Hi
I am a medicine graduate. Have long nurtured a dream to be a Health Sector Entrepreneur, but can't find any good B-schools in India who can help me in achieving my dream. Seems like they just can't digest the thought that good doctors can be good entrepreneurs also. All they can do is advise me to get into Masters in Health Administration. Anyways, I've checked out the curriculum of lots of B-schools in US & Europe, and now I feel the problem of abundance. My GMAT score is 730 with AWA 6 and have cleared CAT twice with more than 98 %tile, but turned down admission offers twice from three top-rung B-schools in India. I have a 2 year work-ex in Health Insurance and am currently working since 6 months with a group as part of its market research and analysis and product development as Associate. I had enquired at 3 B-schools which have Health Sector MBA, and could list them out for you if you wish. I just can't decide which will be the best school for me. Is it that all schools famous for entrepreneurship (Babson included) are good enough? Or should I stick to the old criterion of going for the best available? Secondly, finances will definitely be an issue, so if I give you the names of 5-6 colleges which are ready to give me a scholarship, will you please please plzzzzzzzz help Jeremy? I am in such a soup I just can't find help. Can you please guide me to the best school? I can give you all further details you want me to, to help me out.
Thanks for the efforts

could you please tell me the differences in the following fields of study..
HR
HRM

sir
how to convert percentage into gpa ?
I've got 66% in bachelors degree (agriculture) and 76% in post graduate degree (agriculture) from Agra university(DR.Br.AMBEDKAR UNIVERSITY,AGRA),India.
are these percentages sufficient to get admitted into the top B-schools of USA ?
jeremy,
please give reply to my post.
Thank you for your inquiry.
You raise a very valid concern with the GMAT's longevity. It is true that the score itself is valid for five years, but schools tend to prefer a more current version. This is not to suggest that a 750 will suddenly become useless, but it will have more impact nearer to the date that you anticipate applying. Still, if you plan to matriculate in 3-4 years, you will be applying in 2-3, so it should not be that much of a hazard to take it now. If you have the time, I would go for it.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Hey hi..
I am presently a final year cse student .I have bagged a job offer from Microsoft India and will be joining them in Hyderabad next summers in 2008.
It's like, I am pretty much sure tat i would like to do an mba from either isb or from abroad , say 3-4 years from now.
As, I am in the final year and am not having much to study, so I thought of giving the gmat nowitself say in next 3-4 months after prep.
I know tat the gmat score is valid for 5 years, but i have also heard from some unreliable sources tat the value of the score depreciates after the initial 1-2 years.
1)Is it true?
2)Should I write the gmat now or wait for 2-3 years(keeping in mind tat i will be aiming only the top 15-20 bschools in US, some in singapore and ISB in india?
Can someone please please help me on dis issue. I would be highly grateful.
thanx in advance....
Thank you for your inquiry.
At MBA Mission, we preach the gospel of differentiation -- candidates who discover their unique attributes succeed. In your case, you have a variety of remarkably differentiable points. I have seen many candidates over the years, but your legal experience seems to be quite distinct -- you have academic, practical and faculty experience, all of which seems to point to you performing at very high levels. This, combined with a 710 GMAT, truly points to you being a very strong candidate.
I am confident that if you put the time and effort into your applications and you are able to get standout references that you will be able to find a home among a top-ten school.
If you would like to discuss your candidacy in depth, please feel free to fill out a free consultation form on our website.

Hello Jeremy,
Beforeall, congratulations for taking time out of your schedule and answering anxious candidates!
I'd request you to kindly assess my chances at top 20 schools in US and Europe considering that I'd be applying for classes starting in Fall 2009.
Sex: M ; Age: 25
Education: 5 year integrated law course from NUJS, consistently ranked as one of the top three law schools in the country (acceptance less than 3 percent). I concentrated on business and financial laws in my optionals. I am ranked in top 25 in a batch of 70 students. I'd attribute my average acad to the fact that I was always an active participant in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities (the toppers have practically nothing to show here; the programme was too rigorous as evidenced by the fact that 15 from our class dropped out).
Additionally, 7 of my project papers have been published (highest in my class) including one in FICCI's (india's apex commerce body) annual entertainment law journal.
was part of the research team of the School of Criminal Justice and Administration constituted for the drafting of The Economic Offences Code (A UNDP project supervised by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India) wherein my report on Shortcomings in Various Economic Legislations constituted a part of the final report.
I have always been an active member of the School of Economic and Business Laws and contributed actively to various events organized by it.
Extra-curricular: I excelled in moot courts which demands excellent oratory skills. I have further been an active member of our legal aid clinic providing legal assistance to the under-privileged in rural west bengal. i've always been passionate about animal rights which i hope to highlight. last, but not the least, i have consistently represented my school and then university in cricket and football tournaments.
GMAT: 710
Work: Have been working since April 2006 in India's biggest law firm (rated consistently by Euromoney as the best in india and one of the best independent lawfirms in the world) in their capital markets practice group. I'd consider my responsibilities at the law firm to be considerably more than what a typical associate at my level gets.
My responsibilities include:The experience I cherish most has been the evolution of a new practice area for the Firm, namely, anti-trust and international trade law group, in which I was intimately involved.
- Structuring various public and private capital markets transactions including IPOs, ADRs and GDRs, Follow-on offers, private equity deals, External Commercial Borrowings etc,
- Conducting due diligence, drafting offer documents, prospectus, diligence reports, etc
- Negotiating various commercial arrangements including investment agreements, underwriting agreements, syndicate agreements etc
However, I'd be leaving this job and joining a prestigious law school as its faculty member starting january. I believe I'll have more opportunities to demonstrate my leadership potential in my new role.
I've refrained from detailing every aspect of my education and my career in the post. However, I believe it has been an interesting and enjoyable one and an MBA, for me, marks a natural progression.
I would be grateful if you could provide me with your inputs.
Thanks and Regards
Thank you for your inquiry.
I must apologize. My knowledge of schools outside of North America and Europe is not great.
Sincerely,
Jeremy

Robin,
I enjoyed your post -- always nice to get a laugh while I am responding.
While you come from the deaded engineering/tech background, you seem to have excelled and thus accelerated. The fact that you can boast a whopping four promotions and that you are the youngest member of your team speaks volumes about you. Further, your 770 and your WHO film really add diversity to an already impressive story.
I think that the European schools should be in reach for you.

Hello Jeremy,
First of all let me thank you for providing this excellent platform where every aspirant can post his or her query.
Here is my profile.
My Background: 27 Indian | IT Male
* Ok Academics 76% in my 10th class, 72% in class 12th both from state boards. National merit scholarship holder for 10th exam. 65 % (First Class) in my undergrad engineering course. Got a rank of 8 in the engineering entrance exam in which around 40,000 candidates appeared.
* During the final year of my undergrad degree, I was recruited by Indian IT major company (TCS). Worked with TCS for 2 and a half years in capacity of Database Administrator. Earned one promotion during this time.
* Joined a giant US IT company as a Technical Analyst and have earned four promotions in as many years and now I work as a manager and manage a team of 32 analysts that is distributed across five continents. (North America,Europe,Africa, Asia, South America). I am the youngest member of the team that I manage.
* Was part of the team that set up Oracle ERP centers in Santiago,Cairo, Hyderabad and Noida.
* GMAT scores of 770 (2007) and 640 (2005). First attempt was a non-serious one as my weekends were getting a little too liquor-friendly for my liking and I wanted an alternative way to invest my time. Needless to say who won ?
Extra-Curricular:
* Directing short-films which primarily focus on the field of Health care. Won the first prize for a documentary in 2-minute international short film competition organized by WHO.
* Member of the college Rock band and toured and performed in 15 different states in India.
* Runner-up in Tennis at University level.
* Won 7 national level quiz competitions.
* Represented the college in various cricket tournaments.
Goal :
Entrepreneurship. I want to start my own company and for that I want to learn my theory. But can't afford to spend two years on learning the concepts. So, I am primarily targeting the European schools. Any chance of me making it to INSEAD/LBS/IMD ? Which of the aforementioned bullet points should I try to project as the face of my perceived persona (through the essays) for these three colleges.
Regards,
-Robin of Lancelot.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Business schools don't officially prefer one professional sector over the other, but, there are so many Indian technology candidates that a finance candidate can be a breath of fresh air for a tired admissions committee. Still, you should not be deceived -- your application as a whole is what is important. As long as you display excellence in everything you do -- professional, personal, academic, community, extra-curricular, etc. -- your profile will stand on its own.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Hi Jeremy,
I just finished my graduation in Engineering this may and I'm yet to land on a job. I took my GMAT last month and scored a decent 680 and AWA 5.5. I feel this is not bad for a first attempt, although I plan to retake and score 750+ next time. I want to make my career in the Wall Street/iBanking after my MBA. So, I was told that in order to make it into TOP US universities, one needs a great quality workex in a good sector. Is it true that universities have sectoral preferences when it comes to admitting students in their class? I do understand the fact that they look forward to make the class diverse. Is it true that IT experience isn't as valued as manufacturing/finance work experience? The main reason I am asking you this is because, at the moment, I've the freedom to decide between IT and finance (stock markets research side). Other details: Graduation-Engineering- 68% and extracir. activiities include essay writing, quizzes and other aptitude/olympiad tests.
Thank you for your inquiry.
I apologize, but I really can't be of any help when it comes to an ISB/NUS debate. My expertise truly lies within the North American and European schools. Nonetheless, I hope that you are content with your choice!
Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Hi Jeremy,
Within India, Indian School of Business has a very good reputation. Can you tell me how reputed is ISB internationally. If given a choice between National University of Singapore and Indian School of Business, which would be a better choice.
I weighted all the pros and cons that I could think of and I still am not able to think of any reason which would answer, "What does ISB have which NUS doesn't?" other than the reputation. But then again as I mentioned before I do not know if it is as reputed among non-Indians as well?
Can you help me out? Which one would be a better choice?
Thanks,
Abhishek.
Thank you for your inquiry.
While your profile was somewhat limited, I nonetheless think that you have applied to such a range of schools where the competition is reasonable that you should find multiple homes amid them. i would be quite surprised if this were not the case. I would look forward to you enlightening me with your results.

Jeremy Shinewald

Thank you for your inquiry.
I honestly cannot comment on schools that have strengths in HRM. With respect to entrepreneurship, many schools have specialities and strengths. Babson focuses their MBA on entrepreneurship. Columbia has a variety of impressive programs including an incubator. Etc. Most schools have a myriad of business plan competitions, mentorship opportunities. Etc. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, as so many schools have these resources. If I absolutely had to rank the schools, HBS, Stanford, Columbia, MIT and Babson would standout -- though many more deserve very honorable mentions.

To answer your second question, GMAT scores are good for five years. Schools tend to have a bias toward GMATs that are taken closer to an application date, but three years should not be too much of a problem. After all, you will be applying in two....

You seem to have solid scores and impressive extra-curriculars, but I don't see the type of standout professional experience that is typical of HBS and Stanford admits. I would recommend having a few more conservative choices, if you are determined to attend a US school.

While something tells me that this advice will be a bit late, my advice for both of these schools is simply to relax and be yourself. Both schools are known for very laidback interviews where candidates have a chance to be themselves and express their sincere interest in the school itself and then connect their values and experiences to the school. As long as you manage(d) your time well and are sincere, then you should be (or have been) fine...

Thank you for your inquiry.
I am not sure that I can advise you on the GMAT scores necessary for ISB. Nonetheless, i do think that your medical experience is quite distinct and will likely be welcomed in the classroom. i don't think that your experience will be counted as six months -- all of the practice involved in your education will no doubt result in some additional credit.

|docmba SaysHi I am Doctor from Kerala, I have a job experience of 6 months working as an Asst Surgeon in a Rural PHC, i have consistently scored more than 60% marks during my M.B.B.S. I also have scored 82% marks in my 10th std and 84% in my 12th std and was involved in a lot of extra curricular activities at school level, there wasnt much in college since there weren't much activities as such. I was the school captain and the best outgoing student in my school. i have participated in lots of community works during my M.B.B.S and my work as an Asst Surgeon including being involved in the work during two viral fever epidemics in kerala in 2006 and 2007.At present I'm preparing for GMAT. i would like to know what score in GMAT is required to secure an admission in ISB and whether my 6 months work experience is enough. Is it true that even though ISB prefers candidates with 2 years of experience , it will consider applicants with lesser work experince in exceptional cases.
Thanks for your inquiry.
Your work experience is phenomenal, but you will have to overcome a significant obstacle, due to the fact that you already have an MBA. Further, your GMAT might be an issue at INSEAD, but less so at Cambridge and Oxford, which are generally less competitive. Regardless, the first issue is key and you will have to write an optional essay that clearly outlines your reasons for needing a second MBA and how it will dramatically change your career -- quite a tall order.

Hi
I am new to this forum and to pagalguy for that matter ..........
have a few questions .........
How does one compare an Oxford or a Cambridge with say an INSEAD ......pros , cons etc ..
Hw much weightage is given to one's GMAT score , i know that most schools refer to the GMAT score as just one criterion but still ........
I am 26 / M / Non IT (for the first time in my life i think that this might be an advantage for me) ......
I already have a prior MBA from a top Indian school .......
Will have around 42 months of work ex by the time i start wid my MBA (36 months Intl Exp) ........
Work for a trading company that primarily deals with agricultural commodities .............
Have worked in more than 7 countries (mostly in Africa and South America) .....
Manage a work force of 85 employees and a business worth $50 Million......
Good Acads (not spectacular) - 10th standard - 80% , 12th standard - 87% , B.com (hons) (Delhi University) - 61% , MBA - 7.5 / 9 (GPA) ............
Good extra co ( I have been an avid quizzer , have learnt jazz dance fr over 3 yrs and done professional theatre for over 3 years) .....
Now , the weakest link in my profile , my GMAT score - 660
Hw much is the low score going to impact my chances ?? .....
I am not averse to taking the stupid exam again if need be........
Plz advise ????????????????? Should i go ahead wid the apps .........
I am looking at INSEAD , LBS , HBS (not necessarily in that order) .......
USP - I have handled teams of more than 80-90 employees and have been heading a product out of a country for the past 2 years , also my african experience is something that makes me different from others .......atleast that's what i assume .......
