurial.
5. Along with this you have your other achievements in extra curricular activities, that you should also mention to demonstrate your multi faceted personality.
Your choice of b-schools will depend on what you want to do post MBA.

Hey MBA Help,
Thanks for the quick reply,
I would like to go into further details regarding my expectations from an MBA so that you can guide me better.
I want to pursue an MBA in Marketing preferably from a college located on the east coast (I have a brother who stays in New York City, so the "accommodation" part will be sorted in that case).
Also I wish to start applying next Fall, so I would have completed 3 years of work ex by then.
I would be willing to take a heavy loan in case i get into any of the top 10 colleges in the US.
So, if you could suggest me a few colleges that I can consider, that would be great.
P.S. - I have 15 years of college education since BMS is a 3 year course. However, I can pursue an M.Com if needed. Would it matter if I do an M.Com from the University or should I opt from a college only.
Thanks,
Gaurav.
Hi,
I have a total work experience of more than 13 yrs in IT industry and most it has been on software product development. My first 6 yrs has been spent working for a Dutch ERP giant and the later part with a British Automation giant. I have been fortunate that way of being associated with 2 big names in the IT industry. I have also won employee excellence award 3 times in the last 6 years. I have been in a managerial role for the last 5 years.
My current age is 37 and i would like to go back to school and do a one year MBA either from Europe or North America. Am also considering some of the PG exec programs offered by IIM in India. I have started preparing for my GMAT and would take up the exam by this year end.
My academics:-
B.Sc (Physics) - 74 %
GNIIT - 88%
Extra curricular activities :-
1. Associated with Street Kids forum
2. Photography (Wild life)
3. Shuttle and Ping pong.
I would like to know what my chances are realistically to join a reasonably good school. Also am not sure if GNIIT is considered by US and Canadian schools.
Thanks,
Govind
Gaurav,
Your accomodation would be sorted out only if you restrict yourself to b-schools in NY. In case, you go to Harvard/ Wharton, you'd still be 5 hours either direction from NY - so no chance to save still
.
You can apply to NY based bschools like NYU Stern/ Columbia BS.
3 years of Bachelor's is accepted by most b-schools.

Hello MBA Decoder
I wish to get into Corporate Finance, M&A;, PE posy my MBA. Any suggestions with B-schools?
Hi,
I just took the GMAT to get it out if my way, only to find later that institutes such as SP jain and Great Lakes accept its score. I was expecting around 700 but not above 750. Now I've got 770 miraculously. So now I'm kind of confused. Should I wait 2 years, get some work experience and apply to Ivy league schools?( I am in the final year of B.Tech CSE) Or should I just try for reputed institutes such as SP jain etc. this year itself.
I know the decision pretty much depends upon whether I want to go international or not and financial constraints but I am more concerned with the KIND of work ex. Could someone guide me as to what kind of companies should I apply for which can give me an edge for international schools? For example, product based companies have little communication intensive work and do not give one an edge. I would like something which puts me in an IT marketing kind of role. No such companies come to my campus, and I would be applying for off campus jobs only! Please suggest such jobs if possible. (I've heard that some consultancies hire you on the basis of your GMAT score?)
Also please tell me if there are any reputed institutes ( across the world) in which i can apply directly and get a regular/deferred admission.
Details- Good ECAs.
Academics- B.tech CSE 78%
Currently in final year.

Check out the top 10 (US b-schools) - while some like Booth, Wharton, CBS, HBS, Duke are specifically known for their Finance concentration, others are equally good.
