I am a working professional from Samsung (Mobile R&D; division - Bangalore).
I am looking for a brief guideline and profile assessment before applying to highly-esteemed international B-schools (which demand considerable amount of time as well as money).

It would be great if the experts suggest me schools which are best-fitted for my profile.
As I am new in the forum, please feel free to redirect my post to appropriate folder.

Work
I have been working in Samsung R&D; since July 2008. So, it would be 4-year experience on July, 2012. I am currently engaged in development of operating system or data-platform on 4G based mobile handsets for Samsung Electronics. Along with designing, coding and validating software for market-changing 4G smart phones, I am involved in mentoring new engineers, brain-storming for new technological advances and sharing my knowledge across Samsungs various software development centers.

International Exposure
I have been travelling to International R&D; locations of Samsung (in 1month 3months on a single trip 14 months on total) since the onset of Android based smart phone development work in Dec 2008. Samsung Head quarter at South Korea, Samsung Telecommunication centers at NJ, Seattle, Dallas and Alcatel Luscent Labs in NJ are the places, where I have interacted with different engineers and managers and coordinated as an experienced engineer of my module from Samsung India, Bangalore. Currently, I am working for another flagship product of Samsung with AT&T; and Samsung Telecommunication America, Dallas.

2) I am a part of SISO-Seva, which is another NPO that helps local orphanages in Bangalore.
3) I have offered free tuition when I was pursuing under-graduated education.

Goals As a working professional, who works on cutting-edge data-oriented 4G technology, and an open-eyed ambitious person, who takes interest on marketing acumen of several biggies and the start-up life-cycle of promising entrepreneurial ventures, I believe that MBA from the Ivy League schools can provide me the launch pad to try my dream plan. I have a long term goal of establishing world class online delivery system of grocery and beverages. I know that its an open category and inherits enormous challenges from established traditional players, but, with global knowledge, research oriented course-curriculum, risk-taking and bright business network, it can be highly possible to position a global brand of online delivery system.

Little bit more on my goal ->
I feel the online delivery system of grocery and beverage is not a disjoint dream in my case. I am working in 4G technology driven market of USA. I have found how people are using LTE data and how they are moving towards e-commerce. With the advent of 3G technologies, the economic trend of look-to-east and Indian consumers bolstered belief on e-commerce (thanks to FlipKart.com, JustDial.com, and Snapdeal.com), I can foresee the huge market where full retail system can run online. Instead of taking on biggies, I can establish a well-connected network of vendors, reliable vendor system and fast-customized-SEO oriented web-infrastructure to realize my dream. But, I need seed capital, investor base, understanding of data-metrics that can be provided by an internationally acclaimed b-school. ISB is my first choice as my target prospect is Indians. I have already applied to ISB. But, candidly speaking, with my low score (I heard 710 is low compared to the pool to which I belong), I have to keep my planB ready.
I believe ivy-league schools and INSEAD are the best brandings available in the market. I have keen interest in marketing. I have seen my father working as a sales executive, and I have worked in Multi-level networking business to help out my father to carry the expense of a joint family. What I have learned from there is the concept of Out-to-in thinking, and climbing up prospects mind. I have seen Samsung doing the same since I have joined SS in July 2008. In 2008, Nokia has a bragging market share of 60%, but with the aggressive marketing, customizing product to cater to any class citizen, forming a brand name in mobile market, SS has won the game, topping the US market. I want to nurture my interest in the old and globally-praised (Global sounds again in my writing because isnt that I look for? :-O ) B-schools. A challenging job in marketing can hone my acumen and make me more open to the market-structure. Definitely, my academics lean much towards the technical field; cant we expect a blend of analytical skill and marketing expertise?

You have a really cool profile ... If you draft your says well , ISB is certainly more than realistic:)

Hi guys,
I'm back after my GMAT and am slightly disappointed to be frank.
Here's my break up:
Overall score: 710
Quant: 50
Verbal: 36

As I mentioned before, I've been working at Infosys for the past 4 years and have a separate Internet venture with my friend that has done quite well in it's domain. I have also been involved in community service in various capacities since childhood.

I looked up a few schools and found that 710 would probably be good enough for the second rung schools like FUQUA, Anderson etc.
However I have to live with my Engineering percentage which was only 63%.

Do I stand a realistic chance of getting into any of these schools or should I write again? I do think I can crack 730, with concentrated efforts. I wish I don't have to write again though! :)
Have people belonging to the over populous IIM pool gotten through to such schools with such a track record? Also, would ISB be realistic? Looking forward to the same help you guys extended a few days back!

Cheers!

I am interested in doing MBA in Operations Management. I have the following queries;
1. Where do I stand, given my profile and GMAT score?
2. I am targeting Kelley(Indiana), Fisher(Ohio State), Georgia Tech, Univ of Wisconsin-Madison and Krannert(Purdue). What are my chances of getting admit to these schools? Also, what are my chances of getting a scholarship there?
3. If according to you I am not eligible for the above mentioned schools, then which other schools should I apply to for Operations Management? Is it worth doing my MBA from the 30-50th ranked schools?

Thank you.

Sirji, welcome back.

GMAT ki kahani khatam ho gayi. Put an end to the what-if analysis and move on now to the essay writing.

Focus on the brilliant things you did in your IT venture and at Infy. And all the nice things you plan to do during and after your MBA.

Adcoms will value that more than another 50-point jump in your GMAT score with nothing substantial to talk about in the other areas.

Quest123, Thanks for the detailed post...infact, by the end of it I forgot what your questions were.

SO my analysis is, that you have a great profile - doing cutting edge work and great acads. You should apply to the Ivy leagues and more (Stanford). You can make up for a low GMAT through an effective essay strategy - demonstrate good analytical & communication skills (that will also help make up for a low verbal GMAT score). You need to tie your venture story very well with your hi-tech experience inorder that it does not sound like a business idea just off your head.

Definitely, my academics lean much towards the technical field; cant we expect a blend of analytical skill and marketing expertise?

That's what b-schools are there to teach you - give you a business perspective in addition to your functional expertise.

Hi,
Could you please help me by what latest time should i give the GMAT exam, so that i am eligible for spring-2012 intake at different universities.
TIA.

smashsmash,
give GMAT when you are most ready to take it and before the submission deadlines of the b-schools you are planning to apply to - in most b-schools, you can self report your scores. Despite this, you should check the FAQ sections of their websites to read their score submitting policies.

Love all around,

Having patience always pays well. its not usually the case that an Admissions consultant will be logged in for 24 hours to shoot off prompt replies minute by minute.

Most b-schools don't REQUIRE a work exp. but would rarely take you in without any, unless you are exceptional

I have work exp of 1.5 yr as a trainee at hero honda during my college days and 3 month exp with UNESCO-INRULED as a Research assistant for the preparation of a report. Both exp i think will consider as part time but will universities accept this if I get good score in GMAT and TOEFL?

Hi Dhwani - keep your head down and focus on getting as high a score you can get. If I write 680 or 720 - it would matter little as you would still try to get as high a score as possible.

However if you still want me to quote a number You have a terrific background and I think a 700+ will seal the deal for most top schools.

and will my work experience with my dad's own financial service firm would be a a disadvantage as it is not a brand name.

Bluechip brand helps but you can spin your story in a different way - schools love entrepreneurial stories such as going back to expand your dad's business. So don't bother.

Can you please tell me which all school should I apply to if i get a decent score.

Tough question as it depends on many things - any top 20 school in the US should be competitive for you.

And also am I too late for fall 2012 application. Is applying in round 2 a disadvantage?

If you have a clear idea of the basics (your short-term/long-term goals, why mba, why xyz school, why you, why now etc) and which schools to apply then you can even apply R1. However if you want more time then perhaps R2 is better. Since you don't have much choice don't bother - go ahead and apply to where it is possible.

Post MBA I would like to get into Private Equity or Valuations or Start something of my own.

PE is a very tough space to get into in the US. Be careful on that part. However starting something on your own is ofcourse the easiest

If a school will accept a 420 GMAT score then it pretty much doesn't bother about what the scores are. So if you think you can improve your scores then my recommendation is to retake it.

Your experience, undergraduate, and GMAT should be commensurate for your target schools. Don't worry.

Scholarships will be tough to come by in these places. So don't bank on that for your finances.
