Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

Hi,

GMAT : Expected 720+. got a paltry 690:banghead::banghead::banghead:

I plan to go for another MBA (US Top 20) next year . Please suggest if US top 20 are possible with such score or should in take the test again. I believe i can improve a lot.

Also suggest few schools in europe that i can look at. The current economic situation in europe is dissuading though. I am looking at Finance specialization

With a 690 its going to be very tough for a US top 20 Bschool. Maybe 15-20 but not above that.

Retake only if it is possible for you to realistically improve your score. Even by say 20-30 points.

In Europe there are many top schools where you can apply if your GMAT scores improve a bit. In the UK you can look at schools such as Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, and Cranfield. For continental Europe you have the schools in Spain and France.

I am planning to apply 4 2012 intake
colleges shortlisted
tepper
johnson - cornell
fuqua-duke
uva - darden
ucla

Could you pls suggest some other "safe schools" or is the list a lill too ambitious??

More interested in specializing for entrepreneurship or stratregy...

With a 690 - you are really pushing your luck with the schools. They traditionally have a very high GMAT score. Just check the top 15 school's average GMAT here:
http://www.crackverbal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/schoolscores.bmp

Any school where your GMAT is about 20 points above the average for the school should be in the "safe" category.

INSEAD for Europe

For the US b-schools, I am posting a link of the top 10 US b-schools in entrepreneurship.

I think writing a good application with logical career progression path, including career goals, good achievements/ strengths stories etc. will help you more than retaking the GMAT at this stage.

  1. Hi,

My queries and concerns are pretty much the same as others on this forum. I would like to get my candidature evaluated for ISB 2012.

My profile goes like this :

    Undergrad - IIT CGPA (7.80 )
    10th - 82%
    12th - 90%

    GMAT - 720 AWA 4.5

Currently I have more than 2 years of work experience and by april 2012 i would be having nearly 2 years and 9 months of experience.

I have been working at as Senior business analyst at a business analytic's firm. I performance has been fairly good and has been highly recognized in my organization. I also received some awards recognizing the same.

Worked for a start up for more than a year before during my graduation days.

Extra curricular: Moderate amount of extra curricular activities. Won couple of quizzes at state level during schooling. Organized events during the college. Also a part of the company CSR.

So what chances do i stand for this year's candidature for ISB and if the chances are moderate, How can i enhance my profile.

Do i need to retake GMAT to increase the strength of my profile.

    Many thanks !!

MBA in : management Consulting.
I think I will give my best shot at essays.

Shortlisted Schools: ISB, INSEAD, LBS(not completely sure), Columbia, Sloan, Fuqua, Haas, Tepper

All said, I have these questions:
1)Is my profile, to apply for 2012 fall, competitive enough for these schools? Please suggest any school which I should remove/put in my list.
2)I have a chance to go to US for working six months there and also I would surely have many good things to add to my profile by next year(to apply for 2013 Fall), like being a Community Hero-Volunteer of the year for my Company, so should I prefer to differ my applications for another year for a better shot at these schools?
3)If I should cut short the list of schools from the above list to four(due to time limitation) what would you suggest? Please advice considering just the chances.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Matrix,

You have a good profile & you should apply to ISB. Your GMAT scores are good, so don't think about retaking. However I hope your Verbal scores make up for an average AWA.

If you are thinking of applying for the Nov 30th deadline to ISB, then there is nothing you can do to enhance your profile (which is good).
Put in your best effort in the application, which means having logical career goals, well chosen and well written achievement stories and a 3rd essay which gives a balanced and completes picture of your personality to the adcom.

MBA-ian...hmmm that's a new one. Will add this to my shabd-kosh for future reference.

If you don't mind, I'd like to make the question a little broader. MBA karke kya karne ka plan hai?

Seems like you engineering stint has become a rollercoaster ride for the wrong reasons. Not sure if you'd want to go extend the torture now with an MBA.

Being successful in business and excelling in academics are completely disconnected. So a good first step for you would be to figure out what professional area you want to get into after your MBA.

If you are considering the MBA degree an end in itself, that would be the wrong approach, sirji.

Think of options that make the need for another degree redundant.

I am primarily looking at top twenty bchools in the world (ft rankings) so mainly US and Europe. In terms of MBA majors, i am a sales and marketing person, i have grown in my four years of work ex in this function and would like to continue to grow in the same... hence i dont need a school which is good when u need to change industry.. but what i do need is a school which can give a good package increment.
A college with good placements for marketing profile is always welcomed. 😁

Hi MBA Help,

could u please throw some light on studying MBA in canada ?

How will be the scope n oppurtunities ?

I.......................................

MBA-ian...hmmm that's a new one. Will add this to my shabd-kosh for future reference.

well sameer...
1 reason i want to do MBA is that i know i am good in convincing , i like meeting people
have good PR skills..now thats not the question i know i want to do it ..and i am gonna work hard to achive it beacuse i know what profile i ll be given once i ll complete it..while i was pursuing engg i always knew that i am gonna land no where as i am wasting my time doing it...may be its possible this thought of mine was responsible for flunking..now here is a different case .. i know i want to do MBA..
2nd reason is that i dont find anyother programme which i am interested in other than being a Doctor which i wanted to become in earlier days and was forced to opt for engg...

3 am looking forward to an MBA in :
a ) Marketting
b ) Media & Entertainment
c ) Telecom ( coz that was the only subject i liked in engg, and i have sound knowledge)

so , if you can help me out regarding the colleges , how to apply ..n pre-requisites, knowing my background

i ll be very thankful to you...i can do whatever it takes but i cant change what happened...coz that just happened...past...
well sameer...
..and i am gonna work hard to achive it beacuse i know what profile i ll be given once i ll complete it..

Good to see the resolve and the dedication, buddy.

while i was pursuing engg i always knew that i am gonna land no where as i am wasting my time doing it...may be its possible this thought of mine was responsible for flunking..
I'm not sure if that line of argument would convince the Adcoms of the top schools. Let me explain why.

Consider the case of IIT grads who crack the JEE and still don't get the discipline of their choice. e.g. if they really REALLY wanted Computer Science, but they got Mining. They don't give up. They still go ahead and complete the course.

Then after graduation most of them join companies that have nothing to do with their engineering specialisation.

so , if you can help me out regarding the colleges , how to apply ..n pre-requisites, knowing my background
There may be several colleges who wouldn't care about what's happened in the past and still take you. But I'd say, be careful with those.

i ll be very thankful to you...i can do whatever it takes but i cant change what happened...
If you really want to know my thoughts, I'd say rather than jumping into an MBA degree, get into a job that involves people, negotiating...and anything else that you really enjoy. If the salary is pathetic, don't worry about it.

Spend a couple of years in the field and show that you can deliver. When you are dealing with people, in most cases they will not ask you for your degree. Go ahead and knock their pants off (excuse my language) with your convincing skills. That's what I meant by making an MBA degree irrelevant.

After that if you still want to go ahead, then you'd have something that balances out the low undergrad grades - solid real world experience and a proven knack for business.

It is not about what cards get dealt out to you. It's about what you do with those cards.

Hello,

I have been a silent member of this forum which has been a great help for me in my prep.

Yesterday, I gave my Gmat and got 680 (Q=49, V=32). I gave it without giving a single full length practice test since could not get time with family, an active job and free-lancing work.
Here is my brief profile:

Gmat: 680 (Q=49, V32) Awa expected around 5.5
Qualification: B.E (DCE), MTECT (IIT-D) computer sc.
Work exp: 10 years in R&D; in Telecom sector
Publications and Patents: 18 papers and 2 copyrights
International Exposure : Many small trips to US/UK during work
Associated with 2 NGO actively
Good track record throughout career.

I plan to apply in one year full time executive MBA in these colleges:

IIM-Bangalore
IIM-Noida
ISB
IE, Spain
Melbourne Business School, Australia
Insead, Singapore
London School of Business
Said, Oxford
IMD, SWZ

Will this score be sufficient to sail through?

Thanks for going through my post,

Nikhil

quote " Consider the case of IIT grads who crack the JEE and still don't get the discipline of their choice. e.g. if they really REALLY wanted Computer Science, but they got Mining. They don't give up. They still go ahead and complete the course. "

well i suppose the IIT ian who cracks a JEE and enters into an IIT at least knows that hes gonna end up being an engg, specialisaion as a mater of fact is alltogether a different ball game...

Quote "There may be several colleges who wouldn't care about what's happened in the past and still take you. But I'd say, be careful with those. "

do you imply that i cant apply to any good college in this whole world even if i get a good score in gmat or IELTS...

Quote " If you really want to know my thoughts, I'd say rather than jumping into an MBA degree, get into a job that involves people, negotiating...and anything else that you really enjoy. If the salary is pathetic, don't worry about it. "

well i totally agree with this , as i have done things like that i was a head of a sponsorship committee, team leader in the college..while i was pursuing engg i was offered jobs in marketting and all.. i know i am good at it...

NOW,
the question is even if i join a organisation in which i can prove my metal, what do i need to do .. should i also start preparing for gmat or it isnt worth coz my track record is not that good...what exaxctly i shuld do , if i know i want to go for MBA..no second thought ...

thanks.
