Hi

Firstly, This is my first message on pagalguy.

Anyway I'm planning to apply for Fall 2012 to USA for a MBA. I have a GMAT score of 660, good academics, 2yrs work ex., decent ECA and community service experience.I have also taken up the services of a counselor, ********, to help me with my applications.

I have a dilemma which needs to be sorted. I graduated in B.M.S, so I possess a mere 15 yrs of education. Before going up to the counselor, I had applied for M.COM Part 1 as I had learnt from many people that most universities in USA require 16 yrs of education. But now my counselor says M.COM Part 1 is not valid. Could you please tell me if only M.COM Part 1 is acceptable, because I'm getting varied answers?

Also my counselor suggests William & Mary, Temple, Thunderbird, Wake Forest, TAMU, Fordham, CUNY Brach, USC Moore, Hofstra, Pitt Katz, SMU Cox, Suffolk, Clark and Rochester. Are these universities good enough? You think I can do better?

Hope you will address my queries at the earliest.

Thank you.

Regards,
Trasha.

I have not spent a single summer after the age of 14 free.

Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. My feeling is, you've got your whole life to work, make money and become famous. Sacrificing the teenage years to accelerate the process may not be really worth it.

But if you did all of that out of passion rather than out of compulsion, then we've got another story.

The reason for me to hurry for my MBA is:
:
As you can see my company is taking off, and so it's now or never really, as there is not much scope for me to be able to take any time off in the future. Also, I am the only heir to a vast array of companies with interest in Education,Salt,Hospitality and Stock broking, and my father's health is not at its best and is failing. So I must take over as soon as possible.
Shah bhai, your story is one of those that make me think - this dude doesn't need an MBA at all. You are learning much more in your current role than an MBA can ever teach you.

If you've got the feeling that you are running short on time, then there's another reason why you should not spend 2 more years of your life there, unless you want to slow down the pace.

If your primary reason to pursue an MBA is to infuse marketing, strategy, finance skills in your various companies, I'd say a faster and better RoI option would be for you to recruit a few top MBAs and make them work for you.

In the future when you have more breathing space and having a top MBA is still a priority, you can think about it then.

Either ways, take it easy and don't burn yourself out by the time you are 25.

Hey Sameer,
thank you for taking some time and responding.

Well I've honestly kept myself busy from so young just because I have always being intrigued of how businesses work and have always been looking at gaining experiences which could help me in future as being an entrepreneur has been my goal all along.

Well coming to the question, "Why MBA" well the answer is simple,

working day to day I realized I have made certain mistakes which have cost me dearly and I would'nt have done so had I known better, practical experience teaches you a great deal not doubt but then a certain amount of quantitative and theoretical knowledge is required to cross the bridge

And I've being specially lacking in my quantitative ability.

Also given that soon I will need to manage on a more larger level, I want to equip myself with the skills required so that I can be sure of what i'm doing and not repeat the same mistakes.

Basically do the same things, better.

I absolutely second Sameer, shah , u do not need an MBA .....

Trasha,

All b-schools have their own criteria for considering the 3 year Indian graduate degree as a qualification or not. The best way to know is to check the Admissions FAQ of your target b-schools' websites or shoot an email to admissions office. In any case b- schools change their policies about this rule - so you will get the most reliable information from the b-school itself.

Regarding the choice of b-schools, you fall in easy GMAT range of most of these, that's why they have been selected. I would reconsider Clark and Hofstra though.

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. I have also recently considered a few more universities like University of N. Carolina, Michigan Ross, Tuck, Emory, Stern, Indiana, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Psu, Purdue and Ohio fisher. Are these options worth a try, since I'm having a low GMAT score.

Also I would like to know if the universities first shortlist on basis of GMAT and then consider the profile. I'm having a slight difficulty making a call on my universities since there are too many options like quality of pedagogy, job opportunities involved. It would be nice of you to help me out further.

Thank you again for the valuable time you put in to solve my queries.

sales, marketing, strategy or finance are different functions in an organization - involving different roles and responsibilities and skills. You should have a fair idea about what you want to get into - the best way to do this is by talking to various people in these functions, understand their roles, their career paths and likely career progression for the future. Then analzye which function/roles excite you and you would like to do them in the future. You could also seek opportunities within your organization, to get some experience of working in these roles to get better understanding.
B-schools require that you have some clarity of your career goals before you get into the program so that you can best use your 2 years to move with some direction.

I would be happy if someone could explain how MBA-Information systems could help me in this regard. or else if any other specialization would help me do it better.

Information Systems is good for people who want to work in the business side of IT - so you will learn business skills as well as strengthen your technology base. You could check out the MIS programs by HBS, Carnegie Mellon - Tepper, Kelley Business School, MIT, Emory Goizueta.

Trasha, limit yourself to applying to 5-7 programs at max - in one application cycle, you can not do justice to more applications than these.
You can base your selection criteria on:
1. the feel you get about a b-school after reading about it through website/ blogs/ You tube videos - do you think you want to spend two years there?
2. Electives- if there are particular electives/ concentrations/ career tracks you are interested in and the program offers those.
3. any particular companies that you want to join and they recruit there.
4. You GMAT scores are reasonably placed in the 20-80% GMAT range (your earlier list had too many of the safety schools)
5. check on the 15 years acads eligibility criteria.

GMAT is one among the deciding factor for admission - You can compensate it by having other stronger parts in the application, esp. the essays. So, unless you want to aim for higher ranked b-schools and retake GMAT, don't fret too much about this - and start putting together a great application to show a great profile.

The GMAT section's been growing rapidly over the past few years but I'm sure you already know that. Unfortunately, it's becoming tougher for individual contributors to keep pace. Fortunately, a lot of consultants have been coming up to help! So as a gesture to them and to every aspirant seeking advice, we have the brand new " Ask A Consultant" thread!!! where you ask and a consultant replies!

Ground rules for Consultants:
0. PG reserves the right to refuse Consultants.
1. Please email [email protected] with relevant information about your organziation. Info should include a contact number where PG can reach you. Consultants posting without this info will be banned from the forum!
2. Consultants found prospecting will be banned. You cannot send out a PM; the student has to contact you first.
3. No "Please contact me via PM" in your posts.
4. No bad mouthing other consultants or their advice.
5. Please introduce yourself/your org in this thread and then carry the link to that post in your signature.

Ground rules for Students:
1. Do not bad-mouth the consultants if they are late in replying. People offer help for free here. Understand that they are busy and appreciate that they are taking time out of their busy schedules to help you. If you have posted, please have some patience! Somebody will reply and not always at the speed you want.
2. Do not wait for multiple consultants to reply to your post. You could be lucky and many will be reply, or only one will. Either way, make the most of it.
3. Report prospecting PMs from Consultants.
4.Please note that this is for International MBA and GMAT only NOT for Indian B-schools via CAT

Additional Rules to follow as time goes on

Pre-Consulting Advice for Students from Consultants:
1. We cannot comment without knowing your GMAT score. Even if you think you are going to do well - its not over till the fat lady sings.
2. You need to provide specific information related to your work experience. Indian IT Engineer working for a large MNC is not enough.
3. Specific preferences related to rankings, geography, and specialization. This in turn should be tied to your overall goal of an MBA i.e. what career path you want to choose post the degree.

Edit: Added pre-consulting Advice

Hi Oblix,

Small point. I saw that you've posted the same query on another forum. Ironically, it was just 2 posts below mine where I've pointed out to others that they've been posting on the wrong thread. I didn't respond to it there. Par iss site par sab apne log hai, so I'll be a little more upfront about it.

The expectation is that people (specifically the new joinees) who are posting, spend some time reading a few posts, so the folks evaluating the post feel confident that candidates have done their research.

Same principle applies to bschool applications as well.

On the face of it, all that you've mentioned - GMAT, undergrad qualification, experience - seems perfectly fine and you'd have been competitive at each of the schools you applied to. But the results haven't been as expected.

Maybe there's no connection between the two stories and without knowing the nuances I might be connecting the wrong dots here. But do think about what might have gone wrong with the earlier applications rather than continuing with the same approach.

Good luck with the schools where you are still waiting for a response or planning to apply.

Hello Consultants,

I am a Software Engineer. I carry an experience of 3 years and have been working with iGate Patni for the past 1 year. I have just started researching about GMAT.

Could you please suggest a good GMAT coaching institute in Ahmedabad ?

Are there better chances of getting thru if one applies in R1 than in R2 ?

Also, with new GMAT changes due June 2012, should I be taking GMAT before or after June 2012 ?

Thanks,

Chaith 82, IIMs expect an average age of around 27 years and work exp. of 7 years, with a graduate degree. So your stats fall in place for their reqyuriements...you can look up their websites - this info is very clearly mentined there for each b-school.
