I am not sure if this is the right thread for my query, but it would be great if you could help me. I have been accepted for a one-year masters course at LSE. I am slightly confused about the Visa process. Could you throw some light on how I can go about applying for a UK Visa? I am given to understand that I should be applying for a Tier-4 students visa (I don't quite get the sponsorship bit). Do correct me if I am wrong. Thankyou.

If you are applying from India you have to apply through VFS Centre either individually or through an agent. You are the financial sponsor for yourself and have to submit your bank documents to VFS to get a visa. Yes, you are entitled to Tier4 General Student Visa.

Hi BL!!!

Im Sai... thanks fr ur helping hand!!!!

Can u comment on GMAT score expected from WBS?

and min work experience expected or relevant yrs needed 2 apply fr WBS??

Thank you for your reply.

Just out of curiosity. How is the job scene in UK this year? Especially after the revised work-permit visa policy. Also, do Consultancy firms like Mckinsey, BCG and Bain and company recruit from Warwick? Is Warwick a target school for IBs? Thankyou.

For Warwick,

GMAT:

for MBA - avg score of the class of 2010 was 680
for MSc programmes - not required, but preffered.

Work Experience:

for MBA - avg work experience of the class of 2010 was 7 years (below 3 yrs are not admitted)
for MSc Management - avg work experience of the class of 2010 was 1.2 years (above 2yrs are not admitted)
for other MSc programmes - avg work experience of the class of 2010 was around 2.5 years.
Thank you for your reply.

When you actually start studying at a b school, you will understand how difficult it is to answer a question like "job scene in the UK"! You need to specify which function, what industry and which course! But I do understand what every applicant from India goes through before boarding the Heathrow bound flight! I had been in your place and I will try to answer your query as best as I can, you might not like it though!:splat:

1. Job scene is not so bright in the UK for the international applicants. It doesn't matter which Uni you are studying at, your work authorization matters. If you are not a UK/EEA national and require a sponsored work permit to work legally in the UK, be ready to receive load of rejections and lots of hardwork!

2. A few of my friends from India have been able to get a job within UK in places like the Barclays Capital, Grant Thornton, Siemens, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, UBS and Goldman Sachs. So getting a job is very difficult but not impossible! You need to KNOW what to fill up in the application form and believe me its "not" a cakewalk!

3. I have no idea what is the revised visa policy of the UKBA. I have graduated and my student visa has expired now.

4. No Business School in the UK has campus placements. If you are going for MBA, you will be recruited through summer internship and if MSc then you have to reach out to recruiters on your own filling out employment forms. Of course the school will help you in preparing CVs, Coverletters and interview but their input is minimal, it will be you who will do the bulk work!

5. Warwick does have a big brand name in the Europe/UK but quality of a candidate speaks louder than the brand name. I clearly remember a Russian friend of mine from Warwick was rejected in the interview round by BCG. So will not say that Warwick is a "target school" for the Consultancies or IBs BUT a Warwick grad does have an unfair advantage of instant recognition in the job market.

Hope that helps. Cheers.

Answer 1: Its not possible to give you a number on expenses you may incur since course fees differ from Uni to Uni. Let me give you an example, in 2009 MSc Management at LBS was priced at 21K+, at Warwick it was 16K+ and at Lancaster it was 13K+. Fees are dependant on Uni ranking, Govt. funding, student demand and of course inflation. Course fees of every Uni is written on the websites of respective website so I guess you have no problem getting a definite figure for a Uni of ur choice.

In 2009-2010 the course fees for MSc Management at Warwick was 16,200 . I stayed at the Uni accommodation whose expenses was 6000 in a year. Living expenses at Warwick used to be around 500 per month. (currently 1 = 73 INR)

Ans 2: Difference between a FT MBA and a FT MSc Management (MIM) at Warwick -
1. MBA is expensive, MIM is 30% cheaper than an MBA.
2. MBA is for people with more than 7 yrs of (managerial) experience. MIM is for people with less than 2 years of experience.
3. MBA lays stress on case based study. MIM lays stress on lecture based study.
4. MBA focuses more on in-company project work. MIM focuses more dissertation.
5. MBA is for people who wants career shift (lateral opportunaties). MIM for people who are career starters (Graduate opportunities)

Above four are the differences. Both courses contains the same modules and same lecturers. Reputation is an intangible aspect which in perception and can not quantified hence can not be compared.

Cheers.

I have recently received a conditional offer letter from MIM WBS, however due to the changed visa regulations i am a bit skeptical about joining the course..
I wanted to ask you that if there are gud job prospects back home if by any case we will have to return to our home country...also...i recently read a very negative feedback about the teaching methodology please can you guide on it.
Looking forward to your reply
Thanks

Also are there any decent part time job options available

I am done with the course so I am unaware of the changes in the visa regulation. The changes, I believe are applicable to all the Universities in the UK and not Warwick alone so I don't see how does changes in the UKBA policies conflict with your interest in joining the Warwick MIM programme.

India is a goldmine for professionals belonging to every sectors, so good job prospects do exist in plenty! But those good prospects belong to people with good domain knowledge. So I guess you should ask yourself if you will be good enough to grab those opportunities after a year.

Please don't have unrealistic expectation from any MSc Management course taught at a University in the UK. Changes won't happen overnight. Along with the good grades, try to bag an internship. Not just any internship but an internship where the function of the role is in sync with your future ambition. For example, if you are interested in working in economics related role, you might consider an internship at Nera Consulting. When you come back to India you can easily get a research analyst at a bank/consultancy cz of ur internship.

I am neither accepting nor refuting any claim made by a person about poor teaching quality at Warwick since that person has aired his/her own views and I have nothing to complain about. Everyone has a right to air his/her opinion and hence I can't comment anything about it.

Part-time jobs are never ever decent anywhere in the world. UK Govt. has rules regarding foreign students working part-time. You will be paid fixed hourly wage which is uniform throughout the UK and you are not legally permitted to work beyond 20 hours except the vacation period. There are some part-time jobs available at Warwick, but being a campus based Uni, such jobs are limited. Working part-time is not that popular among students at Warwick, I don't know about the undergrads but amongst international postgrads I hardly knew anyone working part-time apart form one or two guys; even I also didn't work part-time anywhere.

Part time jobs within the campus are regulated by Unitemps & Warwick-SU and are less in number but you may find plenty of part-time jobs outside the campus at the Royal Lemington Spa, Kenilworth, Earlsdon and Coventry City Centre. All these areas are 15 mins from the campus by city-bus which which charges 1.5 (approx) per trip, if you take a monthly bus pass, you will save more than 25% of the travel fare. Popular places for part time work are NEXT, Primark, KFC, McD, Poundworld, Tesco, ASDA, Cineworld etc. etc. Some might hire foreign nationals where as some might not, depends on the hiring manager and company policies. You need to have a NI Number/Card issued by the HM Revenue & Customs before you can submit an application for a part-time job in the UK.

Thank you soo much ... your reply is really helpful.I am sorry to bother you much but According to you what would be more economical and safe on campus or off campus accomodation ...also were you able to get a decent profile just after graduation and is it easy to get internships.
I have also heard that there are loads of vacations during the course is it true...is it a very intensive course?
Thanks
Ankita

Also could you please share your profile and where are you working now

Economical = off-campus and Safe = on-campus.

Its not easy to get internships in UK. But then where is it easy to get internship? Its not even easy in the IITs! My brother studies at IIT-Bombay and had to work his a** off to get an internship. Even the MSc guys from Oxford, Cambridge guys sweat to get an internship. The situation is pretty much the same across the Atlantic in the USA where MS guys even at schools like Kelly struggle for internships.

All British Unis are like that. There is less stress on classroom work and more on group work. 2nd term of Warwick MIM was very stressful for me, there were lots and lots of presentation work & Assignments. But there will be no classes in the summer term except the first 2 weeks. All unis including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE etc follows this pattern and it does feel a bit strange to guys like us. First term will be very light with just 4 modules (three of them will be assessed). All modules will have just 1 lecture of 3hrs duration in a week so in a day you will have either a lecture of three hours or will be an off day. I have a friend at Aston Uni and his schedule sounds almost the same as mine so it can be safely said that all UK Unis follow the same pattern. There is absolutely no check on attendance, it doesn't matter whether you attend the lecture or not as long as you submit the assignments on time. Its very easy to feel that the course is not worth the money since quite frankly no PG course in UK are really worth the ridiculously inflated fees they charge and since the education system is generally research based hence you may feel the course is not exhaustive but all the Universities follow the identical pedagogical Pattern.

Also could you please share your profile and where are you working now

I'm sorry, I can't share such private information with anyone on internet.

Cheers

I have already stated the companies which offered jobs to Warwick FT MIM candidates through graduate recruitment. Typical salaries of graduate recruitment ranges from 18000 p.a. to 32000 p.a., but most of them are around 24000 p.a. in the UK. In India, it depends on the company, some of the MIM grads got package as high as INR 7.5lk p.a. but average is INR 4.5lk p.a. Many joined their family businesses in India.

As for salaries offered to Warwick FT MBA, I don't have much knowledge. I guess there is a separate thread on Pagalguy for Warwick MBA, please enquire there.

Hi,
This thread has been very informative
Most of my queries were answered and answered well, before i could put them down here :D
But i still have a few questions.
My qualifications are - B.tech from IP university (GGSIPU) with around 68%
I was looking for MiM, and surprisingly wbs doesnt require GMAT?!
I had some more colleges in mind like Imperial, LBS, Strathclyde & Manchester too

Could you tell me if i'm eleigible for any of these with 68% in b.tech?
And how would you rank these colleges?
I was also planning for a part time job also ( which according to this thread seems stupid ) :p
And yes, i'm willing to write GMAT too and i'll hopefully score above 600.

what would be your suggestions?

thanx in adv.

PS - how's royal holloway? Any job prospects due to it being in London?

Like Warwick, other schools like Imperial, Strathclyde & Manchester don't require GMAT for MIM/MM/MBM programs. LBS and LSE however requires GMAT.

You are eligible to apply but I can not tell whether you are eligible for admission since that depends on the admission committee of the respective schools.

And how would you rank these colleges?

Please refer my first post, I clearly told that I will not compare/rank schools.

what would be your suggestions?

Write a high quality SOP.

Royal Holloway is located at Surrey and not in London. Its 32 Kms from London.
