jithun SaysOne simple question - Does it make a difference applying early to a B school?
Jithun, for most b-schools applying in Round 1 or 2 is the same. A good strategy is to phase your applications across both rounds, i.e. if you are planning to apply to 5-6 b-schools, it becomes difficult to apply to all in the same round. Writing essays is a time taking process, and you can expect your work/ family committments eating into the time you have set aside for the applications..

Hello Consultants,
I am a Software Engineer. I carry an experience of 3 years and have been working with iGate Patni for the past 1 year. I have just started researching about GMAT.
Could you please suggest a good GMAT coaching institute in Ahmedabad ?
Are there better chances of getting thru if one applies in R1 than in R2 ?
Also, with new GMAT changes due June 2012, should I be taking GMAT before or after June 2012 ?
Thanks,
geekarati,
Can't comment on the GMAT centres in Ahmedabad, because I am not aware of the institutes there...you could look up on the GMAT specific threads on PG.
I have answered another query about R1 v/s R2, just above yours- you can check that out.
Taking GMAT now or later - there's always a fear of the unseen. You know what the GMAT test looks like right now and can prepare yourself for it accordingly. So unless you are up for the challenge of a answering a new section that is being integrated into the GMAT, head for it before June.

Hi,
I want to do an MBA from a top B-School, not necessarily harvard/duke sorts but maybe from top 75 of the world (in any case they are better than the IIMs, the best here). But the most important and only thing stopping me from even researching these schools is the huge finances required. I haven't taken the GMAT yet coz GMAT itself takes Rs.12K, then there is toefl and the individual application fees of the institutions. I'm not sure of taking a HUGE (and complete tuition fee) loan at the start of my career esp. when the job scenario is gloomy there (studying there and coming back for a job is pointless). It will take approx Rs. 60K (minimum) to apply to max 3 schools (please rectify if I'm wrong). Hence, the dilemma.
Now, please evaluate the profile.
10th: 85.5%
12th: 82.25%
B.Tech: 75.16% completed in 2010
Work ex: 1 yr exact in an Indian IT MNC, typical software job with months of bench.
(but then how are they gonna know about it. I know most schools require a min of 3 yrs, but there are many who state even freshers are admitted and I know many with ECA: prefect at school, medals in sports at school level, debates, painting competitions, essay competition wins, etc, certificate of merit for the par-excellence contri to school, actively involved in the various societies at college, debates contd here as well, part of organising committee (publicity/mkting) of our 2nd tech fest.
Now, do i stand a chance in any of the good b-schools of the world, or should I just gamble my 60K.
Thanx!
hi sameer, you posts are very informative .i would like to know if aim taking GMAT by may 2012 then should i buy kaplan,MGMAt,GMAT prep books now or by jan 2012

Hi Sameer,
Greetings!!
I have a very unique query. It would be great if you could give me some advise.
My education is as below:
Class X -
Diploma in Engg - 3 years
Graduation - 3 years
I have about 5 years of experience in IT as a System Architect.
I am planning to take GMAT around April 2012
I understand that the 16 years of edcutaion should be fine but will this job experience be considered valid by B schools as my job is on the basis of my education in Diploma in Engg?
Thanks in advance!
ankit636 Sayshi sameer, you posts are very informative.
Shukriya Ankit-ji.
to get atleast 780 score in GMAT.ie the most recommended books. Here's someone who talks about how he got a GMAT score of 780. Of course, that approach may not work for you. The idea is to create a personalised approach that works for you.
But don't you think you are being a little too tough on yourself?
In the bigger scheme of things, a 780 won't achieve much if the rest of your profile isn't as strong. Don't invest all your energy into just one component.
Holistic approach, bhratashri, is the name of the game.

If the experience has been on a full-time basis, you were getting a salary and you were causing as much pain to your bosses and clients as anybody else in a comparable role, then I'd say there's no reason why it shouldn't be considered on par with others with similar work-ex.
If you bring out the accomplishments in your application and demonstrate that you've done more than your peers, you'd get credit for it.
- More pain?

Yes, the experience is full time along with full time gradutaion.
Would B schools count the full time experience along with full time eductaion?
Hi Consultants
Could you give me the list of Top B schools in the world (including US) which are best in Technology/IT/Innovation Management concentration. A list of top 10 if possible
Thanks

When we are asked to write professional achivements in an essay then we need to mention achievements in of our professional life only? i mean can we mention something we achived in college life or it has to be strictly from our work experience?
not necessarily harvard/duke sorts but maybe from top 75 of the world (in any case they are better than the IIMs, the best here).
Ewwreka, check out the FT MBA rankings for how the IIM A and ISB are placed (quite on top):
http://rankings.ft.com/exportranking/global-mba-rankings-2011/pdf
I haven't taken the GMAT yet coz GMAT itself takes Rs.12K
That's a wise decision- you should be 100% sure that you want to get back to studying before you start investing in the costly tests, only to realize later that you never wanted a degree with those tests. Once you decide in favor of taking them, you can study for 3-4 months and take them anytime.
Work ex: 1 yr exact in an Indian IT MNC, typical software job with months of bench.(but then how are they gonna know about it.
With a one year experience under your belt, you can explore Masters in Management courses at b-schools (LBS / IE), which are specifically designed for applicants with 0-2 years work exp. Having said that, I think at this time you need some introspection about your career more than an MBA.
Do some thinking about your career expectations for the next 2-3 years and how you can reach there. Will your situation improve if you are to get a job with another company or maybe the benh-period wil pass soon? Will an MBA take your career where you see it a few years later? Clarity on these issues will help you decide your next steps.

psethi,
If the essay question says professional achievements, then definately you can not write academic achievements- not understanding the question and giving a wrong response can cost you dearly. Adcoms want to hear about your professional achievements to gauge your strengths/ skills in a professionsl environment and hence the question.

I would think so, Dipss. That's one of the main reasons why folks with 'zero' (in formal terms) experience get into top schools, as they've done something significant (e.g. entrepreneurship) along with their studies that more than compensates for the conventional 9-5 experience.
But do reach out to the schools (a short email will help) and get it verified, as individual policies and guidelines may differ.

gmatgmat40 SaysIn MBA admission essays , is it a good idea to include name of real time customers of the company I work for ? For example if I work for Intel is it a good idea to mention Dell or HP in my essays ?
This is entirely your decision. You could base it on certain factors like: 1. are their names important to your story or is it just for name dropping, 2. does your company have a privacy agreement with the clients (hopefully you are not breaching it), 3. Will your recommenders, if they are current supervisors, be okay with you mentioning these details about real time projects?

Hello Consultants,
I have the same query as jithun, just that I'm targeting the APAC region for next year's intake.
My profile is:
10th: 81%
12th: 64%

Engg: 61%
Currently I have 40 months of work experience in IT Service Management. Post MBA I would like to get into IT Management.
I have heard that ISB is right up there for getting into IT consulting.
Could you please let me know some of the top schools in South East Asia/Australia renowned for Technology/IT/IS specialization.
Many Thanks.
