Hi Everyone,
This is my first post in PagalGuy.com.
I am interested in doing a 1 year MBA abroad. One target school I have in mind is INSEAD.
My Profile:
Work Ex: 56+ months till date...
Roles Played: Business Analyst/Consultant, Project Lead in Leading IT companies. Managed both project delivery and clients.
Overall good work-ex with tangible achievements to showcase in my application.
Confident of getting pretty great recos.
Aiming to take GMAT in June/July 2011 and aiming for the Sep 2012 intake.
Had got 94 and 96 percentiles in CAT and XAT respectively in 2004. My percentiles were pulled down due to low quant scores. My verbal scores were very good.
Since GMAT quant, from wht I hv seen, is not as tough, and verbal is tougher, expecting better percentiles.
Acads:
PGDBM from GIM (2006 passout) - CQPI 5.14 out of 8 (slightly above avg)
BCA from Univ. of Madras - 74%
Class 12 CBSE - 74%
Class 10 CBSE - 76%
Extra Curriculars - Nothing much here...
Reason for (2nd) MBA- Change of Industry - Want to move out of IT Consulting and into Management Consulting.
Questions:
1. What places other than INSEAD should I look at? I'm only interested if I can get into a top b-school (since I'm doing pretty ok in my present career, woudnt want to get into a not-so-great B-school), and only for a 1 year program, that can help in switching to a management consulting career.
2. What should be my target GMAT score, given my profile and target school(s).
3. How can I get more info in the schools and their uniquenesses? I've already seen the school websites... I need something more real and substantive, if you know what I mean...
Any other advice/info that you think would be important for me?
Thanks for any help in advance,
Rahul
P.S. For a newcomer, the number of forums and the information available here is overwhelming. Please do let me know if there is a thread going on somewhere that would be helpful to me.
Hello Friends,
I took GMAT a few days back and here is my profile for your assessment. Please be frank in providing opinion. Is it worth a shot for Indian Univs -the IIM's and ISB. I am only interested in 1 year programs. Your insights will surely be helpful!
Academics:
GMAT 690(Q48, V35 Total 88%), AWA: 5.5
10th 78% (CBSE Board) , 12th -83% (CBSE Board)
B.Tech (IT) from Kurukshetra University in year 2004. (Percentage -70%, Branch Topper -83%).
Professional:
7 years core experience in one of the leading IT company.
International exposure (Chicago, U.S) for about 3 years.
Experience of working with clients like GE
Has experience of working in Mortgage and Retail domain related projects.
Extra-Curricular:
.State level Chess champion. Won chess championships for record 3 years during college
.One of the main organizer of the yearly cultural event in the organization and at college level. Acknowledged for methodical and successful management.
Won several accolades from school to this level in Literary and Debating events, Quizzing and in various sports events.
Interested Institutes:
IIMA, ISB, IIMB and INSEAD
Questions:
a) Which schools should I apply to?
b) When should I apply?
c) I do not know which MBA program is right for me. As, currently, a part of consulting firm, will "Consulting" be right?
d)Due to strict immigration laws in Europe, can there be problems in getting right opportunities, if I do MBA from INSEAD or other MBA school from Europe.
e) I am interested in 1 year MBA program. Is that OK?
Note: As I am newbie and just started to pursue my MBA dream, questions above could be little dumb. But thanks in advance for your solid response

If you are looking for one year programs, Emory in US has a good program, Richard Ivey & Queen's in Canada have good programs as well. ISB is definitely worth a shot as its the best bang for your buck, especially if you want to work in India. I am not well acquainted with IIM's one year programs, I am sure someone could throw some light on that school...
Hello
I am in a unique situation and at my wits end. Would appreciate advice and Chanakya-Niti type strategies from the Gurus amongst you.
MY PROFILE:
Education:
- XII from a top CBSE school (80%+ in all years)
- Did 2 IT programming diplomas (3 years total). Not a proper Bachelor's degree
- Currently about to complete Zend PhP Certification
- Recent GMAT: 620
- Recent IELTS Academic: 8.5
Work-Ex:
Worked as a Marketing Manager for an MNC (2 years)
Worked as a Branch head (2 years) for an Indian IT giant
Started my own IT company, created an overseas customer base and am still the CEO (13 years)
TARGET:
- To grow my business management skills and apply them beyond an SME scenario.
- Experience the work environment outside India.
PLAN:
- Do MBA from abroad and work outside India for a couple of years atleast
- If possible, during that 3-year period retain valuable existing clients by outsourcing projects to other Indian IT companies
SITUATION:
A) UK
On the strength of my vast experience and business achievements (also perhaps GMAT, IELTS, Diplomas, Interview), I have offers/admits from 2 UK B-Schools ranked in the World-top-100 by FT, Economist and Guardian.
Since the PSW Visa has just been canceled, the only way to apply the skills enhanced by MBA in an international work environment, is to complete the MBA and then apply for PR / Job in Canada/USA.
B) Canada & USA
The 5 Canadian B-Schools in World-top-100 and a couple of USA ones, have informed me that since I have more than 15 years work experience, I can only apply for eMBA. However, no Visa is available for this because it is a part-time program.
There are 3-4 B-Schools in Canada that are not very highly ranked who may accept me for MBA.
QUERIES:
1. Now that UK PSW has been canceled, does it make sense to still do an MBA from a good B-school in UK and then try for a job in Canada or USA? Or maybe apply for a Canadian PR as soon as I reach UK?
2. Does an MBA from a School ranked in top 100 in UK brighten my chance of a good job in Canada or USA?
3. Or is it better to do MBA from a mid-level Canadian B-School and compete for a great job with people passing out from well ranked Canadian universities?
4. Should I be looking at other destinations like Norway, Ireland, Belgium?
5. Am I going crazy and looking at the wrong end of the horse?
All suggestions and brainstorms are welcome.
- Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this long post. More thanks for replying though.
Dear Sir,
I have a question about admission to ISB. I have a work experience of 2 years in a Computer Hardware product company in US (2.5 yrs by Sept this year) and a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from a Top-10 US University degree. Would my MS degree make up for the relatively shorter duration of work experience?
My profile
BTech Computer Engineering from a National Institute of Technology - GPA 8.3/10
Master of Science in Computer Science from US University - GPA 3.35/4
Work Experience of 2 years in US
GMAT 750/6.0 AWA
Do you think this is a competitive profile for applying this year in R1?
thank you very much,
IndigoIntention
Can some of the gurus please evaluate?
thanks
Can some of the gurus please evaluate?

excellent chance to get into top 10. best of luck!
My profile:
Workex: 6 yrs + excellent Workex with an IT Consulting company. Have worked across the SDLC framework and have knowledge of all cycles of software development and maintainence. So qualitatively it covers a big chunk of the software industry.
GMAT: 690 (Q 47 / V 37) Not a score to rave about but I am happy that it was done under a crushing schedule and I won't retake the GMAT either.
Acads: Graduate: B.E. (Electronics), Pune Uni, Distinction(70%)
Xth: 85%.
XIIth: 84%
Need guidance on my options considering I am either looking for a course in IT Management or a strong course in Sales and Marketing. This is a crucial point in my career as whatever I choose now will dictate what I do for the next 10-15 years.:cheerio:
Very cliche to ask the very same question but can't help to be generalized. here it goes..
B.E. Electronics Engg - 59% (yup its a drag) Mumbai Univ
Work ex - 2.4 years

Kikonic SaysI record and compose original music for small time movies and stuff.
Were you connected in anyway with the super-duper hit 'Sania Mirza ki nathuniyaa'!
Kikonic Says~Could you kindly elaborate the pros and cons of post MBA job in consulting in a country like Netherlands where I am assuming the companies would hire Dutch speakers than us?
Consulting generally involves interacting with corporate folks. Even if you are working in a Dutch country the senior guys would understand English. But it always helps if you know the local language.
I worked in Brazil as a management consultant and I picked up a little bit of Portuguese - more for life outside office than inside.
Kikonic Says~what about schools in Spring? I know we don't get internship but any other suggestions or advice? ANy other schools in SPring to target besides these two maybe in Asia, US? (there is no website which provides any info about spring MBA!)
Check out INSEAD. It has 2 intakes.
Kikonic Says~IIM's only accept GMAT for foreigners or NRI's?? no info on how to submit GMAT in their website for indians!!
The 1-year programs at IIMs (like PGPX) accept GMAT. Scores are submitted directly by GMAC. ISB/IIMs will have an institution code that you select.

i'v got offer letter from below given universities:
1. UNIVERSITY OF CARDIFF
2. UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
3. UNIVERSITY OF BATH
Ezaz-bhai,
Mubarak ho. That's what I'd call a 'BACARDEE' Blast
The prob here with me is that i m confused abt the credentials of the universities. i m even worried abt the rankings and most importantly placements n all coz I've heard somewhere that its very difficult to get a job in India as Indian recruiters do not consider their degree as compared to Indian instutes ....(I have no work experience.)
I'll be very very thankful if anybody can help me with this asap....
I don't know much about these schools. But if you want to come back to India, these brands aren't that strong.
Also read up about the new study/work laws in the UK and then take a call. Without any work-ex, your journey becomes tougher, unless you have a family business to come back to.

I am getting tired of repeating this over and over again
PATIENCE!! Lots of the consultants here are volunteering their time. They are doing this for free which means they are taking time off from their day-to-day business to answer your queries. Do NOT expect a reply straightaway or even a day later. You cannot wait a couple of days?
If it has been longer than a week, PM me. Otherwise please wait. Or i will ban you for 2days.
I'd also like reiterate the points mentioned by Neo2000 in his introductory note (post 1 of this thread). Please read that before posting, if you haven't already.
Do provide us with some real content to work on. If you sound like you've done your basic research about the MBA application process, your queries will sound more credible.
If you really think about it, what we are doing here isn't too different from the real world bschool story. If you look, sound and come across as serious candidates for the top programs, admissions committees will take your application seriously.
Same thing applies to your queries to all the consultants on this thread. There's no obligation for us to respond to every single query that's posted here. Your chances of getting a response are higher if you keep the points mentioned above and by reviewing Neo's orig post.
Look at our interactions on this forum as a dry run. If consultants on this thread take your post seriously (because of what and how you've shared it), chances are Adcoms will too.

It will be really helpful if you or consultants can shed light on few more things....
What are an aspirant chances if he is not from IIMs..but an institute like

What are the things one should keep in mind during the two years of MBA so as to help me in getting into a good PHD program.......

What linkages one needs to develop ...
So far my search has resulted in following informations...

I am targeting top 20 US b-schools .
Hi Guys,
I've just given GMAT and would like to join an MBA program asap. the only options i can see few colleges in UK such as lancaster, manchester, imperial and cranfied. will you recommend waiting for next year and then taking a shot at my target schools - oxbridge, ISB and some us schools (yet to complete the research) - or try for these.
also, is it advisable to apply for cambridge 5th stage (may 16 is deadline)?
my profile 730/AWA 5.5/5.5 yrs/ IT with decent acads and extra curriculars.
Thanks

Niraj,
The trade-off that you speak of here is a very clear one unless you have strong reasons to do otherwise. The schools that you are talking of are in completely different league. So if you apply this year then you may notionally save an year but you may have to struggle a long while afterwards to reach where you could with the top tier schools. So if you believe that you have a good solid chance at the ISB/Oxford/Cambridge next year, I would strongly advice to work towards those.
Perhaps our inhouse Cambridge expert, Sameer could throw a bit more light on the 5th stage but personally I recommend giving it a shot - you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
Cheers!

Niraj,
You gotta decide what's more important to you, not losing another year (in which case go ahead and apply).
MG has gone with your 'join an MBA program asap' stand. The nothing-to-lose-and-a-lot-to-gain approach works for all schools in the later rounds when you are faced with time constraints.
But if you have the patience to wait (for the reasons that MG has already outlined), I'd suggest hanging on. Apart from your decent GMAT score, we don't know much about what makes you unique. But I hope you'd be able to go beyond what you've shared with us here and rise above the other applicants. And schools like Cambridge bank heavily on this aspect. It's a smaller batch and competition for every seat becomes super intense.

Hi Everyone,

Hi Rahul,
I like your post. Considering this is your first post on PG, it's well structured, you've done your homework well and provided enough info about your background and your motivations/objectives (withing the length constraints of a forum post), your queries are very specific and you sound mature in your overall approach.
A pleasure to address posts like these.
Ok, chaney ke jhaad se utar jao ab. Let's move to your queries.
Questions:
1. What places other than INSEAD should I look at? I'm only interested if I can get into a top b-school (since I'm doing pretty ok in my present career, woudnt want to get into a not-so-great B-school), and only for a 1 year program, that can help in switching to a management consulting career
You could also look at Oxbridge, LBS (not exactly a 1-yr program, but a good fit for your experience level/age) or if you have the inclination, any of the other non-UK options (IE, IESE, RSM etc)
rgd81 Says2. What should be my target GMAT score, given my profile and target school(s).
Some of the schools listed above don't require obscenely high GMAT scores, but as you have INSEAD on the list, I'd say aim for a 700-730 and you are in the running. No one will hold it against you if you score higher, though.
rgd81 Says3. How can I get more info in the schools and their uniquenesses? I've already seen the school websites... I need something more real and substantive, if you know what I mean...
Hmmm...the tricky one. You are right, all the websites appear the same.
Best way to find out the inside dope is to talk to people who are currently in the program or who've just gradudated. Official ambassadors for the school may not be as blunt with their opinions as the others. It'll require time and networking skills to do that. Another option is to talk to (good) consultants who can get you up to speed quickly and give you a flavour of each school's 'personality'. But it still helps if you follow that up with folks who are in or just out of the class.
rgd81 SaysAny other advice/info that you think would be important for me?
Yes. Continue this approach of being structured, yet succint and focussed in your applications and you'd do well.
Good luck with the GMAT. Come back and share your score with us. If you need help along the way, happy to help.

Thanks a lot, Sameer and MG. What I was really interested in finding out is what chances of getting scholarship do I have at this stage if I go for it.
For my applicaiton, I am counting on my international experience, performance at work (so good recos as well) and extra-curricular activities I've been involved in both college and corporate world.
Looking at some of the previous posts, I guess spring session at INSEAD can be an option. But that's again a very tough nut to crack.

:
:
As a general rule of thumb, extra years in the academic world will not replace real world experience.
But in your case, you do have work-ex, and it's what you've done in those 2.5 years that'll be important. Figure out a way to package that in your essays and highlight why ISB would be a good fit at this stage of your career.
Some general fundaes for others who are reading this.
Many candidates assume;
Packaging = nice flowery language + cliched business phrases
Don't fall for that. Keep it jargon-free and focus on the content. The most impactful essays we've seen are those that keep it simple and real.
